LPT: Got a new puppy? Start sensitizing them to people, other dogs, and experiences as soon as they have all of their shots
When I first adopted my GSD puppy she was 8 weeks old and had all her puppy shots. I took her anywhere I could that was dog friendly with me. We would go to outdoor malls, parks, breweries, and trails where I knew people would want to stop and pet her. Having so many different people giving her attention helped get her used to people, and she truly loved everyone she met.
I would take her with me to the dog park where she made some good friends, and I taught her how to associate with other dogs positively and not be afraid or too rough.
Also at a young age I exposed her to having her paws and snout touched for grooming. I got her used to the noise and feel of the nail grinder and would brush her teeth often so she wouldn't be afraid of it later when at the groomers. Positive reinforcement backed by treats helped this process so much. She expected a treat once her nails and teeth were done.
All of the above molded her into one great pup. She was a dog everyone wanted to be around. Just wanted to share this tip as it really is important for the development of a friendly dog.

LPT: Use paragraphs
I see so many comments online that are just a wall of text I don’t want to read. Organizing it into paragraphs makes it significantly easier for the reader to digest, and can help the writer organize their thoughts.
Each paragraph should start with a topic sentence. Each sentence after that can clarify, or build on that sentence. When you move to a slightly different topic, start a new paragraph.
I am no great writer, but I TRY. I think about how people might consume it. I know I could write better, so please put your red pens down. This is just a reminder about the basics.
There might be great insights in an 800 word stream of consciousness text block, but if they haven’t taken the time to organize it I’m not going to take the time to read it.

LPT: Trick automated phone menus into connecting you to a person.
You know those annoying automated systems; "Press 1 for this, Press 2 for this, Press 3 for this..."
They suck, especially once you start getting into submenus and just want to talk to a person. They can be tricked though.
This has worked like 90% of the time for me.
Whenever you get one of those automated systems and it starts listing choices, just quickly type in a random string of numbers. "3545325" for example. It will generally tell you it does not understand, and start going to the menu again. So do the same thing again, and then again. Normally after you do this 3 or 4 times it'll simply give up and say; "Please hold while we connect you with a representative". Thus you can get past 10 mins of menus and at least reach a person who will direct you quicker. It may not work on every system but like I said it's worked way more times than not.

LPT: Clicking “stop seeing this ad” to skip YouTube ads
So recently Youtube has been adding a ton of ads, which I think a lot of you have noticed.
Whilst on laptop you can use Adblock, on your phone’s Youtube app if you click on the top right and then “stop seeing this ad”, both ads lined up will be skipped (if there are two). This is really useful if you have two 15 second unskippables as well, as it only takes plus or minus 3 seconds. So just a small time saver.
PS. Youtube still ends up showing you the advertisements you don’t want to see so… the button doesn’t really work.

LPT - Often times the grass IS greener on the other side.
You often hear people say "The grass isn't always greener on the other side" as a deterrent for not making a life decision.
"What if your next job sucks?" "What will you do being alone after leaving a bad relationship?"
You know how many people leave their toxic relationship and end up thriving, almost disbelieving how they stayed in such an abusive relationship for so long?
You know how many people quit that job that they can tell is draining them and weakening their mental health by the day?
You know how many people leave their hometown to go to a major city far away and end up thriving?
The key is you need to accurately assess yourself. If things just feel they keep getting worse in your job, relationships, hobbies, home life.. It's time to find the greener grass, you're in a toxic yard.
We aren't here forever. You've got to maximize your time on this Earth.
And sometimes, things do get a little worse before better. Often being alone after leaving a relationship is the first big change, but then you start to rebuild and recapture who you are and you're thanking yourself for making the decision.

LPT: I have spent the past 7 years working on cruise ships in Entertainment/DJ ... Now what?
Hi, I have spent the past 7 years working on cruise ships in entertainment as a DJ for various cruise lines. My time there was beautiful and traumatic at the same time, When I'm on board for 5-7 months at a time I wish I was at home and vise versa. I have been home the past 2.5 years now, essentially no job, I cannot keep I job I either get fed up or I get fired, it's always been like this.
Basic jobs like serving/bartending, entry sales jobs annoy me and I just end up leaving. I have fell in love and fell out of love on ships many times and I guess I have struggled emotionally on ships. With that being said, I enjoy the work, entertainment and DJing every day and meeting new people is amazing but... it just doesn't pay enough anymore. I do some gigs at home here and there but it's not consistent and not enough to live on my own.
The past 2.5 years I've been living in my fathers basement, paying rent I don't even have, no girlfriend, small town and have been going back and fourth of working on the ship or not... I don't know what to do anymore.. I'm financially lost and I really just need help in finding something that I can enjoy.

