Good intro book for Chinese history?
Hello all, was wondering if anyone has any good recommendations on a book that will give me an intro in Chinese history, something covering of course the 20th Century as well as much earlier. I never really had any proper education about East Asian history and think knowing about China would be a good place to start. If there is something of good quality but still a page turner, I'd love to know about it. Something like Bill Bryson's style would be great!
Thanks for any help you may have. I have just joined reddit so hope this is about right!

How could there be casteism if no one's died😤❌
>No of people killed in a year in India due to caste violence:20
No of people killed in a year in US due to inter- racial violence:225
Conclusion:India is casteist state.😑😑

What do you people think about reservation benefits going to Hill native Savarnas?
For example in Uttarakhand, we have 70 legislative assembly seats and few of them are reserved for SC, many of the major parties' candidates there are Rajputs there cause many Rajputs in my state benefit from SC reservation. I myself have a Tripathi classmate who is an SC too. Some Rajputs I know in person are OBCs in central list. Rawats(Rajputs) of Bhotia tribes and Jaunsari Brahmins have ST status too. I guess some Gorkhas who are Kshatriya too get benefits.
I have seen many people from other marginalized castes who see this as increased competition for resources meant for them and an abuse to the system. Recently centre awarded ST status to communities in Jammu which will include some Brahmins from there, so this question comes again and again. What do you people think about this issue?

Jains are more annoying than uc hindus
Hindus have few casteist bamans. But this entire community is based on casteism and ill practices.
They don't touch anyone who isn't a Jain. Have superiority complex for no reason. And interfaith marriages are considered a sin. Renting their homes, they even leave bamans behind in this aspect. Remember that case of a baniya guy who was denied to rent house in gujarat? Yeah that entire locality was of Jains. Casteism is solid in their daily routine.

The kashmir question
Ik there's lots of history and conflicts in the past few decades in the valley. I've a little more than surface level understanding of the conflict, so please lemme know if I'm wrong anywhere. I believe in the right to self determination of any people, be it Kashmir or Palestine.
I believe historical wrong doings are used as an excuse to oppress the people of the iok and there's legit grievances there. Is it possible to pull out other big state actors' troops and have an autonomous, democratic and secular kashmir with reparations for ousted kashmiri pandits with a right to return? This will insure India has no marketable "moral" reason to invade this autonomous state in the future. And have a standing kashmiri army to fight any destabilizing entities.
I think china would be a state actor that might actually help in this situation for a strategic alliance. They'll get to flex their muscle and have another emerging market which they are very keen on having. There's a possibility of them having their own imperialistic ambitions in the valley and their Islamophobic actions in the past do not help their case to be a benevolent neighbour either. But I see the Chinese prosperity, chinese investments and infra building in Africa and it seems hopeful.
Improvement of material conditions and life quality will be a boon to the Kashmiri community and help with nation building. China's big investments being in the valley will also grant protection from any future meddling from India as it can be seen as an aggressive action which can be met by retaliation from a much bigger and sophisticated army. Ik China is no saint but is there a possibility to make a deal with the devil here for the good of the people? It might not be the most ideal one but atleast better than the present situation imo
Is this an impossible and stupid take?

My heart is heavy today
My heart is heavy today. Dr.Singh, a person I look up to, a man whose silence spoke more than most speeches, who always responded with grace, reacted with facts, stuck to the point, held press conferences, always put himself in a position to be answerable to people, is no more.
He was the best student that India ever had. He was the most educated and accomplished leader that the world ever had. He was a politician that is not meant to be. India survived 1991 because Dr.Singh was born an Indian.
Way back in 2010, Our Hindi magazine was set for launch. Dr. Singh had committed to launch it. On the day of the launch, he was fighting a desperate battle on the women’s reservation bill in the parliament. His office called me to say that the then HRD minister, Mr.Kapil Sibal would launch it. I said NO. It was either Dr. Singh or none. Our English magazine was launched by Dr. Kalam. Both, living examples of how they believed in education, pursued it despite the most difficult circumstances and beat every odd to become the most powerful people in India. All because of EDUCATION. That is what CAREERS360 stands for and I wasn’t willing to attribute that DNA to any other politician.
Hearing my argument, he took out time in the middle of a parliamentary session and launched Careers360.
There hasn’t been and will ever be a more knowledgeable and dignified and a humble man to sit on that throne than Dr. Singh.
Good bye sir. You are moving to a better world. Hopefully, a world that would judge you well and be kinder to you.

