I was looking through a whole bunch of photographs of (mostly political) murals, street art and graffiti that have been scrawled, painted, etched or sprayed across random and unsuspecting public spaces in Bengal in the last decade. Thought I'd share some of them with y'all!

How to join socialist organisations?
Getting organised is the only way to further our cause. Reading socialist theory is cool and all, but real change can only happen by joining a local socialist organisation, and organising the masses, by community service and standing up for working class concerns.
So how to do that in major cities, like Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai?

Harry Potter's popularity amongst the savarnas
I was never a huge fan of the books or the movies growing up but I got into it because everyone else was. And I revisited them again now and the underlying messaging is the fucking worst. I'm only gonna talk about broad strokes and the themes and not an in-depth analysis.
There's this arbitrary house system (kinda like caste) and one house is EVIL. Segregation of living and eating spaces. Only allowed to mingle in classes or during quidditch. There's so much subtext about ingroup and outgroup throughout the texts. First it's the houses, then it's the muggles, pure bloods and half bloods. Then there's the house elves who are slaves and Hermione getting ridiculed because she wants to help them out of slavery! Explanation is "the slaves want to be slaves"! Wtf!
The stratification of the society is justified while voldemort's actions are seen as bad for upholding the same faschie structures! Like why, it doesn't even make sense in universe. If anything it would make him more popular than anything else. But jk Rowling (may she rest in piss) has tried making voldemort cartoonishly evil so that you don't question the rest of the hierarchical systems as bad. And in the end the characters uphold the said hierarchy anyway.
No other young adult franchises have gotten this popular amongst Indians (Percy Jackson, hunger games were popular but not even 1/10th of cult following of HP). It doesn't help that these books are also insanely popular and more people are bound to find them and indulge in them.
These books have been extremely popular amongst Indians for more than a decade and I feel like these hierarchical systems and their preservation is one of the reasons it's so popular amongst Indians (esp savarnas). Maybe these hierachies give them a sense of familiarity.
I'm not saying this is the only reason why people like them (the world building is pretty cool, I used to like it too) but this could be one of the reasons why people love it so much. This applies to global HP fandom, not just savarnas but there's no critical reading of these texts and any criticism is seen as redundant or "ruining the escapist fantasy" and it just doesn't sit right tbh.
Everything is politics, if someone thinks otherwise it probably means they're not the ones affected by the said politics

Uttam was allegedly upset with the birth of his third daughter and constantly taunted his wife about it, leading to frequent quarrels in the house. As soon as she caught fire, Maina started screaming for help. Locals tried to extinguish the fire, but Maina, by then had suffered severe burns. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but died even before doctors could begin treatment. “On Thursday night, after an argument, Uttam poured petrol on her and set her ablaze. Partition of Bengal and migration of Bengali fron Bangladesh to India
So, I've one classmate and similar to what happens to every other college friendship after a certain point, that one fine day you find out they're 'neutral', same thing happened to me. So he'd say some bizzare things like why do I take side with Palestinians and post about marginalisation of muslims whereas I don't say anything about Bangladeshi hindus (which isn't true). The thing is since I live here I'll obviously talk about the marginalisation of minorities here that doesn't mean I support the same thing in other country. But but his argument to this is bizzare, he says since my grandparents have a history of coming to India during partition, I should be grateful to people who were original resident of Bengal!!! This feels like a cruel attack Can you argue to this?! I mean you can but there's no way it's gonna be fruitful. I have tried to make him understand that how traumatic partition experience can be! And he's like I don't understand why! His argument is when he doesn't understand something he calls it overreacting. I have stopped talking to him but he still sends me post of Bangladeshi Hindu's house getting demolished or smth of that sort!
I feel he personally hates me. How do you deal with such things?

A huge problem with people is that they think companies and profits are everything. | My encounter with a capitalist.
https://ibb.co/RbX2pHd
While discussing things in the context of India and its government enterprises, people tend to forget that not everything that government runs is to make profit and become a Fortune 500 company. While discussing with a Redditor, I realised that the way of thinking of a lot of people in this country starts with the profits and gains a company is making. They ignore a very important point in the process, the people.
They forget that it is the people who should be at the centre and not some company. Profits and everything is fine, but not at the expense of the exploitation of the common people. In the context of BSNL, the fellow's point is to privatise it so it can do better in the market. Which is a valid point from the perspective of a person who want the company to earn profits, but is BSNL only there to earn profits for the government. This is the point the buddy capitalists forget while discussing government undertakings and entities.
Please share your point of view.

Incessant trolling of Nirmala Sitharaman
I have come across incessant trolling (and rightly so) of Nirmala Sitharaman. But in the end Nirmala is just a yes woman for the Modi. I do not think Nirmala has even an iota of input in making economic policies in India. She has a degree in economics and that's it. From 2014 Modi has sidelined all the potential economist like Yeshwant Sinha and even Subramanium Swamy for being outspoken. His first appointee was a lawyer, ie Arun Jaitley. So when all this is done under Modi regiment, why all the trolling is towards Nirmala.
Modi is going exactly according to Indira Gandhi playbook and one of the outcome in near future would be weak and fragmented BJP (that is good thing). He has some how attained elevated status in the psyche of normal middle class (if you can call them so) Indians (especially in Hindi speaking region) like Indira when the famous slogan amongst congress lackey was "Indira is India". Some how my feed has all this finance and stock pages recommendation on reddit and all of it filled with memes of Nirmala but none on Modi.
But what is it that is making Modi immune of such trolling. Is it micromanagement of his image in the public? Is it control over the media?

Why do every failure of republic is blamed upon oppressed castes people?
Recently China showed a prototype for 6th generation fighter jets and as someone preparing for AFCAT learning about this was a shit experience. What the hell is government doing? We ain't even at 4th generation native tech. However social media all over the place put blame on reservation in DRDO etc, few of my friends too some of whom benefit from reservation think that Army is a holy institution, it is too sacred to be touched with bad spirits of social justice, DRDO should have been left out of this debate of social justice and if that had happened we had got ahead now just like we are in space(ISRO has next to no reservation).
Add to this, for most RW people reservation debates are a waste of time, a backward thinking, a distraction from real issue like manufacturing. This sentiment is common among almost all of India's defence, engineering, CS, IT, Manufacturing spaces. Any online discussion forum where any economic thing is discussed generally is hostile to anti-caste activists.
Some people who I personally admire for their personal achievements truly wants to insulate sciences and Army from social justice movement and blame "undeserving" people of the failures we have.
