LPT: Write a letter

I've not had a satisfactory experience with the VA until I wrote my Congressman. His office called me back to hear more, and then leaned the Congressman's weight onto the VA. I got satisfaction quickly after that.

I have been struggling with my State to get public health insurance for my family. I wrote to my State Assemblyman. He leaned against the system, and my family got medi-"state".

I had more trouble with the VA. I wrote to the patient advocate, and eventually got what I was after.

On the other hand, when people do their jobs outstandingly, I also write a letter. I write to their bosses about how outstanding they are. It usually gets somebody recognized, and both our worlds are better for it.

Email is good, but if necessary, put your letter into an envelope with a postage stamp.

LPT: Write a letter.

LPT Request: How to dispell imposter syndrome?

I've struggled with imposters syndrome since starting my career in conservation two years ago. Since then I've had four jobs as a conservation scientist and despite fulfilling my duties I've yet to dispell this feeling of faking it.

In my last role I received only positive feedback and my monitoring efforts and the report I wrote led to the budget for the monitoring position I was in increasing by 100%.

This feeling has only intensified as I've just applied for and received an offer to interview for a highly competitive position as a research scientist in Antartica.

How can I learn to believe in my abilities and smash the forthcoming interview?

Thanks.

LPT Instead of saying "I have to.." say "I get to.."

A simple reframe I've learnt about recently that has made me more grateful:

Instead of saying "I have to.." say "I get to.."

I take things for granted when I think I have to do it.

"I have to go to work"

But when I think of what I get to do, it makes me more grateful.

"I have to go to work" becomes "I get to work as a pharmacist"

It reminds me of what I've achieved.

But also reminds me that there might be someone who wishes they could do what I do, so I should be grateful.

A small change in words but a big change in how I feel.

Try it for yourself and see how you feel.

The next time you find yourself saying "I have to..." change it to "I get to.." and see how blessed you are.

LPT: How to negotiate higher salary?

Received a job offer and the recruiter told me the salary range was $70k-$90k. However, they want me to work in the Hamptons in NY and that's a very high cost of living area. In the compensation package, they offered $39.97/hr with $550 COLA monthly. Currently I make about $15k less a year than what they are offering but l'm in a low cost of living area in TX. I believe they are a part of a union but I don't know if that has anything to do with the max they can pay you. The median income in the Hamptons is about $121k. I'm not trying to move out there and be struggling when I can just keep my same job for another
3-4 months. Should I just ask for the $90k and an increased COLA payment or ask for more than $90k? Or should I walk away?

LPT: Get a helium balloon down from the ceiling.

I literally learnt this yesterday and it’s a game changer as I work in a bar and balloons get stuck on the ceiling far more than I’d like to admit, plus it’s also really fun.

Get a spray bottle, specifically one where you can turn the spray into a single stream jet (most have a little twisty thing on the nozzle that will do this). Fill it with water and spray the balloon. The water will stick to the balloon causing it to get too heavy to float, and it will sink down to the floor. Incredible fun, incredible ease.

LPT: Welcome the new person at work.

This is something I have learned over my career that has led to several great opportunities and advancement in my career. First impressions are huge, and often "stick" despite further interactions. So make your first interaction with someone who is new to the company (especially if they are in a more senior position) a good one. Spend a few minutes to welcome them, show them around, give them a tip or two about office/workplace culture (do NOT gossip about other employees).

At the end of the day, anyone walking into a new job has some anxiety (no matter how confident they seem). They know they are on display and are the outsider. By immediately welcoming them, you are creating good will that can last much longer than the role you currently are in. I'm constantly surprised how such a minor thing has opened up so many longer term opportunities in my career, by people who I had limited interaction with outside that simple gesture on their first day.

LPT : (Request) How to stop being bitter/jealous ?

I trade stocks for a living, its my life. Recently a friend of mine got into it, and had some insane beginners luck.

They bought a stock at 33 cents, and it's now over 10 dollars, and they made over 100k from a 5k investment. The stock just keeps going up everyday no matter what, and I am extremely jealous and bitter. It literally has no effect on me, and this is a friend that I did have a personal relationship with, but we ultimately went our separate ways. It bothers me way more than it should, and I don't understand why.

I want to be a person who is happy for their friends, but I can't get myself to stop being bitter and jealous.

LPT Request: How to be an adult in the kitchen

Long story short, I need to learn to be better when it comes to cooking for me and for my wife. I have my reasons, some excuses, some true reasons, why I haven't made the effort or can't make the effort to learn how to be creative. More specifically, I want to be able to on a whim look at our pantry/fridge and be able to come up with something. If it's not a recipe, my mind just goes numb and can't figure anything out. It can be simple stuff, but there's the stipulation that one of us is vegetarian and the other is not. That's hardly an excuse or anything, as I'm aware most things can be made with the meat separately. I'm tired of letting my wife down, of letting my body down by eating nothing but convenience food, and of just feeling like a 12 year old about to be 30 in the kitchen.

