Hard time finding helpdesk techs

Hi everyone. In my district, we lost two helpdesk techs back in February, and we’re losing an additional two at the end of the year. Two are going to other jobs with more pay, one is going into law enforcement, and the forth is retiring. My boss recently hired a new person, who then quit the Friday before their first day, and then hired another who also quit before their first day.

Considering two schools have been out of a tech for three months now, and an additional three schools losing their techs, I’m curious why we can’t find and retain IT staff. I get that public education doesn’t pay that much compared to the private sector, but my district has had several helpdesk techs stay over a decade. Just frustrating that we can’t find anyone.

Logoff on lid close fail. Any method for a non-kiosk Chromebook scheduled restart?

We have an issue this year with students that have physically altered their devices to disable lid detection since we had logoff on lid close configured. Doing this causes issues for some extensions and also allows them to keep tabs that they had opened in the evening when we have less restrictive filtering in place. I know scheduled reboot only works for kiosks, so I was wondering if anyone found any extension to force a scheduled restart of if if anyone has figured out a clever way to utilize chrome://restart to address this.

Digital Signage Options

Hello everyone. I have been looking into all sorts of different options for digital signage. Our current license is done at the end of June. We pay a few thousand for it and I would like to find something that is cheaper than that.

My question for you is what is your current digital signage. Anyone have any recommendations?

Point of Sales for ball games

I work at a small rural district, so I often get to manage things that are only nominally technological. As an example this week I had the privilege of replacing the stereo on a bus. Anyway, one of my duties is running the livestream during ball games. Last year they requested I put up a TV in the basketball concession stand to show the livestream so people wouldn't miss the game while standing in line. I also noticed they were wasting a lot of time with people looking at the printed list of prices taped to a shelf so I put up another TV to show a yodeck menu and could mark out menu items they had run out of pretty easily. This was met with positive reviews and improved the efficiency of the stand by not having to explain what they were out of 100 times. I was also able to do away with printed programs by posting QR codes that would take people to the rosters.

This year I'd like to take it a step further. It's already summer break here so I'm beginning to make plans. Our current setup is basically a cash box with a calculator and a price list. Junior high kids are often working the concession stand during high school games and they generally have trouble charging the correct amount and counting back correct change. I'd like to get a POS that they punch in the order with and can take cash or card which I feel might eliminate some loss.

I would like it if fans can order from the stands on their phones with a notification to come pickup when the order is ready. I don't think we have enough workers to have it delivered in the stands, though. Extra bonus if we can sell concession gift cards for a fundraiser.

I have a meeting scheduled with Blitz Concessions to see what they have to offer, but I would also like to be able to take cards for gate. Has anyone here setup anything like this or have any other recommendations? I am hoping to find a one stop shop that can do both gate and concessions and be able to take cards on-site. Thanks in advance.

Teaching faculty about COPPA?

Do you guys put the onus on your teachers to figure out is a website they want to use is COPPA compliant or not? If you do, how have you gone about educating your faculty on it/checking company compliance?

If you don't put the onus on teachers, what is the process for teachers who want to use something? Do they just go ahead until you see they are using something and either sigh with relief that it is compliant or tell them they have to stop? Do they come to you every time they want to find a website/program/app for anything and you have to do all the research for something that fits with the way they want to teach too?

Dell Optiplex 7090 UFF discontinued

Just an FYI for those that might be using these, Dell has discontinued the line and there is no UFF replacement. Really annoyed at this, as I've been using them now at two districts for office staff. They really liked having the increased desk space, and these devices were easy to upgrade if needed. The suggested replacement is a 7010 SFF paired with a MFS22 AIO stand. We're back to the days of towers mounted on the back of monitor stands...

What is your favorite 10 or 12 port PoE Managed Switch?

I have a few areas of my building where I have limited CAT6 runs back to the MDF / IDF. For those situations, I was using some D-Link DGS-1210-10MP switches as they are managed switch with PoE. I've recently been running into a problem with 2 of these switches so I thought it might be time to look at something new. What are some of your small managed switches you like that can also do PoE?

