LPT: How to save hours of time and gather information efficiently
It has existed since the 1990s, from the beginning of the internet, but few know about it. It's completely free and allows you to receive hundreds of articles in just a few seconds...
It's called RSS, in technical terms it's a protocol, but without delving into computer details, it's something extremely simple that can be used by anyone with a network connection.
Compared to social networks, where news appears according to algorithms' priorities, through RSS, they are ordered chronologically.
The information isn't received from other users but retrieved directly from the sources that published them. Today, 90% of websites support RSS; you've probably seen the icon somewhere, either in a corner or at the bottom.
Another great advantage is the ability to have all the news in one screen, aggregating various sources in one place. This allows you to centralize all the news without having to repeatedly open dozens of sites every hour to see what's happening in the world or regarding your interests.
In short, it saves time and intelligently organizes your news, all for free without any cost and without any advertising.
Personally, I regularly use it to keep track of the latest news on topics of interest to me without having to manually visit every single website. It's a very useful tool for saving time and staying updated efficiently.
Did you know about RSS? Are you already using it?

LPT Use recent snowfall to gauge your home’s energy efficiency
If you want a comparitive snapshot of your home’s energy use compared to others, take a walk around the neighborhood a day or two after it snows and look at the roofs. Houses with less insulation will melt snow quicker, and poor air sealing will show weird melting patterns.
For comparative purposes, you should look at roofs that face the same angle. If you’re looking at south-facing roofs, they will melt quicker as they face the sun. North-facing roofs will melt slower but it’ll take longer to melt (so you may have to wait extra time to see differences).
(Admittedly this tip is only good for more northern-locations)

LPT: Before buying anything from Amazon, use FakeSpot analyzer to determine whether or not the reviews and ratings are legitimate.
So FakeSpot is honestly probably one of the best tools I’ve ever discovered and I use it quite literally all the time. It supports other retailers beyond Amazon, but Amazon is what I primarily use it for. They have both a mobile app and a browser extension plugin. I use both and they’re great.
The website probably explains it better, but basically it uses AI to analyze product reviews, determine legitimacy and then spits out an adjusted rating based on what it deems to be the actual rating from real reviews. You would be SHOCKED how many products on Amazon have thousands of positive reviews, only to apparently be a facade for a sub par product. Looking back on to times in ordered “top rated” items on Amazon (before I knew about FakeSpot) and then been confused as to why they were crappy or broke easily, makes so much sense now.

LPT: Document your achievements each week or month. It will boost your faith in yourself, improve your self-esteem and make your more positive towards life.
Your achievements don't have to big enough. Mini achievements are enough. You could also note down any realizations you had about yourself or life.
Maybe you learnt something new in a personal project or in your job, maybe your learnt something completely new from a book, maybe you broke your best record in your workout routine, maybe you had a awesome time with someone, etc., etc.
The mind has a tendency to discard to the positive and focus on the negative. Documenting your achievements will help you focus on your positives.
If you do with consistently for each week, in a year you will have 52 different things to be proud of. This will greatly boost your faith in yourself. You will have a more stable set of firm beliefs about yourself.
Just celebrate the mini victories.

LPT: Join a credit union with rebates.
I saw the post about using a CC and paying it off every month and the OP called out that some things are obvious so not mentioned in the sub very often. So I thought I'd share this one.
Banks profit and pay shareholders. They do things like charge massive overdraft fees etc.
Credit unions profit and pay members. They often waive fees, and certainly have fewer fees than banks overall.
Some credit unions give money BACK to the members in good standing. (Good standing means paying loans on time, etc)
Dow Chemical Employee's Cried Union (and others) pay you back a portion of your interest. So if you get a loan with them (qualifying loans etc) at the end of the year they take a portion of their profits and give it back. Say (for easy math) that % is 50%. If you had a loan of 6% you would get 50% of that 6% back at the end of the year, meaning you paid an EFFECTIVE 3% on your loan.
Since 19080 Dow Credit Union has given back Since 1980, we've given back more than $295,000,000.00 Last year it was 35%.
This works for loans to you. E.g. you pay 6% but giveback was 50% so you effectively pay 3%, but also works FOR you with things like CDs etc. CD rate was 6%, payback is 50% 9% loan etc. (I'm sure my math is slightly off real numbers because of APR etc.

LPT: Falling asleep quickly by counting breathes.
This takes some practice but it's been very useful to help fall asleep after surgery with lingering pain and during days of high stress.
First get comfortable in bed, try on your back if possible to try and focus on the breathing exercise.
Next focus on slow breathes that you can get a few counts off during the in and out. Approx. 4 secs each.
Now, focus on breathing so slow that you can't feel it going in and out of your nose and mouth. And imagine that it is flowing in and out of an imaginary hole in your chest.
With each slow breath, count "in,2,3,4 ~ out,2,3,4" then imagine yourself sinking into the bed with each breath out.
I've found this very useful personally and it's a simple thing to practice, so give it a shot, change it up if you want! The key things for me have been that it focuses my thoughts on something slow and rhythmic and at the end of the night I'm asleep in seconds. Good Luck and Sweet Dreams.

