LPT: When teaching a child something around the house, focus more on the fact that they are in the process of learning and less on the end result.

It will lessen your frustration and the chance you’ll convey discouraging vibes to them. It will also create a more positive experience for them and create better results in the long term.

LPT Thanksgiving Edition - Don't put potato peels in the garbage disposal

And if you own a building or have tenants, tell them the same. When you put potato peels into the garbage disposal, they basically end up forming into a sticky pasty mass that can get stuck in pipes or ruin the garbage disposal itself.

LPT: Over the holiday season don't overwhelm yourself for perfection - if others offer help take it.

Nobody remembers that year the potatoes were cut perfectly or the table was immaculately set. They remember the time spent together and the laughter. If the people at your celebration are vaguely capable and offer help accept it and relax a little.

So maybe your knife and fork might not match and the stuffing is made how cousin Helen makes it not the way you usually do but you got to sit and hang out with cousin Helen telling you stories about Grandma you never heard before. And instead of doing everything by yourself you get to relax and spend time with the people you love.

Let the kids set the table and let that odd friend of your brother do the washing up. Give everyone in the kitchen a knife and a board and prep the veggies together. Will things go a bit differently to the plan in your head? Of course it will. But it never goes according to the plan in your head. Embrace a little friendly chaos and actually enjoy the process.

LPT- I just got my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow morning and am my stitches seems like hitting my tongue, and I am absolutely terrified about dry socket

So I got my four wisdom teeth removed yesterday at 3:00 pm. At the end of surgery, my doctor stitched out my lower jaw of wisdom teeth. My doctors me prescription of medicine, gauze, and required me to eat soft foods or drinks for at least a week for to expedite a recovery. When I woke up today at morning (18 hrs after my surgery), I started feeling like the stitches is coming out. Since I did my wisdom teeth surgery, at peak of sick season, I have coughed up mucus two to three times in past 24 hours. Technically, spitting a single goes against the protocol (that includes coughing up mucus), I needed to coughed up few times just to clear my throat. I figured out stitches seems like coming out because stitches have been hitting my tongue. Not gonna deny that, I touched my wound section few times, but only to check that stitch is still on place and not coming out.

In short, I feel little to no pain on upper wisdom teeth, but I still feel pain in lower wisdom teeth and afraid of stitch being come out. I was thinking about asking my family to take me to local medical center (again! due to driving restriction for few days because of surgery), but the issue is my family (particularly my parents) works overtime at office which makes it difficult for me to get hold of them to buy me extra items recommended by doctor (ice pack to prevent swelling) and/or to take me to the local county medical center to check if stitch is on place.

My parents definitely have time for Thanksgiving Week (Nov 23, Nov 24) to take me to hospital to check my stitches. This way I can have one of the surgeon to adjust my stitches. I am also planning on going to my personal surgeon. If I am thinking about pursuing this plan, I most likely have to miss the work for Black Friday (Nov 24), since the surgery pain may extend for few more days. Given the situations, I am afraid that I will miss my retail work for Black Friday, Nov 25, and Nov 26. To decrease my chance of termination, I might even want to swap shifts with my trusted friends for Nov 25 and 26 since I already ran out of sick days. However, I can't swap shifts for Black Friday since everybody is scheduled. My doctor told me I can able to return to work 3 days after surgery as long as I deal with any post-surgery complications, depends on how I take care of my teeth and well as my diet.

My question is : Would I be facing dry socket complications given the situation? Would I be recovered within 60 hours, where I am scheduled to go to work for Black Friday given I am not dealing with pain in upper jaw, and only dealing pain with lower jaw because of stitches?
[Note : It looks like I have to take a day off from retail on Black Friday. Missing a retail or fast food jobs Black Friday grounds to termination in general. However, firing is not directly done my store manager, HR, and even departmental manager/ supervisor and rather processed by area manager and corporate of the company. So that case, firing is very unpredictable. For that reason, I am planning to consult my oral surgeon (for a note), Departmental of Labor, and Social Worker to make sure I don't get terminated because of taking days off due to medical emergency. HR in general in my store is cool with employee to take days off if they deal with medical emergency like that.\]

LPT: How To Accept a Compliment Like A Gentleman

After reading a long thread about different types of gender in language (he/she, him/her, it, etc.--masculine, feminine and neutral) that sort of drifted off into social interactions between the sexes, I thought "Why not research appropriate compliments between the sexes?" and eventually wound up at a website that explained how to wear a tuxedo (I'm male) and then, "How to Properly Tie A Bow Tie." I have only worn a tuxedo once in my life. It was rented for the occasion of my daughter's ballet school dance recital when she was seventeen. The dance number required Men to essentially be "props" for the senior girls to perform around. Tuxedos were de rigueur to complete the formal look, and all us fathers, older brothers, uncles and mother's boyfriends rented them at the same formal wear shop. They came with a permenantly tied bow tie with hooks in the back (thank God) and I recall thinking at the time, "I've never tied a real bow tie in my entire life." Okay. Dance over, returned the tux, and never gave bow ties another thought until fifteen minutes ago.