Please help.

LPT: Take a driving course to not only learn how to drive the average vehicle, but to also learn how to drive medium sized vehicles like panel vans and even smaller sized trucks.

So,

I'm going to be turning 34 this year and I've been driving since I was 16 or so. In the past I would have said I was a decent driver with relatively decent experience under my belt. In the past 18 years I've been driving I've driven a Uhaul across the country multiple times and just done a lot of decent driving in all kinds of weather and conditions. So, I would have said I was a decent driver.

Last year I applied for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier, you know the folks who deliver the mail. That job didn't work out due to the nature of how they schedule people, but that's another story. Anyways, one of the things they have to teach you is how to drive the mail trucks and panel vans. We're talking some big sized vans that you see people living out of van life style, those sizes.

It was a full 8 hour course of learning proper driving technique, road safety, parking and obstacle course driving. It had its boring moments and was very interesting driving from what would be the passenger side on a standard U.S. vehicle. However, this was a great experience for me. It was also a refresher course on how to properly drive.

You see, something that the average driver doesn't realize is that we tend to fall into bad driving habits and not even notice. We fall into this habit of thinking "I didn't cause an accident, therefore I'm a great driver." Some people don't even think that way, they just go and think they are fine as a driver. There are people who DO get into accidents and just blame the other person or the world.

What I'm getting down to is that it was a great experience for me going back to the roots of driving and USPS actually has a great driving class. My driving technique and my confidence in my driving technique has skyrocketed.

Obviously this life pro tip is not for everyone, just saying it's a great idea for anyone to do it if they want to. It has many benefits and is not a bad card to have up your sleeve to be honest. I'm actually thinking of getting a CDL license just for the challenge and to boost my driving confidence even more. It's just a suggestion for those who think they could benefit from something like this.

TL;DR - I took a driving course last year and it did wonders for me as a driver. Increasing my skill and boosting my confidence as a driver on the road. It was a great experience and I highly recommend it for anyone out there. Especially if you don't feel all too confident in your driving skills. Even if you are confident, it can help to refine your technique.

LPT 3 Tips to get better sleep

3 years ago i was on my way home from work and started to fall asleep while driving.

It was scary.

I thought i was getting a good night's sleep but i started to notice i was still feeling tired and sleepy.

My focus wasn't as good and i found it hard to concentrate.

As soon as i could I booked a GP appointment and was eventually diagnosed with sleep apnea.

Ever since this happened, I've realised the importance of sleep.

I learned about the best ways to improve your sleep.

If you're looking to improve your sleep, let me save you some time and let you know the best ways I've found to improve sleep.

1. Stop caffeine after 12pm

You wouldn't drink a quarter of a cup of coffee at 11pm, but this is what is left in your system if you drink caffeinated drinks after 12pm.

Caffeine has a quarter-life of 10-12 hours.

This means that if you have a cup of coffee or tea after 12pm, you'll still have a quarter of a cup of coffee in your system as your going to sleep.

Not a good idea if you want a good night's sleep.

2. Move Your Phone Away From Your Bed

Your brain can't relax when you sleep with your phone next to the bed.

There's always a part of it that stays alert waiting for a notification. By moving the phone away from the bed, your brain can relax fully.

Leading to more restful sleep.

3. Exercise

My CPAP machine reports on the quality of my sleep.

I've noticed that whenever I'm exercising regularly, my sleep quality improves.

With improved sleep I've found that my energy levels are higher, I'm able to focus better and concentrate for longer.

Have you got any sleep tips that have worked for you?

LPT: Point your flashlight upwards, not forwards, in buildings.

If you're ever in a power outage and have to rely on flashlights to see in your house, hold them near your side and point them straight up at the ceiling. This will disperse the light more and your eyes will adjust easier so you can see better.

When you hold the light forward, you're looking at a very bright, mostly concentrated light that makes it ultimately more difficult to see anything not within the lights path. If it's up at the ceiling the room will likely be lit enough for you to see everything relatively easily once your eyes are able to properly adjust. Holding them to the side helps prevent you from seeing the actual light in the flashlight, holding it higher also helps! You can set it down like a little lamp too so you have more freedom !

note: may not work as well if you have particularly high ceilings or a dim flashlight, but it should work in most cases.

LPT Keep an insulated bag in your car to prevent frozen food from melting or to keep hot food hot

There have been times I bought frozen items at the grocery store only to get stuck in traffic on the way home or realize that I needed to make another stop first. Having an insulated bag in the car can prevent them from thawing/melting. It can also keep take-out food warm. I keep one folded up under my passenger seat at all times and it’s been surprising how often it comes in handy. If you have a spacious trunk or SUV you could even keep a small cooler in there.