The attitude towards interracial relationships in this country is frightening
“Bro saved 6000”
“Pink”
“Ab toh raat ko roz aawaz aegi”
These are some of the comments on an interracial couple’s(Indian man, white woman) instagram. The absolute filth that’s the Indian manosphere is just abhorrent. I checked some of these commenters and it’s wild that they don’t even hide behind a fake profile anymore. It’s all out there. And most of them seem “educated” enough to know better but clearly not.
The urge to appear “dank” and cheap internet has ruined a generation of people.truly rotten. Go to some desi subreddits and you’ll see it there as well.
I’m in an interracial relationship myself and every time I bring my partner to India, I invariably find someone creeping on her. I have to be on guard 24*7 to make sure she’s safe. I can see it in their eyes what they’re thinking and it’s just scary af.

Many people vote for BJP to keep "certain kinds" out of power
Early this month I had a conversation with a Yadav girl, she told me her family voted for Yogi ji in 2022 only because they fear Muslims, they do not want Muslims in power. I also know a people who voted for BJP in Haryana only to keep Jats out of power. I can also think of why a lot of dalits shifted from BSP to BJP, may be because they don't want Yadavs in power through SP as both of these communities have had issues with one another in past and vast majority of the violence against dalits are done by intermediatory castes in UP.
My political theory is that BJP provides sense of security to a lot of people. I myself live in Haldwani which had a riot in Feb, this year. Most Punjabis and Kumaonis in Haldwani vote for BJP or INC, but the increased support towards BJP is very visible now. People seems to fear for themselves, their shops or anything for that matter, whatever stake they have in the system. They may say that BJP does not fulfill promises and failed on many fronts but atleast I am secure from "X" as long as I vote for BJP.

Why desi men of different religious beliefs do moral policing for each other?
I deleted the post I made earlier around the same topic because I thought it wasn’t well written. In deleted post, I referred to a meme depicting hypocrisy of Hindu men getting offended by a woman they deem as dressed inappropriately for worship in contrast to applauding a pandit despite him carrying out religious rituals shirtless. The reaction to that post in the sub where I originally saw it was highly negative, and men of other religious backgrounds came to defend the sexist double standards of hindu men. I also cited how a Sikh guy I worked with was bragging about telling Muslim women to observe hijab and follow their religion in right and proper manner. It’s not only restricted to misogyny. These men hold hatred for homosexuals and transgenders, too.
Now, the question, or better call it the problem is why misogyny, homophobia and other forms of bigotry ends up uniting these men who are otherwise willing enough to slit each other’s throats?
It’s amusing to notice how Muslims, and other non-Hindu men are allowed to slut-shame Hindu women when Hindu men believe that they have committed a transgression against local/traditional customs of religious or non-religious nature.
There’s a broad agreement between the majority of south asians on how to structure a society, and what kind of behaviour is acceptable. Our cultural traditions are highly patriarchal. One such is high preference for male children. We have good number of people or families who actually mourn the birth of girls and transsexuals. The cultural traditions promote subjugation of certain groups. It doesn’t really matter what god they pray to.
It doesn’t make any sense for a Hindu to tell a Muslim that he’s missing his prayer, and shall quickly head to the mosque to offer it. It doesn’t make any sense for a Muslim to reprimand a christian for missing Sunday prayer at church. These people aren’t subscribed to the same moral or theological frameworks. They all can’t be right, but they all can be wrong.
The gulf we witness between muslims and Hindus is less of social and more of theological nature. If islam is puritanical, then so is Hinduism.

So called alpha hindu and muslim men...
Recently saw so called alpha hindu man reel on instagram.
That reel was typical. It showed in 2 parts, first one being the things they hate most, ambedkar was first one, muslims next, 3rd was feminism, 4th one was just gay couple being happy getting married (in hindu style). I get it, you hate the first 3 of course they provoke you and make fun of you. But what is the problem with 2 people just loving together and getting married? Like you still would have a problem if they had done court marriage if they didn't go with hindu customs.
2nd part was all about lynching, something about old ass statues of their so called great kings who lost to mughals and british (but they still deny it lmao). This isn't just upper caste hindus, lower castes behave the same way.
Also we shouldn't also spare muslims with their take on homosexuality and transsexuals btw. Even in some comments sections these so called alpha men of both religions come together to bully and make fun of LGBTQ individuals.
I am straight guy. I don't have, heck I don't even care about other people's love/sex life. Why do these so called alpha men who must be control their emotions are spying into others love life and getting triggered?