LPT: Eating untasty, unseasoned, or badly textured foods or ingredients easily and quickly, as if it were tasty
Boiled eggs. I made them and didn't even put salt. But when you eat the eggs, the texture makes you a little bit sick, and so I go uncommonly slowly through the chewing motions. That's the effect of untasty food... or in this case ingredient... slowed down inefficient motions, which also dims the mind's motivation. The pro tip I discovered is, if you take out your whole tongue from the process of chewing, the texture element, which is unpleasant, goes away. (Taste also applies, the nonsalted eggs were fine.) To be more precise, you only use the tip of your tongue. This makes it way easier to quickly eat food as if it was tasty, getting the nutrients in fast (and without the need to make recipes).
I think this 'pro tip' could be applied to other untasty or badly tasting/badly textured food, if one needs to get the nutrients or not waste food in some situations, or just finish a prepared meal that didn't end up being tasty. It is pretty simple if one thinks about it, what mostly perceives taste and texture, if not wholly (I think my empty stomach feels the goo of the boiled eggs...), is the one surface of the tongue, so if you take it out of the digestive process, without losing the ability of manipulating the food and properly chewing and spreading the saliva, you achieve the same boost that tasty food gives. But I didn't know this, and every time I had to eat boiled eggs, it was always a slow and/or yucky experience. But this time I put my brain to work and found that the tip had all the abilities of the whole tongue, all the relevant abilities. I tried first to put the tongue on the roof of the mouth, but that's not how your mouth works... Then to the side. That's also not how the mouth in three dimensions works, also. The tip leads the way, unfazed by revolting masses of goo.
I have much to learn. But I think this worked in the test I did with the last of the 4 eggs I ate. I ate that egg remarkably as if it were a tasty food, and I don't think that was from the excitement of my discovery.

LPT: ABC of creating routines
Habits are a muscle that we train repeatedly, exactly like the muscles of the body, which we begin to train slowly so we don't tear ourselves, in the world of habits this would be when we get frustrated and give up.
Here are the steps: (it is very useful to make notes of each step, but that depends on each person)
* The first step is to define exactly what you want to change.
* Evaluate current routine and analyze things to incorporate and eliminate.
* Add small and sustainable changes over time
* Assign a time and space.
* Don't abandon anything you haven't done for at least a month.
* After the month you can adjust the habits you notice that can be done differently to enjoy them more or add new ones.

LPT : Run when they say : "At work, we are a family"
I work at this office where everyone seems so cool and fine, exchanging gifts from time to time, keeping it positive, happiness is in the air, no complaints, no gossips. What could go wrong, right?
...Well, that was too much for my introvert ass, and I always felt like that company lives inside a big cringe ball, but I was like come on, why don't you try and enjoy all the positivity, so I gave it a go for a while. Then it came time for a meeting and opinion exchange, everyone was like : everything is perfect in the company but we need to work on ourselves more and be more efficient... I was the only one who dug up some negative points, huge mistake, I made the sect angry xD since then I feel like I'm being pushed to quit, even by the furniture in my desk. Atmosphere changed, the family wants better members, those who don't mind a salary that didn't change after 5 years, and expect you to overwork, and work even on weekends when there's load, they want you to fully commit to them and prioritize work over your family needs.
There's a big surge of self help induced toxic positivity. Complaints, constructive criticism, and feeling bad from time to time is OK and healthy, don't force positivity. How can you feel good if you don't feel bad ? And remember family and mental health come first. Financial struggle is temporary, losing your family and or mind is not.

LPT If your fridge has drink holders, use them to hold chilled fruit, instead of soda.
Some of the time, I pass on purchasing sodas just because I know if I have it, I'll kill a case in just a few days.
But quitting the bubbly can be difficult too, when a craving kicks in however, drinking a good bit of water can help stave that off. It's just your body wanting to stay hydrated usually. Staying well hydrated helps, but... after a week or so it's the bubbles and sugar you start really desiring.
I used to eat a lot of fruit, and recently starting including more of it in my diet. Having cold tangerines or navel oranges in the soda holsters of my fridge door has been very helpful. I grab an orange when I've a craving, along with a glass ice cold water. I started associating the shelf more with fruit, rather than seeing them empty, wishing soda or beer was filling it up instead.
Couple this, will a soda stream for bubbly water (I LOVE lime/lemon juice in my carbonated water) and I feel it'd give you a good solid footing in helping to drastically cut down your soda intake. :)
Maybe not the most imaginative LPT, but I hope it helps!