Synology NAS Google Workspace backup

In the process of setting up a Synology NAS to backup our Google Workspace - is there any way to limit access of files viewed in the backup?

For example: Our school has an "Admin" folder that only the higher ups can view, IT cannot.

How can we set up the NAS to ensure that IT doesn't have access and can't view those folders in the backup

BYOD Windows/Mac. Block Google Play?

We're moving 1:1 in the future, but right now the school uses BYOD and it's mostly windows or some Macbooks. Many, MANY kids have the BlueStacks emulator on their machines and use it access phone apps and communicate, bypassing my filters. Being those apps communicate with Google Play, and we have no chromebooks in the building, does that sound like a legit options to prevent the bypass?

Favorite Cleaning Supplies?

This may be a weird one, but I was wondering what everyone's favorite cleaning supplies are. We are about to do Chromebook intake and I need to slide one more supplies order in before the end of the budget year. Just looking for the products people like the most.

I am fairly new to the k12 space (\~6 months) so any cool cleaning tips you've come across are also appreciated. Like if anyone knows how to reliably get off the silver gum wrapper residue, that would be swell. I haven't dealt with this personally as of yet but my techs have warned me about it.

Cheers

Staff laptops

Hi. This was the first year our teachers were issued laptops. Do they normally turn them in for the summer? I was thinking we'd collect them to run updates, then let them have them back in July if needed for prep/planning.

Also, should I install GCPW on those as well?

Thanks.

Network physical move and Active Directory split

We currently have one Active Directory domain that serves 2 organizations in one building. My organization is leaving the building. My servers are all on a Hyper-V stack and the other organization is on a VMWare stack, so separating the physical servers isn't much of an issue. We plan to split the AD domain in half and then each keep running our own independent instances of the original domain.

We currently have 3 Active Directory controllers. AD3 is on my Hyper-V stack so the plan is that I'll just unplug that stack, set it up at the new location, and delete AD1 and AD2 from my instance of the domain. Then I'll create a new AD4 server and promote it to be a DC. I think all that seems like it will work, but let me know if you see issues.

I'm also concerned about the DNS and DHCP roles that the DCs have. I believe all three DCs run DNS. How will my AD3 respond to not seeing the other two DNS servers?

DHCP might be interesting. AD1 and AD3 are currently setup in a load-balanced configuration. How will each DHCP server respond to not seeing its load-balanced partner?

Anything else I'm missing?

Papercut environmental impact stats

Curious to compare our stats to others. We are a smaller school with 1050 students and 250 staff.

Since August we have consumed 106.2 trees and have 91.7 hours running a supermarket.

We have no idea what that really means so I thought it would be fun to compare stats with others.

Blocking Youtube access for students

Just curious as we continually have issues with Youtube, it's content, and even Google's own ineptitude on blocking some material. Our filter catches some of it but not all for sure. We are a K8 school and it seems it was set up during the pandemic before I arrived here. We're having internal discussions about blocking access for students.

Just curious how many of you are blocking it?

Multiple domains, multiple google workspace accounts, GCDS, Intune & other services?

Is someone in this community managing two or more AD domains on the same Windows server?

I need to manage two school which are hosted in the same campus, I thought this is the most rational way to proceed.

* Two virtualised DC, with DNS & DHCP failover
* One forest, two domains
* Users will share some devices, for instance staffroom computers and printers (will require domain prefix input at login screen)

Wondering what issues I might face when using Google Cloud Directory Sync and Intune. For instance,

1. can GCDS be configured to manage two Google Workspace accounts and two domains running on the same server?
2. Same as for Intune
3. Can a unique set of GPOs be applied to multiple domains at the same time?

What issues may I expect?

How are you guys managing teachers using home printers that need the printers software installed?

