Block users from logging into district Google account on unmanaged browsers/devices
Hello-
Is there a way to block users from logging into their Google accounts on non managed machines i.e at the public library etc... We are worried about them leaving themselves logged into a public device.

National Summit in K-12 School Safety and Security Video Feed Issues
Is anyone else watching this running into issues with the Teams feed just dying out with a spinning load indicator? I’ve had it happen at least a dozen times today, even in the videos shown before the event started.
I’ve been able to leave and join back in to have it temporarily work, but it just died out and wouldn’t load or play anything for a few minutes, even after leaving and rejoining.

Apple Classroom doesn't work for BYOD enrolled devices
At our school, we are trying to roll out full Apple Classroom functionality for user enrolled BYOD ipadOS devices with both personal and school AppleIDs.
We use Mosyle as our MDM solution.
We set up our class rosters in ASM.
However, the BYOD users appear offline in their class in the Classroom app. We also tried using Mosyle Manager to "Prepare the Classroom App" with classes where users use BYOD, but that did not make any difference.
Where can I find relevant documentation on Apple Classroom Support for BYOD devices?
Where should I start debugging the issue?
Anyone who can share experience with Apple Classroom and BYOD ipadOS devices?

Am I crazy?
I dunno man. I think I have about worn out my understanding of what a sysadmin does in a k12 environment. We got a new super who is super into getting me out from behind my desk and shaking hands and showing my smile in as many corners of the district as possible and I get it to a degree. In IT we are prickly and inaccessible but not only do I have to be the jack of all trades, configuring Windows servers, Linux servers, bashing Cisco CLI commands in into switches, staying up to date on the latest security concerns, now I have to be an ambassador for school tech too?
I haven't done a technical thing for two weeks now... just listening to concerns and nodding sympathetically as people complain about slow internet while my whole other job of being and admin is piling up. Should I just lean on service providers and consultants more? Just be a project manager/hands off Sysadmin? Is anybody else running into this? Have I just been sheltered and naïve?

Powerwashing Chromebooks and protecting wifi passwords
We have recently changed wifi passwords and procedures and do not have an open "guest" wifi any more. Students are able to Powerwash a chromebook with esc/refresh but can't rejoin wifi to enroll it back. They can at home, but students are doing it to themselves or each other during school.
It's easy to see who the trouble makers are by the teachers, but technically there is no way to prevent this or require a password to accept the powerwash before it happens?

Presentation topics for teachers and/or admin?
I've been asked to present at a yearly conference for teachers (and some admin) in our state. Looking back on past conference listings, it looks like only one other tech has presented and she was more of an instructional tech rather than an admin. Her sessions focused on pear deck and similar Ed tech tools.
I've asked a few teachers in my org what they'd like to learn and they said anything but new apps.
I'm usually good at coming up with ideas but I'm just drawing a blank on this one. Does anyone care to share any recent presentations you did for teachers and/or admin?

Google Drive File Stream issues
Got a weird one - Drive File Stream only works on domain networks. As soon as you're on a public or private network, it won't load. I assume the issue is something either Windows Defender, but creating rules doesn't seem to solve the problem. Anybody experience this before?

Google Drive Storage Limit Enforcement
We have reached a consensus on setting up storage limits for our users in Google Workspace Fundamentals due to Google's storage limits. While we know where we want to end up, I am curious how other districts are set up and enforcing this.
Can anyone who has storage limits in place share how you go about enforcing the limits?
We plan to set our limits as follows:
>Staff
20GB
>Students
elem 2GB
MS 5GB
HS 10GB
For example, we want to start deleting Student accounts that have been suspended for 1+ years. This will recover quite a bit of storage.
Is anyone doing this? And how are you doing it? (automated? frequency?)

Seeking Solutions: Tracking User Internet Activity
Hi you all, I hope you are doing good.
We're in need of your expertise! Our organization currently relies on the SonicWall Analyzer tool to track user internet activity. However, we've encountered some challenges with its performance and effectiveness. We're looking for alternative solutions that can provide us with more comprehensive and detailed insights into user online behavior.
Do you have any recommendations for software, systems, or methodologies that excel in monitoring user internet activity? Our goal is to gain better visibility into websites visited, applications used, and bandwidth consumption at an individual level.
We would greatly appreciate any insights, suggestions, or alternative solutions you can share with us. Thank you for your help!
Best regards.

Need an online solution for Student ID cards
I work at a PK3-12 school district of 2000+ students. We are adding student ID cards starting this upcoming school year.
We purchased three Evolis Primacy card printers... the software that came with them was disappointing. I instead crated the cards in Adobe InDesign and merged the data into my created template. The export is to a PDF file, so I created a separate file for each grade level. That way if they need to reprint a lost card they can just open the file for that grade and find which page that student is and print just that one page. Not the best solution, but it is the first year and it is a bit rushed... it will work.
Here is my question. Is anyone using an online solution that they like? I am looking for a service that I can upload all of the student pics and will print for a template that I create (first, last, year, grade, campus, id with barcode, and student picture). I would like to be able to give access to about six other staff members so they can reprint lost cards or even enter new students and print directly from the site.
Can anyone recommend a system like this?

Navigating/Manipulating headless Linux Server Filesystem with GUI from a Mac?
Hey guys. We've got a handful of Linux servers in our district running our on-prem JAMF instance. I've been able to do ok with navigating these machines over CLI and SSH, but it sure would be nice when copying files around to be able to use the GUI on my mac.
Our management doesn't want the Ubuntu Desktop environment installed, but is there a good way to maybe be able to navigate and manipulate the files on that server in a GUI like fashion without installing it on the actual server? I know you can run GUI apps with something like Xquartz, but can you use something similar Finder on an Ubuntu server remotely without installing the desktop environment?