Why don't I know how to tie a bow tie? I mean tuxedos aren't the only attire for which bow ties are appropriate. Clip-on bow ties are for squirmy boys, not men. (Not that I've worn ties at all, once I discharged from the Marines, except at funerals, maybe.)

So I watched this video, and now I sort of want to own a bow tie. Why, I have no idea. Sort of like stockpiling canned goods and kerosene lanterns and extra shotgun shells. You just never know.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EKXNmM1PUo

This guy in the video is really something. He is the sort of guy one would expect to be working as a clerk at an upscale men's clothing store. He kind of creeps me out, but I think his advice is spot on.

LPT: A small tool bag of handy tools is a great housewarming or move-out gift

With Black Friday sales going on at home centers, its a good opportunity to put together a small toolkit that makes a great housewarming gift for anyone you know who is going to be buying a home for the first time, or even for students moving out into dorms or apartments for the first time. You can pick up a small ~10" tool bag for $10 or less and fill it with useful items, making sure that they'll have access to some common tools that are handy in any living situation and that they'll have somewhere to keep those tools without losing them all! I've done this for a few friends over the years, putting together a tool bag for $30-$50, and they've always been really well received. I even keep one in our upstairs closet, so I can take care of minor issues without having to head downstairs and get stuff out of the garage.

Some great picks for cheap items to throw in the tool bag include:

- Measuring tape
- Box cutter (don't forget the extra blades!)
- Level
- Small flashlight(s), headlamp, or a magnetic work light
- A basic screwdriver set
- Nice hex key sets
- Stud finder
- A drill bit set, if you know they've got a drill (or know that they'll be buying one soon, as homeowners)

All of these are items that are useful to apartment dwellers or homeowners, and during Black Friday, you can usually pick a lot of these up quite cheaply. Keep in mind that the point isn't about giving them the tools to renovate a home or repair a car, but to help them hang a picture, put together IKEA furniture, or figure out if that free couch down the street is going to fit in the living room. It's about giving them a start, and its also about giving them somewhere to start putting the inevitable accumulation of odds-and-ends tools that we acquire, instead of shoving them in a junk drawer.

LPT- email your family/create google doc with a list of meds you take. Doctors will need if in the event of an emergency.

My mother has congestive heart failure and is on the waiting list for a heart transplant. She is quite ill. While riding as a passenger in someone else’s vehicle, they were T-boned by a drunk driver. Long story short, ambulance took her to nearest ER, they called me and when I got there they told me they were sending her in a helicopter to larger university hospital, but wanted me to go in and say goodbye to her because she may well not make it. The doctors (who were wonderful) were frantically asking me info about her medical condition and what meds she takes. I felt so helpless, just picturing in my head the 15-20 pill bottles at her house on the dresser.

My mom made it and is slowly recovering. Now I have a list of everything she takes, her doctors names, etc.

LPT: if you live in a state that doesn’t pay for a two year degree, get a job at Walmart. They’ll pay for it!

I had no idea this was a perk of the job until I worked here, so I wanted to leave this here in case it’s not common knowledge.

There are a good amount of people I work with that are in school or have gotten degrees paid for by Walmart. Part time and full time employees.

Never considered going to school because it didn’t seem worth it to go into crippling debt for a piece of paper that most likely wouldn’t do much, if anything at all, to help me land a good job nowadays. (In America, anyway).

Now getting a degree feels like more like an opportunity instead of an obligation if I want a heightened chance of avoiding poverty.

LPT: Co-signing for someone is always a bad idea but if you really need to do it, make sure you are on the title

If you are on the title you have authority over the property and can take action if the other person stops paying. If you are not on the title and they stop paying, you have no recourse as it’s your responsibility to make the payment and it will spoil your credit. On the other hand, the original borrower may not even care about their credit

If they don’t want you to be on the title, then they don’t deserve to be co-signed

LPT: Learn how to take and prepare for tests, it's an incredibly helpful life skill in so many ways people probably don't realize

By "learn how to take tests", I mean learning to really read into a question and figure out what exactly it is asking, what information the question asker is trying to get from you, why they want it, and how it will influence their perspective of you.

I strongly belive that being able to accurately infer this information, and using this information to shape your answers, to influence the question askers oppinion of you, will allow you to talk your way into a better position then you might have any right to be in.

This applies to your classic style of tests, tests of apptitude like school tests, driving tests, etc. If you know what exact information the test giver is trying to get out of you, your in a much better position to give it to them for a higher score. And if you can get into the shoes of the test writer or giver and figure out what information they want and what their goals are, you can predict the questions they are likely to ask, and work out and reherse those questions ahead of time. So when those questions show up, you can belt out perfect answers in no time flat, and be in a solid position to answer questions you didn't predict if you can work your answer around the goals of the person asking the question and what they want to get from you.