Im new in a ICT manager role where previously teachers have been give domain Admin accounts, (So they could reset student passwords). I have obviously changed this however one of the sticking points to teachers no long being admin is that they cannot install their printer software at home on their own. I dont want to give the teachers local admin on their devices either however i am getting wind of a petition going round about the changes. Has anyone else dealt with anything similar or have any ideas.

Switching to Chromebooks for teaching staff

I'm always impressed that all our solutions for technology in school districts can be so diverse, yet we all manage to make them work well. Currently, we are an *mostly* Apple/Google small rural K12 district. We have a 1:1 Chromebook for all students K through 12.

Our teachers have MacBook Air 13" and they are also issued the same Chromebook as students for teacher and/or substitute use only.

My question is, have any of you switched from say Windows or Mac laptops to Chromebooks and if so, do you have any recommendation on models? I'd like to get some thing more powerful than the Lenovo 300e we use for students. Not sure what everyone feels is robust or "fast" in the Chromebook world. Looking for suggestions.

Happy end of the school year to all! Wishing everyone a summer of successful projects.

Dell Latitude 3120 (Windows)

Anyone else have these model of laptops? We’ve been having such big issues with them not powering on anymore or not consistently. A hard reset sometimes fixes them, but most of the time they just stop powering again. Some end up just resetting bios settings on their own like the cmos isn’t working as well. I can’t consistently recreate the issues which makes it tough to see what’s causing it.

We’ve tried new parts, bios (1.16.0) and driver updates and still no luck. I’d say about 25-30% have encountered this issue.

Anyone run into this or have a solution?

Students accessing discord and bypassing filters using script

Hey all, I'm currently a little stumped on this one. If students type in this entire "URL" on their Chromebook it allows them to get to discord:

data:text/html,<script>window.location.href='https://discord.com/app?%27+%27e%27.repeat(16380)&lt;/script&gt;

So I'm not sure how to block this. Our tools would be Google Workspace, GoGuardian, or Cisco Umbrella.

Setting SSH connection with MDM

Using Mosyle to scp a file to client with a script.

Going to set up ssh connection and the script fails with Host key verification failed.

If i add the host manually with ssh-copy-id it works.

ssh-copy-id -i \~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub user@host.com

I've tried sudo, without the .pub and a few other ways.

Should I be able to set this up with a script or is it not meant to be possible this way? I'm just trialing the software so I don't want to setup a public file host.

Jamf users - What's your deployment process?

If you are a Jamf Pro user, what's your process for mass deploying MacBooks? I'm looking for specific workflows for a new machine, and a used machine going to a new user. We do a lot of things the old-school way. The sys-admin that was here before I started does a reimage of every single device. During this process, we install updates, install our desired applications (including Jamf Self-service) PSKs, Jamf Connect, set up the dock, establish security settings, etc. This is a huge time suck but I don't know if there is a better way.

Using Chromevox in kiosk apps (specifically Bluebook)

I'm in the process of getting Bluebook deployed on Chromebooks for some SAT testing in June and we have one student that will need to use the screen-reading accessibility features to take the test. In Bluebook when you click on the accessibility section it seems that they want you to use Chromevox for this and give the hotkeys to enable it but trying to enable it doesn't seem to work. Even if I enable Chromevox on the Chromebook before booting into the kiosk mode Bluebook app, the Chromevox toggle doesn't seem to stay on once you load up Bluebook.

Has anyone successfully used Chromevox with Bluebook on Chromebooks? If so, could you let me know what it was that got it to work? I'm going to try to contact Collegeboard support about it, but my experience with them has been some of the worst I've ever had with any support department so I'm not too confident in the outcome.

What's your eSports setup like? What do I have to consider?

We are rolling it out over the summer but I'm curious about some of the pitfalls. We need an "arena" area for the competition but the PCs will be lab computers that can be used during the day. I'm assuming some kind of streaming/monitor setup as well.

What's yours look like? What would you do if you could start all over? Assume budget isn't an issue.
