Tips For Enjoying Hearthstone

Hey all, JAlexanderHS back again today to talk about how to better enjoy the game, as well as the most common threads that run through the discussions coming from those who aren’t enjoying their time.

It’s no secret that complaints around this forum and others are common. They are varied in their surface level content a lot, and everyone has somethings they enjoy and things they don’t. There are preferences and there’s nothing wrong with having them and voicing them. However, on a deeper level, there is a commonality among the majority of these complaints: they focus very heavily on times the opponent did something powerful.

People have their most fun playing the game when they win it. The largest obstacle to winning is, you guessed it, when the opponent does something good. Unsurprisingly, this appears to be what most complaints are about, even when they are framed differently. Even when people explicitly deny that’s what they’re complaining about. It’s not all complaints, but it certainly seems to be most of them. These complaints can be so pervasive people will even complain if they win the game, simply because it was hard after the opponent did something good.

Unfortunately, focusing on this aspect is often the way to have the least amount of fun playing the game. You cannot control what decks your opponents select. You cannot ask that your opponents only get to do things that are weak while you get to do what you want. You cannot ask that your opponent doesn’t try to win the game. You can’t ask that other people need to constrain their fun for your sake.

Focusing on what opponent does is not only out of your control, but is also doesn’t contribute to your own fun. Your own memory system won’t be a perfect representation of reality here either. You will focus on all the unfair and lucky stuff that the opponent did, largely without much mind paid to the fun things you get to do that won you the game and took away your opponent a fun. The more you actively focus on the opponents fun, the less you will focus on your own.

If you want to get your most fun out of the game, your better course of action is focusing on what fun things you want to do that you get to do. Find your joy in playing and choosing what you want, however you want to balance and trade off winning and playing things that appeal to you. These are the factors under your control. If you think about the fun things you want to do, and the powerful things you want to do, you can perhaps think with less anger about the things your opponent will be doing. After all, aren’t they doing the same things you are, figuring out what they want to do in the game?

To be clear, you absolutely can complain about anything and everything if you want. It just that this strategy won’t contribute well to you having the most fun when you play.

Introducing SquadOV: Battlegrounds, Constructed and Arena/Duels replays!

Introducing SQUADOV!

TLDR: SquadOV is a new way to record Hearthstone games. It saves your match history and syncs it with your VODs, making skipping to specific parts of the game simple and easy. Users can also enter ‘Squads’ to share their match history with friends.

Hey guys! My friend Mike and I have been working on a new app to change how we use replays. We wanted a way to make sifting through replays, capturing highlights and reviewing game VODs easier. Especially when it came to Battlegrounds, it was hard to review games and see where we ‘misplayed’ (in our case, we’d misplay more often than not). In our quest to get better, we wasted a lot of time going through OBS recordings and skipping to certain matches was tedious. Sharing our match history and tracking progression was also very difficult. We’d oftentimes just write in a notepad our last few placements and our starting ELO (super technical, we know). That’s why we came up with SquadOV: to solve all of these problems.

SquadOV’s goal is to help with all that by recording gameplay automatically, tracking your match history & progression, and syncs your VOD to your match history in the replay to make reviewing VODs simple and easy. It also has additional features such as syncing different teammates’ POVs in ‘Squads’. Users can also group up in ‘Squads’ to share their match history across different games.

Here are some sample pictures (I swear I was over 8000 pre reset)

And a sample video of SquadOV in action

Summary of Features:

No need for other screen capturing software such as OBS! Captures Hearthstone Constructed, Battlegrounds, Arenas, Duels and Tavern Brawl games automatically.
View your matches anywhere, anytime! Match History and VODs are stored online.
Saving match highlights from games has never been easier! Make a sick play? Match History and VODs are synced together. Users can easily jump to critical points in their VOD. Re-watch discover options and tavern offerings during battlegrounds or constructed.
Rating is recorded online after every game to make tracking progression easy! Keep track of your Competitive Rating for Constructed, Battlegrounds & Duels.
Squad mode allows you to share and browse other users’ games within the same Squad! If you are both in the same game, the same game is synchronized to allow switching from one point of view to another seamlessly!

Check us out now at [
SquadOV.gg](https://Squadov.gg)! Also let us know of any questions or feedback. We’d love to hear what you think and how we could make this as good as it can be.

Some Questions:

Difference between SquadOV and HSReplay / Firestone. Currently HSReplay and Firestone have robust post game stats but limited replay capability (battlegrounds and discover options for example). SquadOV keeps a clean VOD of the game play and syncs the match history to the VOD to allow you to go through replays much easier with defined events and timestamps. It also tracks personal rating for Battlegrounds + Constructed well.

"Oh my!"-Paladin awareness thread

Has this ever happened to you? You play ladder, and get matched against a Paladin. He wishes you a happy winterveil, calls you a champion and... doesn't really play any minions aside from tiny card draw minions. He also keeps buffing your minions and not attacking you at all.

Then, on turn 6, he does something weird. He plays Loremaster Cho, followed my "Oh my yogg!" and "Hammer of wrath". He greets you again and ends his turn!

Is your first reaction to panic and go face with your full board? What if I told you, there is another way? You might even get one of the hardest achievements in the game if you suppress your urge to either trigger the secret with 15 health remaining or to just never trigger it at all?

That Paladin is likely trying to get the achievement, that requires you to get lethal with "oh my yogg". And it counts for both players, the one that played it, as well as the one who triggered it! You still get the win, anyway! Isn't that great?

Okay, but seriously, this feels so much like one of the Co-Op brawls, where you always get matched with some Potato, who hasn't understood the objective of the game. I thought that if I could show my opponent that I have played oh my yogg and even given them the tools to go for the yogg-lethal, they would understand. I was wrong. Not a single one so far has grasped the concept.

Please, PLEASE, spread some awareness, so this nightmare can end. You have 0 agency about this achievement, it's just frustrating.

There's a difference between 'adjacent minions' and 'neighbors' when it comes to locations, and it's terrible

Cards like Flametongue Totem, Dire Wolf Alpha and Candleraiser don't buff a minion when there's a location between the Totem/Wolf/Candleraiser and the to be buffed '(non) adjacent' minion

Proof (for Candleraiser) in a match I started just to test it: https://replays.firestoneapp.com/?reviewId=63c13f9e-a5ef-4ebd-bdb3-9264300f89b7&turn=10&action=2

A 'The Lurker Below' just killed a minion 'through my location', but it says 'deal 3 damage to an enemy minion. If it dies, repeat on one of it's neighbors'.

Replay: https://replays.firestoneapp.com/?reviewId=986cd0a0-d4ee-4e07-bacf-b2d6eb7d5c2d&turn=13&action=3

Why is there a difference between those things?

Then there's also cards like Shooting Star and Hollow Hellhound that speak of 'next to it' to make it even more vague
