LPT: Are you hungry and or are you just bored? Simple, ask yourself if you would eat an apple.

An apple is something sweet, juicy and healthy but it isn't the food that one would normally think of if you are feeling the hunger pangs. I'm in no means overweight but I gained a few pounds because I was bored with nothing to do except munch on something, especially at work if there's down time. What helped me was my co-worker asking me if I'm bored or actually hungry, by thinking of eating an apple and see if you would still go for the apple or not in your current state.

LPT Live your life as if you’ve just reset your “game” of life to a previous saved point and are trying your best to avoid making a decision you aren’t confident with

“Live your life as if are living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now!" It seems to me that there is nothing which would stimulate a man's sense of responsibleness more than this maxim, which invites him to imagine first that the present is past and, second, that the past may yet be changed and amended.

LPT: Screw it! Secure your home

A good home security tip that you may have never thought about.... Most contractors install the plates with the supplied scrws which are only a half inch long and come out with one kick by a burglar. He installed 4 inch screws in their place that go through the door frame and into the framing of the house. They can kick for a long time before they get tired! You can see in the picture the screw in his hand is the screw supplied with the door hardware. Making a burglr make a bunch of noise and be foiled in their initial plan can not only give you time to arm yourself but they will most likely move on to an easier target.

LPT: be careful property insurance hopping for cheaper premiums. It may make you ineligible for certain repairs.

We tried getting insurance approval for roof repair after a particularly nasty storm but they denied it because they looked at historical weather patterns and blamed it on a previous bad storm back when we had a different property insurance.
Ended up having to spend a few thousand to fix it.

LPT Request: How to “shut off” during a vacation for a blue collar job?

I’m actually finally taking a vacation next week. Im a truck driver. It’s more a “staycation”, but I have plans to do things I enjoy and rest and stuff to make me happy.

I’ve done some searching on the subject, but can only find white collar solutions relating to email and computer work which isn’t me.

Looking for tips on not worrying about who’s covering my route, or if my truck is being used, or anything about my yard or what’s happening there. I tend to overthink a lot, and I want to actually be able to enjoy this time off and reset myself properly with my family.

This could apply to other blue collar jobs too like construction or warehouse work.

Thanks

LPT When buying a helmet make sure its independantly verified to actually protect you.

I was researching mountain bike helmets and came across a ton of them on amazon with fancy advertising about how much protection they have but they arent independantly tested at all. I found that Virginia Tech started helmet testing for their football team and has a pretty advanced lab they use to test all kinds of helmets, they have a list of what they have tested with ratings for how effective the helmet is. I found a few independent labs as well that tested random helmets from Amazon and most of them were completely obliterated with minimal force. They are just thin plastic that shatters.

CE ratings are tests done by the manufacturer to verify that the product meets govt safety and health regulations, I saw most helmets online diddnt even have that.

When buying a helmet, look for one that has some independent ratings and is certified in some way. Ignore the advertising. VT found $25 ones that were amazing and $300 ones that were totally worthless.

tl;dr when buying a safety helmet make sure someone other than the seller has confirmed it works.

LPT: Need to do percentages in your head? Think in terms of 1% and 10%.

Need to do 62% of 550 for some reason? Figure that 10% is 55 and 1% is 5.5. Then multiply accordingly. 55 times 6 comes out to 330 and 5.5 times 2 comes out to 11. Then 330 plus 11 is 341.

LPT check your dashcam today

Dashcams are easy to "set and forget" but they don't have ways to notify you if there is a problem. So take out the SD card and make sure the videos are still working. If yours has features like a battery or G force sensor, make sure the battery still has a charge, and you can just knock down the dashcam to test the G force.

Doing a quick test today could save you in an emergency tomorrow.

LPT: Cat owners, keep a big lightweight plate handy near your bed to avoid middle of the night carpet cleaning parties

When you inevitably awake to the dreaded sound (an impending cat puke), there’s not usually enough time to get your cat to move to a hard surface, and your attempts at intervention can freak your cat out and result in a worse mess than if you’d done nothing at all. And carpet cleanup is most effective when immediate, but it’s enough of a chore to wake you up and make it hard to get back to sleep afterwards.

Instead, bring the hard surface to them: keep a large lightweight plate handy (e.g. between your mattress and bed frame side rails), and when you hear the sound you can quickly grab it and slip it under your cat’s face. Makes for a much cleaner and quicker experience than the alternatives, and less stress for the cat too.

Now if only you could teach them to not pick the only carpeted room in the whole damn house to begin with….

LPT: 3 Tips to help you build a journalling habit

If you're wanting to start journalling, Here's how to get started

Here's 3 tips to help you get started so you can build a daily journaling habit:

1. Make it quick
Most people say they struggle to find the time to start journalling.

Start small and journal for 1 minute a day.

Start by taking 1 minute at the start of your day to note something you're grateful for. Or you can make a note of storyworthy moment at the end of your day. If you're not sure ehat that is, you can check out this article (link to storyworthy prompt)

Make it quick. Do it for 1 minute a day.

2. Make it easy
I used to struggle with blank page syndrome whenever I'd tried journalling in the past.

Now I journal every day without fail.

Discovering journal prompts made it easy for me to journal. Now I'm not scared of a blank page. I just answer 3 prompts in the morning and 1 at the end of the day.

Make it easy. Start with 1 prompt a day.

3. Make it enjoyable
Make journalling more enjoyable by tying something you enjoy to the process.

Temptation bundling is when you pair a habit or a task with something you want to do. It helps to trick your brain into enjoying the task more.

