LPT: Consider a reversible octopus plushy
I was having a hell of a stressful time lately. At my local equivalent of a dollar store I saw those reversible octopus plushies. I bought a regular sized one, and a small keychain one.
The plan was to flip them accordingly to my mood so at least people know when I might get snappy and when I'm more "safe" to approach.
What happened instead was every time I picked up the octopus to set its mood, I decided on the happy face, and set my mood to match because the whole point is to match the octopus.
Somehow seeing I had a choice just made it easier to choose being calm, friendly, etc instead of sad, angry etc. I haven't been a beotch in weeks.
You shouldn't deny your uncomfortable feelings of course, and it's always best if you can see a professional if you have more serious/long-lasting problems with mood, but if you're just finding yourself more negative than you should be, it might be worth a shot.

LPT: Had a bit too much to drink, went to bed, and now the room is spinning? Put your foot on the ground next to the bed to make the spinning stop.
I heard this tip from a friend years ago. If you’re in bed after a night of drinking and the room is spinning, kick your leg out and put your foot flat against the floor. It’ll make the room stop spinning so you can concentrate getting to sleep. I’ve used this a handful of times over the years and it’s always helped.
Also, drink water. Lots of it. You’ll thank me in the morning.

LPT: Keep your own records of what dental procedures you've had and when they were completed.
Dental insurance often requires some frequency be met for a procedure to be eligible for coverage. If you change dentists and/or dental insurance then you may be the only one who knows this information. If you can't provide it then it can cause delays for payment and frustration for your dental provider.

LPT: Use baking soda & hot water to get rid of the funk smell on a Nalgene/water bottle
I had bought a new Nalgene bottle to keep at work recently, and even though I was only using water in the bottle, it developed a bad smell that persisted through washings and soakings.
I didn't have any vinegar (which also supposedly works) and tried using 3-4tbs of baking soda and hot water. I left the cap on and would shake the water occasionally. A few hours later, voila, my bottle is as neutral smelling as ever!

LPT: check the prices of your recurring subscriptions before they ship
prices fluctuate. if you have a recurring subscription always check the price before it ships to make sure you're getting the current best price available. these big corporations won't tell you the item is cheaper most of the time and keep billing you at the price you originally purchased it for. just experienced this with the petco app buying cat litter every 3 months. the original price over a year ago 23.49 for 26 lbs. the price is now 15.22 and petco was still gonna send me the items at the old price. terrible practice.

LPT: If you use SMS Two Factor Authentication, you should lock your SIM card with a PIN so that an attacker can't simply swap your SIM card into another phone to start receiving texts with your number.
Your phone passcode doesn't secure the SIM card itself.
First off, whenever possible, you should use Time-based One-time Password (TOTP) 2FA (for most people, this basically means using an authentication app on their phone, such as Google Authenticator). Unfortunately, many services still only offer 2FA via SMS, such as many banks.
Gaining access to your unsecure SIM card could allow an attacker to receive 2FA codes and complete password recovery on your accounts by simply swapping your SIM card into a phone that they have full control over.

LPT: Smell the strawberries!
Just found out not everybody knows this. When you’re thinking of buying strawberries at the store, give them a sniff. If they don’t have a strong and pleasant strawberry scent to them, they’re not worth buying. You can also smell if they’re overripe this way.
This is extremely reliable, and you’d be surprised how frequently you’ll find amazing strawberries even off season. And how often grocery store strawberries can be flavorless even during strawberry season

LPT: When copying text on a PC, use Ctrl+Shift+V to paste without formatting.
This helps immensely if you've ever had the formatting messed up when copying something into an email or into or out of documents. Also nice when paste without formatting isn't a right-click option.
Not to be confused with normal Ctrl + V paste which will include the formatting if it can.

LPT: If someone helps you at the grocery store or call center ask to leave positive feedback, it may help them and make their day.
Leaving positive feedback for small things is a great way to recognize and uplift people quickly and easily. Not only does it potentially help them grow their careers and give them a sense of personal success or joy, it enables positive behavior in your local environment that companies will hopefully reward and continue to push for.

LPT Fill awkward, accidental silence with intentional silence
Ok this one sounds a little strange, but bear with me. I’ve discovered that anytime I have an awkward silence with someone, speaking up and asking for a moment of silence can relax both people’s minds and reboot the conversation. It’s not quite as fumbling as it sounds.
Here’s what I mean
My wife and I were on vacation, 7 days into a trip that was just the two of us driving around an island. At our nightly pre-dinner drink, the conversation had run dry as soon as we sat at the bar. It wasn’t because we have nothing to talk about on a macro scale, but after days and days with just one person, sometimes you just come up short in conversation. We’re comfortable with silence, but we do usually talk and this was night-out-on-vacation, so we both wanted (or at least wanted to want) some conversation.
So as we’re sitting there, about 60 seconds into not having anything handy to say to each other and after some seat shifting, I said to her “I’m feeling kind of foggy right now. If it’s ok with you, let’s just sit here for a moment, take a deep breath, and drink this one in silence.” Yes, she did think it was a weird thing to say. No, I do not normally say things like this and reading this back to myself, I realize it sounds even more awkward than the silence. But we both trust each other, and after she gave me a little raised eyebrow, we sat there and finished most of the drink in silence. Once the awkwardness of imposed silence wore off, we just kind of rested. Soon my mind began to wander to topics outside the room we were in, and I figure hers did the same. Before I knew it, I organically had a thought I wanted to share with her, and that little blip of brain drift ended up generating a new conversation whose segues lasted through our stay at the bar.
I didn’t plan to say that I wanted a moment of silence, but the thought came to my mind, and I said it - and after I said it, it seemed out of place, but I couldn’t unsay it. And you know what? Not only did it work, but doing something out of the boundaries of what my partner expected of me felt good for both of us.
So I don’t know, give it a try.