LPT: when starting something new, always pre-determine your "kill criteria": the point at which you will change your action
This came up recently in my family. My daughter is trying out for competitive gymnastics. IF she makes it, there'll be significant commitments: hundreds of dollars per month in cost, anywhere from 4-12 hours in gym time, uniform costs, fundraising expectations, travel expectations, etc.
My wife and I argued about this until we decided on kill criteria. We set a maximum monthly fee. We set a maximum number of hours. We set a maximum number of travel weekends and a radius. We even set hard and soft limits: If the fees are even a penny over the max, it's a no. If hours are a minute over, it's a no. If the travel weekends are lower than our max, we can be flexible about the radius.
We also did the same with my doctoral studies: we set a hard budget and timeframe. Once that timeframe or dollar limit was reached, its over.
We did the same with a major renovation project: we came up with a budget for the main job, but also had a list of our "wants". If those total wants added more than $X or Y days to the project, you had to scale back until it was on time and on budget.

LPT: Make it a habit to go through this checklist regularly when having pets! It only takes a couple of minutes and it can save significant troubles on the long run.
1. Paws/Claws: Regularly check paws for injuries, foreign objects or infections. Keep nails trimmed, as long nails can cause significant discomfort and even alter movement style, leading to joint issues.
2. Ears: Lift each ear and check for signs of infections and cleanliness. Pay attention if there is any change in how the ears smell.
3. Teeth/Gums: Inspect for plaque, pay attention if there is bad breath. While brushing pets teeth is not always in our favorite list of things to do, there are certain chewables which may assist in maintaining better teeth hygiene.
4. Eyes: Ensure they are clear, without redness or discharge.
5. Skin/Coat: Look for parasites, allergies, and maintain a healthy coat.
6. Body/Movement: Check for any abnormalities or walking issues.
7. Clean Water: Always make sure they have fresh and clean water. While this may seem obvious, some pets (like dogs) may spill their water bowl accidentally or even in purpose. Hence just filling few litres and thinking it's enough for the day may be risky.
8. Worm medication: While not relevant for all pets, cats that go outdoors for example will inevitably get parasites from mice they eat. Dogs in exchange may eat cats litter (they seem to find it a rare delicacy) and get those parasites themselves. Those parasites rob the body of essential minerals and vitamins. Only way to get rid of them is through worm medication. Depending on the need, even up to every 3 months may be required for cats. Don't underestimate the need for deworming.
This last item is not required to do very often but nevertheless, once every 2 years or so, once your pet (specially dogs snd cats) starts getting older. Always make sure to take them for teeth x-ray. Tooth pain is just as horrible for them as it is for us humans, except that they may have a much higher pain tolerance and may not inform us about it. A simple teeth x ray will show if any tooth is bad enough to need treatment or removal.
Have I forgotten something else vital? I didn't mention vaccinations, as I thought that is too obvious.

LPT Pay $7 to exterminate large cockroach infestations, do not pay an exterminator $700
What exterminators sell you is garbage and they know it. Your average cockroach "extermination" can cost upwards of $700. A jar of powder, $7. A proper application is pet and child safe as well.
You can get a small jar of boric acid (note: NOT Borax) at your local pharmacy for like $7 and just a few spoon fulls can kill a large infestation in about 3 days. A jar will probably last you a life time, unless the issue is coming from a neighbour, then it might take a whole jar to make sure the roaches spread the powder further and further around
Three reasons why boric acid works so well:
- Cockroaches eat their own, the dead become bait
- The powder spreads rapidly because roaches pick it up and trail it back to the nest
- Boric acid paralyzes them from the inside out by killing their nerves
The powder is most effective if you apply a layer of dust on the floor that is BARELY visible, like a fine dust. What I did was stood on a chair with half a spoon and blew it hard into each corner of the walls, on the stove, under the fridge any places they were at basically. To be safe tho I just did the whole house. Every surface.
Any time I saw one live, I wouldnt kill it, I'd sprinkle a decent amount so it can basically "haul" a "truck load" right back to the mother land.
If you notice live ones by day 4-5 but they look confused (they will usually just circle), leave them and wait til day 7, if you see functioning ones by then, sweep up and start over. 2nd time will kill any size infestation easy. You can leave dead ones if you want but if you just want to start over thats fine
This also works extremely well with ants because no queen = no colony but even then it doesnt matter because death spreads so rapidly deep within the colony it will simultaneously kill the workers, the feeders, the babies and the queen.
P.S. after applying to all floors / rooms, the darker and empty the better