Here's how you can apply it to journalling:
• Listen to music while journalling
• Journal while enjoying a drink at your favourite coffee shop
• Buy a nice pen and notebook so you enjoy the process of journalling

I hope these tips helped.

LPT: Stop chasing your abstract future where you're finally happy, it's not real.

I wasted most of my adult life unconsciously chasing some future version of myself and my life that I would finally be happy. I was constantly annoyed or angry because everything was slowing me down from this existence I was rushing through life to get to. I finally realized what I was doing one day when I was stuck in traffic, pissed off at the world and a bluebird landed on my hood, something so simple made all that anger and stress disappear. I realized I was rushing through life to get to this point in time, that wasn't real, that I would finally be happy and that was actually what was keeping me from being happy.

LPT: the best version of you is the authentic you. Not a copy of someone else- this goes for looks, hobbies, personality, etc. love BEING you and always strive to be a little better every day, however you define “better”

I am not saying that you can be an ass or rude or make excuses for being a bad human by saying “I’m being authentically myself.” That is a cop out for being lazy and trying to get attention.

In the generation of seeing everyone’s highlight reel on social, please stop thinking that “if I do this/look like this/ act like this” then people will like me. Do you truly like yourself? Be authentic, but also always strive to learn, grow, and develop yourself into the best version of YOU. much love y’all.

LPT: If you want to understand what motivates you, track your emotions and activities for a period of time and explore the data objectively

Hi guys. I’ve been down an intense rabbit hole recently exploring what actually motivates meI’ve been tracking the emotions i feel throughout the day, and the types of activities and then doing analysis to see if i can notice patterns and test out different strategies.

These are the key takeaways from this week:

Consume less: I'm prone to anxiety first thing in the morning. If I don’t scroll social media and instead focus on my morning routine, it subsides in half an hour.

Learn the ingredients of a good day: Organisation + exploration + creation = good day (for me). I have a tendency to have intense organisation days that on the surface are productive but mentally drain me. I’ve used this knowledge to engineer better days when I'm in a low mood, shifting gears when my focus dips and topping up with creative work.

Explore resistance: Sometimes the absence of data is a good data point. I skip tracking when I’m socialising and on days where I'm not intending to be productive. This shows where I see value in tracking. I'm going to try and optimise where I can to make it as easy as possible.

The comfort zone: Unexpected positive events that occur throughout the day make me feel the strongest emotions. I’ve been seeking new experiences that I may have low expectations for to see what happens.

I'd be curious if anyone else has done something similar. What did you learn about yourself?

LPT: invest into a good mattress.

I bought my house about 2 years ago and my big purchase after moving in was my bed. I've always valued sleep and wanted to make sure that the missus and I would get good sleep. Between the pillows, sheets and bed, it cost a pretty penny, but its like sleeping on a cloud. We sleep under a weighted blanket to help me cut back on tossing and turning along with double sided pillows (cooling side and soft side). Unfortunately I shattered my ankle at work 2 weekd ago and had to have an external fixatur put on so im immobilized for the time being. I'm able to get around on crutches to go to the bathroom and whatnot, but I spend the most if my time in bed. Being stuck in bed for the past 2 weeks has made me realize how grateful I am to have prioritized sleep and invested in into a good bed. I highly recommend investing into a good sleep situation.

LPT: Make it a personal rule to only respond to things online that you have read completely.

Whether it’s an article, a post, or a comment, read it completely or just let it pass you by.

This benefits you in multiple ways:

1. You avoid getting involved in something you’re actually not that interested in.

2. You avoid spreading rumors and misinformation.

3. You sound smarter, because you’re only speaking on things you’ve taken a little time to understand.

4. People care more about what you have to say, because you usually know what you’re talking about.

5. You save a lot of time and energy because you make fewer mistakes, and because you are more choosy on which topics deserve your attention.

6. Conversation is more productive all-around if this is the norm, and discussions are much higher in value because we are listening to one another.

Remember, it’s okay to just NOT respond if you don’t want to read something. You get to decide for yourself. Your time online will be much more positive & productive if you make this a personal rule!

LPT: If you don't know how to console someone who's hurting just being around them helps

If you're bad with words/feelings and don't know how to verbally soothe someone who's going through a bad time just being in the same room with them can do a lot

It's called parallel play or being alone together, as in when you're both reading your own books, or one person is doing a puzzle while another plays a video game (without headphones/talking to someone else), etc. Just existing together counts. You don't have to talk to them repeatedly. This especially helps people who struggle with expressing their feelings or venting

LPT - pressure wash your artifical grass

I've had artifical grass down in the back garden (UK) for 7 or 8 years now. It was starting to look a bit rough and matted, with weeds growing through and generally looking worse for wear. I thought it was like a carpet, you get a certain lifespan from it and then it was worn out, so I was shopping around for a replacement surface.

A friend heard me and convinced me to let him clean mine up before buying new. He came round with a pressure washer, 2 hours later it looks as good as new. Bright, back to how it looked when first installed. I didn't think it could make that much of a difference! It does - saved me a few hundred quid if not more.

LPT - Save the name of people you meet with identifying details in your phone notes

Sounds simple but this one has been a life changer for me. Shortly after you meet someone new (when you have a good opportunity before you forget it) save their name in your phone notes with some identifying details such as where they work, where you met them, what they look like etc.

Then the next time you meet them (and you inevitably forget their name) you just look up them in your phone (helps to organise the list into groups of people such as “school parents”, “business acquaintances” etc) and you can say hello and their name with confidence!! The other person will appreciate it and you won’t have that awkward situation where you’re trying to remember their name.
