Day in the life of a savarna feminist 🎀

6:00 : I woke up and remembered that my maid wouldn’t be able to come today ( even though I generously gave her my old clothes and a substantial raise). I am pretty sure she is dancing at her sister’s wedding 🙄

6:30 : I was about to crack open some chicken period but then I realised that today is Tuesday so I asked my loving husband to blinkit some paneer

8:20: I hopped into my car that I BOUGHT WITH MY OWN MONEY. I didn’t need hand outs to get here 😇

9:00: My female coworker was side eyeing me after I called her a kaali kalouti yesterday. Her friends aren’t speaking to me either. She accused me of being lazy and stealing credit so I called her that 😪 why’s there a double standard? All insults are made equal. No ifs or buts

10:30: I spilt a bit of chai on my brown zara loafers. Oof it’s going to make me look sooo unclassy yaar.

12:00: my husband posted a sweet ghibli image of our intercaste wedding. He’s Gujjar and I’m Rajput ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ Despite being in a very progressive arrangement, we are connected to our roots and culture ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

14:00: my boss gave me a promotion ✨✨✨✨ I can now go abroad for vacayy

17:00: a hijda was aggressively knocking on my car window for money. Why can’t these people just get a job 😒

18:00 : My husband surprised me with a get together of our college friends. One of our friends is the funniest person you’ll ever meet!! He isn’t afraid of offending the woke mob. He always wanted to be a comedian but is afraid of being cancelled due to “ Islamophobia”. I don’t discriminate against Muslims but why are we not allowed to make fun of them ☹️

21:00: we go online looking for a dog to buy. I was thinking about a big husky or any dog that normally lives near the North Pole.

22:30: I got lazy goodnight 😴

Who Judges the Judge? 5 judges who constantly fail Indian Women

TL;DR: Institutional misogyny in our courts isn't accidental; it’s a documented pattern where 'family sanctity' is used as a legal code for 'female submission.'

Disclaimer: All quotes in this post are sourced from official court transcripts or public statements. No judges were harmed in the making of this post, though the same cannot be said for the spirit of the Indian Constitution..

\--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been seeing of lot judicial transcripts in the news and needless to say my faith in the justice system has eroded (maybe it'll recover by a sliver the day I see swift judgement for crimes against women). You expect to see the court as a transformative institution, but for many on the bench, the 'Ideal Indian woman' archetype and the 'sanctity of the family (OVER your autonomy)' still supersede constitutional rights. (De-humanizing, much? Hello we're humans too, your honor!).

To understand the scale of the problem, I ended up researching on the judges with the most regressive stances (Note - they're not the only ones, just the ones with the MOST number go regressive comments, maybe they're fighting for an award? who knows!):

1. Justice Markandey Katju and the constant devaluation of professional women - Katju’s brand of misogyny ranges from casual sexism to the normalization of rape culture. He has publicly suggested that female lawyers secure orders by WINKING at judges, effectively stripping them of their professional merit. Cherry on cake? He frames rape as a NATURAL URGE or a sociological byproduct of unemployment - shifting blame from perpetrators to 'biological requirements.' So basically, since folks are unemployed, we should just...accept rape?
2. Justice Krishna Sripad Dixit, the 'ideal victim' gatekeeper - His only believes survivors who fit a narrow, archaic profile. He famously questioned a survivor's credibility because she fell asleep after an assault, stating it was UNBECOMING of an Indian woman.' Beyond this, he has told survivors that 'women suffer in ALL marriages' and argued that only married lawyers should argue family cases - prioritizing the 'promotion of marriage' over legal redress for abuse. (I have deep sympathies for his wife).
3. Justice C. Hari Shankar, the architect of 'marital impunity' - In his 450-page ruling on marital rape, he intellectualized the ERASURE of female consent within the home (Yes, read that AGAIN). He argues that marriage carries an 'inexorable expectation of sexual relations,' which creates a 'presumption of consent.' He effectively created an asserts that the OUTRAGE felt by a wife raped by her husband is UNJUSTIFIED compared to a stranger rape. Therefore, he legally justified domestic sexual violence to preserve marital sanctity. (Well ladies, those of us who haven't been raped will all be called hysterical because rapists are divided by degrees - husbands, strangers, convicts. There's always worse rape out there!)
4. Former CJI S.A. Bobde and his views on matrimonial agency - His remarks signal that marriage is a shield for, and a solution to - (wait for it.......) criminal violence. He asked a man accused of raping a MINOR, 'Will you marry her?' as a SOLUTION to the case. By questioning if sex between a lawfully wedded man and his wife could be called rape - even if the man is BRUTAL, he reinforces the idea that marriage is a zone where the law simply does not apply to women's bodies.
5. Justice Rahul Chaturvedi and his erasure of power dynamics - His rulings often rely on myths to discredit educated or professional women. In the Chinmayanand case, he found it MIND BOGGLING that a victim didn't leave her abuser immediately, ignoring the psychological reality of power imbalances. He characterized sexual exploitation in academic settings as a QUID PRO QUO rather than rape, suggesting that 'intellectually proficient' women are somehow less susceptible to victimization or that their consent is more easily inferred. I wanted to post this on the very day it happened to me, but I couldn’t. Nevertheless, it has been weighing heavily on my heart, and I feel the need to vent.