[LPT] A simple rule to beat procrastination and get rid of low-priority tasks
Here's a simple rule to beat procrastination and get rid of those maybe-someday tasks.
* Estimate how long it'd take you to complete the task if you work solely on it. (e.g. make a proof-of-concept application for an area of interest - 8h)
* Take a multiplier (e.g. 10-20x) and multiply it with the time. (8h \* 10 = 80h) That timespan from now, within the limits of your available time, will be the deadline. Taking the example above, you need to create the proof-of-concept within the next 80h of your available time. Otherwise, you shouldn't do it at all. Assuming you have 10h of free time every week, your deadline would be in 8 weeks.
* For smaller tasks, that take 1h or less to complete, group them by week. Sunday of the week would be the deadline. If you have a lot of smaller tasks, schedule them for the next week(s). Scheduling them is completely rational. Choose an appropriate multiplier depending on the amount of such maybe-someday tasks you have, how much time you want to have before working on the task (for thinking about the method of execution or better alternatives), and how fast you want to go. BTW, it's normal if you don't get to do most of those tasks. The fact that they are maybe-someday-tasks itself means that they are not important enough to be of high priority. This method works by creating scarcity (only if you actually hold yourself accountable to the deadlines), forcing you to prioritize. However, I would not use this method on high-priority, very-low-urgency tasks - you *have* to do those, and therefore any self-set deadline would have no meaningfulness. You can also adapt the rule to force yourself to do something at a timespan within a day (e.g. working out before 1pm - otherwise you've skipped).

LPT If you're looking to feel more inspired in life, try tracking your emotions
This is my favourite rabbit hole, and I’m not sure I’ll ever get out of it. I’ve been tracking my emotions and behaviour for about a year now, because, a. I find it fun, and b. I think self awareness is a great skill to have. So here you go, this is what I’ve learned:

Defining inspiration: I knew before I started tracking I needed to be clear on what inspiration meant to me. After a bit of thought I decided inspiration occurs because the following things happen:
I recognise my own limits
I see potential for growth in new ideas
I am open to explore the new possibilities even if the outcome is unknown
It’s not only for the rare few: I’ve always assumed that inspiration is this mythical state that certain people get, and others don’t. I don’t believe that’s true anymore, when I tracked, I saw patterns. If you are never inspired, you need to try new things.
It’s not a one fits all kind of deal: I tried the traditional route to find inspiration: Traveling and experiencing as much as I could. What I realised after looking at the data from that time and now was that I wasn’t inspired at all. I was exhausted.
My personal recipe to feel inspired: This is what I uncovered once I reflected on the data. Quite simple isn’t it?
Reading biographical accounts of people's experiences and stories
Listening to podcasts on human nature and happiness.
Having deep conversations with trusted friends.
Figuring out what inspires you: I’d recommend emotion tracking, and seeing which activities elicit the inspired feeling, and then further research those areas. Ai can help if you give it a backstory and ask for specific media etc.

LPT: Hotels are the far superior option for public washrooms.
I am a career salesman. I have had to use washrooms of almost every variety and level of cleanliness. One thing I learned early, is use Hotel washrooms. Any hotel above a 2* is gonna have a solid washroom.
Almost all have conference centers of some kind that have a bevy of washrooms around them. Typically those conference centers are not in use so the area is empty, quiet and clean. When they are in use they are just as quiet and clean.
No one asks you anything or looks at you weird if you just walk into a hotel and breeze by the front destk, the conference centeres are always the thing most clearly labeled for you to find. It doesn't matter if its 11pm or 4 am, you can go in and use a safe clean washroom.
Almost every time I have had a glorious floor to ceiling door type stall has been in a hotel as well.
It's a much less stressful way to take a washroom break, you don't have to buy anything or ask for a key. If you have a kid you can just scurry fast to the washroom and no one bats an eye.
Hotel washrooms are the safest bet in washroom situation and are as numerous as any other options out there.
