LPT: If you want someone to help you, ask for their advice, not their help.

People are far more willing to offer insight than labor. Asking for “advice” boosts their ego, shows respect, and often leads to more help than asking directly for assistance.

LPT - A twist on credit card fraud

This is ongoing for my wife and I, and I am still in awe of the creativity some criminals have.

A few months back, my wife received an alert on her phone that there may be fraudulent activity on her credit card. Sure enough, there were three small (around $25 each) transactions flagged and we responded they weren't ours.

Charges reversed, credit card replaced. No worries, right? Well, these crooks emptied our Rewards account, something we didn't realize until months later when we were planning a vacation and thought we'd try and use some of those points. I mean who regularly checks their Rewards balance?

We are talking almost 500K points accumulated over many years. These crooks used the points to book a bunch of flights from JFK New York to Salt Lake City and Vegas (multiple trips), airports nowhere near where we live, btw.

We are fighting to get our points back but it's a long and complex process.

Hopefully, this post will remind everyone to check any rewards you have accumulated when your credit card is compromised.

LPT: Maybe it's just me, but I've found that talking to yourself in a absurdly mocking tone is a great way to motivate yourself to do things you've been avoiding

One - because it gives me a bit of a laugh, but two: because it really puts into perspective how absurd some problems are.

You probably know the tone I mean. The over-exaggerated playground bully, or whatever "tHiS tYpInG sTyLe" encapsulates. Like "oh, the bIg bAby doesn't want to do his taxes! must be so hard to have money waaaaaahhhh". Or, "aw, someone doesn't want to get out of bed today! What's a matter, is it tOo cOld for your wittle feetie weeties? Too cold for the baby's feetie weeties?!".

It sounds ridiculous I know! But honestly if it gets me to do things, I don't care. And if it can work for anyone else who might be having a hard time out there, I thought it might be worth sharing my own weird little "habit" haha

LPT: When meeting someone new, say their name out loud as soon as they introduce themselves—it tricks your brain into actually remembering it.

Ever forget someone’s name five seconds after they tell you? It’s not just you—it’s how our brains work. The trick? Say their name out loud immediately after they introduce themselves.

If someone says, “Hey, I’m Jake,” don’t just nod. Instead, respond with something like, “Nice to meet you, Jake!” That tiny action forces your brain to process the name instead of letting it slip away.

If you want to lock it in even more, try using it again a few minutes later. Something casual like, “So Jake, how do you know everyone here?” This simple habit makes people feel more valued and makes you way better at remembering names—something that instantly makes you more likable.

LifeProTips

LPT: If you're struggling to understand a topic, "teach" it to an imaginary student who asks annoying, detailed questions.

If you're stuck on a difficult subject, pretend you’re explaining it to a younger sibling or a clueless but curious friend who keeps interrupting with “why?” and “how does that work?”

How to do it:

1. Take a blank sheet of paper or open a document.
2. Write down or say aloud the topic you’re trying to understand as if you're explaining it to someone with no prior knowledge.
3. As you explain, force yourself to answer “why” after every major point—just like a little kid would.
4. If you get stuck, that’s your weak spot—go back to your notes or textbook until you can confidently explain it.

Why it works: This forces your brain to fill in the gaps and reorganize information in a way that makes sense, activating deep processing instead of passive memorization. It’s far more effective than rereading notes because you’re actively engaging with the material.

Bonus tip: If you can explain something without using jargon, you truly understand it. If you can't, you need to simplify your thinking!

LPT Moving to a new state

Hello everyone, I recently just graduated with my masters and have been looking for a job, but unfortunately, I cannot find any in my current state. However, I was offered a high paying job and they would cover the moving fees to move to a completely new state where I would not know nobody, I am pretty nervous to go since I would not know any friends or family there but what makes me feel better is it would be a good move for my career and give me more experience on my résumé to hopefully move back to my current state, another pro is is that I would be with a cohort of people that would all be in the same boat as me by relocating, but overall feeling pretty anxious about it and would love some tips to feel better about it or would you personally stay?any advice would be great thank you

LPT Never lend a huge amount of money to family members.

I learned this lesson the hard way, as I lended my sister almost 4k recently. I ended up needing that money after a while. This brought so much resentment between us to the point that I don’t think our relationship as brother and sister will be the same ever again. From that day I said to myself, to only give away small gifts as money if they need them but never lend again, especially to family members.

LPT: The best time to search for a job is when you already have one.

People generally stay complacent in their position because it's comfortable, but they may be missing bigger and better opportunities.

When you are jobless and searching, you are often desperate to find anything that could fit your skills. This gives the employer all of the leverage.

If you are searching while you are currently employed, you can ask for so much more because you are "desirable." This gives you all of the leverage.

Instead of trying to similarly match your previous salary, you can make demands for 10-20% more money, more PTO, or other quality of life benefits.

If it all fails, you were in no less of a spot than if you hadn't looked.