Anyone else receiving emails not addressed to you?
From Gmail, messages to/from other departments are ending up in my inbox. Can you tell from the email whether you've been BCC'd? They don't have any content that IT would need to know about, and they aren't being caught by any of our filters (we have an objectionable word filter that forwards unsavoury conversations to IT and administration.)

Google Password Sync
I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but is anyone having issues with Google Password Sync? Periodically, we get users that change their password on AD and it doesn't sync over to Google. If I go into Google as an administrator and set a password and force a password change, it of course works then. We have hundreds of password changes per day and I only get to hear about this sporadically from the helpdesk.
We did have an issue several weeks ago when we installed SentinelOne on our domain controllers and S1 was blocking password_sync_dll.dll from attaching to lsass.exe. We've since removed S1 from all servers since our trial was done and I've also removed and reinstalled GPS on all DCs, it's the latest version and according to the DC event logs, the password change was synced.
When I run the support tool from https://github.com/google/password-sync-support-tool, everything comes back clean. I even run a Powershell script that runs "tasklist /m password_sync_dll.dll" against all DCs every 5 minutes, because I'm paranoid that it's not running for some reason.
We opened a ticket with Amplified IT and waiting to hear back from them.

Rules Regarding AD Account Retention
Does anyone know (or can point me in the direction) of documentation regarding retention of AD accounts? I know we have to retain academic records for 5 years after withdrawal, but I'm not sure if 1. that falls in that category and 2. if there's something else that may dictate that number. I'm a bit of a clean freak and i'm really tired of seeing such a big number in my disabled users OU. We're a public k12 in Texas for a bit of info.
Thanks in advance!

ICX6450-24P and 48P Switch PoE issues
I have a mix of 24 and 48 port Brocade ICX6450 switches in current deployment. I am attempting to set the power limit on each port to 15400, however the Aruba 505APs I have keep resetting the power limit to 30000 which then goes over the available amount the switches can provide. Could anyone tell me how to get the power limit to stick? The APs don't need 30000 available to them and I need this set up to work for at least a year until funding comes back around.
How can I get the power limit to stay set at 15400 instead of being renegotiated?

Having a weird issue, I have a teacher who on her personal account Adobe Preview & Print works fine, but on her teacher account for our google workspace it does not. The error it is throwing out isn't even specific either "There was an error with this action try again later"
Nothing is blocked in our workspace from what I can tell, and we have Adobe force installed for teachers, been trying to google around for this but so far haven't been able to find a clear answer yet.

Best location for a network switch?
We are converting/upgrading a classroom into a computer classroom. This is my only K12 job, and I work alone, so I have no local advice. I've never installed a new switch in a new location, so I want to measure twice and cut once.
Relevant details:
1. There are 3 rows with 8 seats each for a total of 24 workstations.
2. The tables are already wired with 2x duplex receptacles underneath near each desk hole.
3. I have to run ethernet: cat6 I assume would be SOP here.
4. I have to install a switch: probably a 48-port since a 24 would be maxed from the get go, and I've never seen a 36 port switch.
Any other suggestions are welcome too. I need all the help I can get!
Photo of the room is here: https://imgur.com/a/coLwBk9
r/networking is great, but I specifically asked here because this is a basic question, and, even more so, kids will be kids and I want this setup to survive more than a week!
Should I be concerned about putting the switch down at desk level between the front row and the black chair?

How do your schools handle diplomas?
Working in a new school district and the High School handles printing their own diplomas. They have a template made in Corel, and have a printer they use and every year so far that I've been here, it's kind of a nightmare come graduation time... In my previous district diploma printing was never a crisis that came up, and it dawns on me that I never knew what the high school there did. I assumed it was a service from say Jostens or something. A High School printing out their own diplomas seems a little strange to me, but is that the norm?

Safeshare.tv & GoGuardian
Not really news to anyone, but our kiddos have been leveraging their school email addresses to create safeshare.tv accounts to access GG restricted content from youtube.
we've noticed that when a user is logged into safeshare the URL is https://safeshare.tv/my/ and when the video is actually hosted and shared it's https://safeshare.tv/x/
the idea being, in GG can we block safeshare.tv/my on the students OU, so that the students cannot create their own safeshare videos, but whitelist https://safeshare.tv/x/ so that they can view teacher videos shared in google classroom?
can someone tell me why that's a dumb idea or why it wouldn't work? ty!

Papercut mixed MFC environment, basic, with stapling, B&W & Colour. What can we expect from Find-Me printing?
Hello in our small school, before transitioning our MFC fleet into Papercut we would like to know exactly what we can expect if all printers are migrated to papercut.
Basically we have some machines which support stapling and punching, while others don't. Color or black and white.
* 3 MFCs with color printing & stapling
* 1 MFC with B&W & stapling
* 3 MFCs B&W without stapling
We will be using Windows laptops for staff and Chromebooks for students.
How will find-me printing work in a mixed environment as the above? I guess we won't be entitled to use a unique printing queue since printers have mixed features.... What can we expect and how should we configure queues?
Can MFCs be configured in multiple queues?

Abandoned Network Cabling
Does anyone actually rip out abandoned cabling from their infrastructure? I inherited our school district's and in all of our buildings it pretty much stays in until the day the building is knocked over. Our oldest schools still have thicknet, analog phone wiring, and coax running all throughout them. At the very most, if rooms are renovated, the cables are usually just ripped out of the walls and shoved into the ceilings or they're simply chopped off at the IDF/MDF.
I really dislike clutter so it's something that bothers me in almost all of our closets, but obviously I recognize the cost to rip it out can be quite high. I'm just wondering if there are any justifications beyond simply keeping things neat.