LPT: Lilies are toxic to cats! Show your partner a picture before they buy Valentine’s Day flowers
My partner just got me the most beautiful bouquet of flowers but I realized upon receiving them that there were some lilies mixed in. He didn’t know that they were toxic and also didn’t know what lilies look like. If you think your partner might get you flowers this week and you have cats, show them some pictures of various lilies so they know what to avoid.

LPT: check the price per unit, not just the total price, when shopping for groceries to get the best deals
Most grocery stores in the US will show you the price per unit of products so you can see, regardless of the size of the package, exactly how much the product costs in absolute terms. This will help you find the best deals. One thing that's surprised me looking at the price per unit is that the larger sizes are not always the best deals. Sometimes buying multiple smaller packages of the same product will be lower price per unit than the larger packages.

LPT: Instead of spending time husking corn on the cob before cooking. Simply place corn (husk on) in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Roasting corn in their husks results in an easy mess free peel and optimal sweetness. This method is extremely fail-proof.

LPT: Use a drill to clean out a silicone tube nozzle to save a partially used tube of silicone
Find a drill bit that fits in the nozzle of the silicone tube, start drilling (slowly) as you push the drill bit into the opening, you can move it around once not much debris is coming out to get it all out. The drill bit breaks up the cured silicone and acts like an auger to bring out these cured/hardened bits. Once done you can start squeezing silicone out! If there is still more, can repeat a little more.
To store your silicone tube (if there is no cap), wrap the whole nozzle is saran wrap, wrap an elastic band around the saran wrap on the shaft of the nozzle, then squeeze out a dollop of silicone and using your fingers, shape it into a ball around the tip of the nozzle and leave it stored like this.
Just realized parts of this sound like I am talking about something NSFW, lol.

Well, just file a claim with your credit card company for a refund for incorrect charges. Then they will follow up with them and usually you'll get your money back without the customer care no-help scenario.
It's easier, and has much less headache involved.

Over the past few years, I developed a bad habit of playing with my phone while watching a film.
I recently started dating a lady who has a bit of hearing loss in one of her ears, so when we watch Tv together, she has the subtitles on.
I’ve now found myself playing less with my phone while watching Tv and finding it much easier to follow the storyline (not surprisingly).

LPT: Check in with your friends about their creative hobbies.
If you have a close friend who does digital art, makes music, paints, writes, etc., check in with them and ask what they've been working on and if they'll let you see it.
Chances are, not enough people in their lives ask them about their art, and they most likely would be incredibly happy to share something they're so passionate about with someone. As a creative myself, I know that anytime a friend really engages with something I make, it genuinely makes my day. It's also something I've been trying to do in my own life and it's genuinely led to some really positive and enjoyable interactions with friends.

LPT: You can go to auto parts stores and buy oil and a filter, then take it to an oil change place and have them use what you bought. They will only charge for labor. (I’m in US, idk if it’s common practice anywhere else.)
I go to Advanced Auto Parts, buy my oil and filter, then take it to Big O tires where they charge me $35 for labor. $33 for oil (the good high mileage stuff) + $10 for filter + $35 for labor = $78 plus tax. If I just go to Big O and have them provide everything it is $149.99 plus tax.
I told my friends and family about this and none of them knew this, so I figured I better out this out there!

LPT: One of the skills of "adulting" is understanding problems start coming in groups as you get older, no longer one by one. You have to learn to deal with issues often concerning your personal life, professional life, health (physical and mental), family, and/or finances all at once.
When we are young and growing up, middle-class kids usually have most, two big problems to deal with at once. But usually our issues came one at a time, and we attacked them that way: exams, friend/romantic break-ups, health problems, family crises, etc. Every other part of our lives could get turned down to a low simmer while we poured ourselves into studying for and taking exams, we liked our wounds from our break-ups, or we coped with the stress of a parent having a major health problem.
Once in a while, something would happen, like you found out your parents were getting divorced during your finals period, or your grandmother would die just a week after you got dumped. These would feel like major catastrophes coming together, and they were because you were young and didn't have good coping skills.
When you are older and in the work world, you will often find that you will be hit by rolling "shitstorms" of problems - you'll be diagnosed with a pretty major health problem around the same time you find out the next round of layoffs at work will likely include you, and your partner's car suddenly went on the fritz requiring a big outlay of funds to fix.
This happens all the time, and it's important to be prepared. Often trying the old method of putting other problems on hold while you work on them one at a time will make the whole thing worse. I find the key is really to just understand that multiple problems is expected and not to have an attitude that "everything else can wait while I deal with XYZ."

Dealership tried to change the price on a car by $500 while I had to run an errand and they drafted paperwork but because I had a screenshot of the price on their official website, I didn't have to pay extra. Side note: this was at a well known company dealership.