LPT: Rewards Points Don't Matter. Studies prove people spend more when using credit cards than cash or debit cards.
Edit: ITT: people that think they're smarter than basic mainstream repeatable research.
https://upgradedpoints.com/credit-cards/credit-spending-facts-statistics/
"A study by the Sloan School of Management at MIT says people tend to spend more when using credit cards than cash. Not only are they more likely to buy something at a higher price, they also are likely to give larger tips and make more impulse buys."
"The Sloan School of Management at MIT looked into how the brain reacts to a credit card purchase. They created a study using fMRI technology to look at brain activity at the moment of purchase, when consumers make the “buy” decision either using cash or credit cards. They looked at the reward region of the brain and found that credit cards sensitize reward notions in the brain. The outcome is that simply swiping a card provides immediate pleasure in the form of the products bought, and where prices are only realized in a bill received weeks later."
"According to Consumer Reports, new forms of payment may do even more to dull the mental connection between spending and having less money. In research done by Priya Raghubir, Professor of Marketing at New York University, she asked people to rate on a 100-point scale how similar credit cards are to cash, with 100 representing cash. The average response: 72. When she asked about Apple Pay (digital wallet), the average was 56. The research clearly shows the feeling of spending cash is not the same as the feeling of spending with a digital wallet, similar to paying with a credit card, enticing people to spend more with the tap of their phone."
tl:dr: Reward points are there to make you think you're the exception. The CC Company may be giving you 2-5% cash back, but you're spending more than that because you're using a credit card.
Do not try to beat the credit card companies at their own game. Spend the money that you own.

LPT: Listen to what people say, not how they say it
Try to look past peoples' way of speaking and try to understand the central point they are making. We all come from greatly different backgrounds and upbringings which comes out in the way we communicate. It's easy to disregard the realities and opinions of people we view as unintelligent, and making an effort to bridge that gap leads to greater understanding and more worthwhile conversation. Everyone deserves a fair chance to be understood!

*Interesting comments here! My initial point was to suggest that we should try to look past linguistic differences between socioeconomic classes, races, cultures, etc... For example, how many Americans have a bias against southern accents.
My intent was not to suggest that you ignore other aspects of communication, such as body language and context, but I can see how that was unclear in my post.

LPT: cheaper rental cars
I figured this out by chance. A few months ago I was booking my rental car for 33 days in Sydney, Australia. Visiting family. First time I search I saw about $1k. So I ignored it thinking maybe I don't need a rental car after all. I searched again 2 days later on the aggregator website and now saw it for $800. At this point I thought l'd just suck it up and pay for a rental car. After booking the rental car, left the desktop browser tab open. The next day as I'm tabbing thru my tabs, I passed the aggregated website tab and it auto refreshed. I saw it now for $750. I ignored it because I don't care about $50, though I still kept that browser tab open. The next day I tab passed this same tab again and I watched it refresh and I saw $700. So now I canceled my previous booking and booked this one. By now l've definitely learned to keep that tab open. Two days later I tab passed this same browser tab and it auto refreshed and I saw $550. So I cancelled the previous booking and booked this one. I kept watching that browser tab for the next 2 weeks after that, never saw a cheaper price, and I actually watch the price continuously climb.

LPT: If you’re a man with long hair, go to a salon not a barber.
This might be obvious to some people, but it was not obvious to me. I started growing my hair out a few years ago. When my hair started to get dead ends, I would try to go to a barber to get it trimmed up. I went to three different barbers who usually cut it too short and one took out buzzers to give me a fade (I thought he was trimming my neckline and by the time I realized it was too late). Not to mention good barbers cost 50-100 dollars in my area.
My GF told me to go to her salon and it was night and day. They cut my hair perfectly. I attributed the shitty haircuts to my hair being curly, but it was because most barbers these only practice cutting hair short or medium length. For the same price as a barber, I sit in a massage chair, get my hair shampooed, diffused, and styled. I get shit from some of my friends for going to a salon, but I will never go back to a barber as long as my hair is this long.

LPT: Using a credit card and paying it off in full every month is more financially savvy than using a debit card
I’m tired of these really obvious LPT’s like boil a pot of water with the lid on. I’m sure this had to be posted 1000x, but it’s a good LPT nonetheless. I still come across people that don’t realize this:
1. Get a credit card. Let’s go with capital one venture for the example. It costs $60 annually
2. Purchase EVERYTHING on that card. Or be even savvier and use multiple cards. But for the sake of simplicity, one card.
3. Set your monthly payment to autopay the entire balance directly from your bank account. You will never accrue any interest this way
4. Watch the rewards rack up. You can get cash back, they will reimburse you for certain purchases off the rewards, or get gift cards. I get around $1,000 of digital Amazon gift cards per year off that one capital one credit card
Hope it’s helpful to someone!