I’m from Kashmir, and I’m a “low” caste Muslim. My caste is Sheikh, and the name itself is often used as a slur by “upper” caste people here. Sewer cleaners are commonly called “Sheikhs”, and another slur used for people from my caste is “watals”.

You might find it odd that I’m mentioning all this, but it’s important for giving context to the incident I’m about to talk about.

I recently passed my Class 9 examinations and started attending Class 10 tuition. In Kashmir, the new academic session begins before winter.

So, everything was going normally regular classes and nothing unusual. In my class, there’s a girl I’ve been in love with for a long time. I had approached her earlier, but she didn’t clearly accept or reject me, partly because she’s very shy and also because of religious restrictions. Still, we stayed in touch, our bond gradually grew stronger, and now we’re almost kind of in a relationship.

She attends the same tuition centre as I do. About a month ago, it was snowing heavily in Kashmir. I went to the tuition centre as usual. The classes had started, but she hadn’t arrived yet, she was late. Around twenty minutes into the first class, she came in. I was sitting on the middle bench, on the window side. She greeted me and asked if I could let her sit by the window because she likes watching the snow. I agreed.

As the class went on, she would occasionally ask me to look outside the window because the snowfall had become heavier. I did so whenever she asked. We were sitting very close to each other, and because it was cold, she told me to come a bit closer. Once again, she asked me to look outside. I leaned towards her to take a look, and at that exact moment, I heard the teacher screaming at the top of his lungs:

“Ho watla cxe kath chukh emis pethe khacxan, door rooz aemis nish mekeré watlé.”

It translates to: “O' “watul” (which is a slur for low caste people here), why are you sitting so close to her, get away from her you filthy “watul”.

It hit me like a spear. I couldn’t process what had just happened, that he had called me a caste slur in front of the entire class, for absolutely nothing. And mind you, he knows my caste, because he’s the one who marks our attendance, as his class is the first of the day.

I triedy best to cope with this by thinking that maybe it was because I’m not that good looking, I’m just an average looking guy, and she’s very beautiful. Maybe that’s why he said it. But then I remembered that ever since the day I joined the tuition centre, he has been casually using caste slurs during class. And the tone he used to say what he said. That made me rethink the entire situation, and it broke my heart.

I don’t know if I’m overreacting, but I couldn’t handle it, especially in her presence. I wanted to punch him in the face. But what difference would that make? Calling “low” castes by slurs is common in Kashmir, and it’s almost always overlooked.

Farming and Free Market: What happened when US liberalised its agriculture sector?

While the India-US trade agreement framework, which has imposed 18% tariff on Indian goods in exchange for 0% tariff on US goods and imposed several conditions of the US on Indian economic policy, is devastating for Indian economy; it has found huge enthusiasm among the temporarily embarrassed capitalists in India.

Many, with little understanding of agriculture policy, are suddenly championing the free market trade in a lopsided deal. While, the India-US trade deal is not free market at all, the ignorance about the liberalisation of agriculture is something that needs to be discussed separately.

Liberalisation of agriculture in US and EU, with “reforms” like free market and contract farming, worsened the conditions of farmers. Most of the small farmers were driven out by large corporations. And yet, the farming became more and more unprofitable, leading to massive subsidies by the governments every year. In the US, the federal government spends tens of billions of US dollar on farm payments every year. Today, farm subsidies in the US and the EU is several times higher than in India.

'If open markets were so benevolent, farmers in US or Europe would not be in severe crisis

US | Direct Government farm payments are forecast at $44.3 billion for 2026, a $13.8-billion increase from 2025

Why farm subsidies in India are far lower than in rich countries - The Hindu BusinessLine

Now, supporters of capitalism believe that this farm liberalisation which failed in the developed nations will magically work in India, where 87% of the farmers are small and marginal farmers. This can be said to be nothing more than an unscientific belief in a dogma.

you're educated and are being blackmailed, you deserved it!)

Ultimately, we must thank these 'milords' for their tireless efforts to transform our courtrooms into time machines; why bother with messy 21st-century concepts like 'female agency' or 'constitutional rights' when you can simply sermonize from the 1800s? According to this refined jurisprudence, a woman’s primary duty is to stay awake during her own assault to prove it was 'unbecoming,' or better yet, to view marital brutality as a 'legitimate expectation' included in her marriage subscription. By rebranding rape as a 'natural urge' and professional merit as a well-timed 'wink,' the bench has successfully ensured that the 'sanctity of the family' remains perfectly intact - right on top of our autonomy. If the goal was to make women feel like uninvited guests in their own legal system, then mission accomplished; after all, it’s much easier to rule by the law of the FATHER than the law of the LAND.