And this all also applies to more "soft" tests, like a job interviews, applications, even social settings like dates or first impressions in the workplace, and networking. especially in situations that involve you getting compared against others, who likely don't have this skill. All the same stuff applies, put yourself in their place, what are their goals, what info will they want from you, what do you want them to think of you, how do you present the information that they want, in a way that will achive your goals in regards to how you want these people to perceive you, prepare by predicting questions and rehearsing answers.

I have used this skill everywhere, from job applications, to tests, to university and scholarship applications, to haggling for bank loan rates. It's incredible how far being able to do this well will carry you. Yet I have never been particularly smart, neither academically or socially.

LPT: Use a metal pan when roasting your turkey this thursday

My annual reminder for anyone who might be cooking thanksgiving on their own for the first time. If you're roasting the turkey, roast it in a metal roasting pan. Don't make the same mistake I made 10+ years ago and accidentally shatter glass over your exposed dinner and dessert when you go to pour the liquid into the pan to make the gravy.

pyrex dishes aren't made of the same materials anymore and don't react well to rapid temperature changes like a metal pan can. Don't get stuck with just turkey and cranberry sauce like I did that year (Turkey had been wrapped in foil and put aside beforehand) and have all of your hard work go to waste.

LPT: pushing the volume button (up or down) while your phone is ringing immediately silences the ringer

Nothing is more irritating than a person pulling their blaring phone out of their pocket, staring at it to deduce who is calling and whether to answer it or ignore it - all while allowing their phone to continue ringing. If it's in a sound-sensitive location (eg movie theater, business meeting, waiting room, etc) multiply that irritation by 100.

The good news is that you can digest who is calling you and decide how to triage the call accordingly without the added pressure of your ringer annoying people.

All you need to do is immediately tap the volume button (in either direction) and the ringer will silence. The call will still be pending and you can still choose to answer or ignore it. This works for basically all smart phones including Samsung and Apple.

Bonus LPT: set your phone to vibrate, there is pretty much no need for a ringer ever.

LPT: Too down to get through the university. Need help!

Hi, I am a university grad student(28F) and it has really made my life hell. I am not able to cope with it. I might be depressed and stuff, but these are a few things I am going through

- Foggy brain
- low self esteem and low confidence
- difficulty in understanding what I read and watch
- social anxiety
- get mediocre results even after giving my best
- my best is not upto my satisfaction
- shame and guilt
- overthinking
- self criticism
- when triggered by criticism, I go into negative spiral
- feeling stuck
- lots of crying everyday
- comparing myself with others
- getting bare minimum grades
- low mood all the time
- stage fright/ afraid of spotlight
- feel tired and lazy all day
- not getting time to think about nutrition or exercising
- usually have difficulty breathing
- I panic and freak out all the time
- scared of having to learn or do something new
- unable to push myself out of my comfort zone
- usually have the feeling to stop existing

Despite all these, my rational brain is somewhere there inside me and help me to realize what is happening with me. I want to help myself. I have tried medications a few years ago, they work but as soon as I stop them, symptoms relapse. I am not sure if I want to be dependent on medication my whole life. Also, occasionally I take talk therapy, it helps me temporarily but I am not sure if it's really working.

Can anyone suggest me with some nootropics or supplements or anything that would help me grow out of this state and help me achieve my actual potential. I'll be forever grateful. 🙏

LPT: Potentially life-saving: You can perform an auto-Heimlich maneuver

An auto-Heimlich maneuver means doing a Heimlich maneuver to yourself. (Auto in Latin means "self.")
To know wether or not you need to use the maneuver consider if you can make a sound, or cough. If you can speak you won't need the maneuver. If you are coughing you don't need the maneuver. This is because coughing requires airflow through your mouth.
If you aren't coughing and making noise, except for a gasp, then you may need to perform an auto-Heimlich.
Here are the steps for performing the maneuver:
Look around the room. Find an object with a side that you could press down on. This could include a counter, a couch, a table, anything like that.
Go up to the chosen object. It must be at least up to your belly in height.
Put your arms on the side in a position as if getting out of a pool or you are worn out.
This part will hurt but it doesn't matter, if you have to do this the alternative is death. Press down as hard as you can on the edge. Make sure the part of you that is hitting against the edge is in between your belly button and chest.
After this, whatever you were choking on should be ejected out.
I'm a parent and spent a bit of time working in the medical field. I have done the Heimlich maneuver many times, and know that it can save lives, and does every day. I want my kids and patients and everyone else to be able to do it themselves, if help doesn't arrive in time. Very few people know about the auto-Heimlich maneuver, and there are likely some who would be with today if they did.
I hope none of the people seeing this post need to use it, but that if they do they can. Good luck everyone!