LPT: Utilize the "Courtesy Flush"

The courtesy flush is not a joke that people say to indicate the bathroom smells.

It is a legimate way to help prevent the smell of your bowel movement from stinking up the entire restroom.

If you're going in a public restroom, or someone else's restroom, after you drop the first "large one" and you plan on sitting a while, courtesy flush the toilet.

If you're having some stomach issues and won't be standing up for a while, courtesy flush the toilet between bursts.

It may not seem like much, but the longer your deliverable is sitting in the toilet, the more of it's smell will diffuse into the restroom.

So, do us all a favor and remember to courtesy flush.

Also, extra tip: don't be embarassed going #2 in the restroom. Do your business. Don't freeze up when someone walks in and try to not make a sound. It makes it uncomfortable for everyone. It's not shocking to hear a fart or some bumpy pushes when you're in a restroom. Just go for it.

But if you want to be polite, courtesy flush the toilet.

LPT: When using Google to research for school, add “filetype:pdf” or “site:.edu” to your search to instantly find high-quality academic sources.

Instead of digging through random websites and unreliable sources, **you can instantly filter Google search results to find scholarly articles, textbooks, and research papers** by using these simple search tricks:

1. **Find academic papers & books:**
* Search: *“computer science basics filetype:pdf”*
* This limits results to **only PDF files**, which are often textbooks, academic papers, or official guides.
2. **Find information from universities (.edu) or government sources (.gov):**
* Search: *“history of climate change site:.edu”*
* This limits results to university websites, where you’ll find lecture notes, studies, and research papers.
* You can also use **site:.gov** for government reports or **site:.org** for non-profit research.

**Why it works:** These filters **cut out clickbait articles, blogs, and unreliable sources**—giving you **only legitimate, high-quality materials** in seconds. It’s a game-changer for writing research papers or studying efficiently!

**Bonus Tip:** If you hit a paywall, copy the article title and search it with **filetype:pdf**—many papers are uploaded for free elsewhere!

LPT: You don’t need a perfect plan to do what you want. Many problems will resolve once you start.

We often think we need a perfect plan before we do anything, but that’s not true. Once you start, a lot of problems just solve themselves. The more you do, the clearer things get.

Waiting for the perfect plan can just hold you back. Once you take the first step, you’ll learn and adjust as you go. The fear of failing can stop us from starting, but once you’re in motion, you realize that progress is way better than perfection. So next time you’re stuck, remember: you don’t need everything figured out, just start.

LPT: if you need a little dish soap to go into one dish, just put the tip of the dish soap bottle into the stream of water going into the dish

This is a very tiny LPT, but I figured it was worth posting if we can keep some detergent out of our watersheds. Most of the time if you’re just setting some crusty dish to soak and you want a little soap in it, an actual squeeze of the bottle would be way more than you need. The amount that will wash off the nozzle of the dispenser should be all you need. Save some soap money, save some fishes!

LPT for people with braces

As an orthodontic assistant for 23 years I can give this advice to anyone in braces:

Do not allow the orthodontist to remove your braces (except for health reasons) until you are happy with your teeth.

You have paid for a service. Their job is to make you happy with your smile.

Before you get them off, check for:

Spaces between teeth. Are they left there for a reason?

Are there any teeth still rotated? There should not be. Your arch should be a perfect arch.

Is your bite (the way your top and bottom teeth fit together) comfortable?

Are they flared out too much? Can you easily close your lips when resting? This is a tough one as teeth/mouth/jaw issues are all are involved. There are lots of things we can do to fix it.

The important thing is to ask and to make sure that you get real answers that you understand and are comfortable with.

Understand that some things are not possible but you should have an understanding of why it isn’t. Do not let the office rush you out of treatment if your concerns have not been addressed.

Have the discussion if you are not happy. If the braces come off and you then say… I don’t like x,y &z. The only option is to put the braces back on. Which is a pain in the ass for both you and us.

We would much rather have you say “wait! what about this?” Than to have you unhappy with the result. We are human and maybe we don’t see what you do.

I don’t care if you are 14 or 99. Ask questions at your appointment.

If you don’t know what an appliance is for, ask. If you don’t understand why we are asking you to do something, ask. Being educated and engaged. about your treatment is important.

LPT: how to keep hard taco shells from closing up when baking

Do you hate it when you bake your hard taco shells and they close up like a clam? Making it almost impossible to fill them without the shell breaking. Well just bake them with that cardboard insert and the shell will stay wide open. Then save the cardboard insert(s) in a plastic baggie to use next taco Tuesday night until you can cover all the tacos.

Edit: you separate the shells and put 1 insert per taco. Save the inserts until you have enough for all your tacos.

Edit 2: Turns out there are a lot of easier ways to accomplish this. Read through the comments if you have struggled with those damn shells closing on you. Lots of good methods suggested.

LPT don't ask permission to do a paternity test if someone says you're the father. You don't need their consent or permission, because you're the father.

I've seen numerous posts of ruined relationships etc, for asking to do a paternity test on a child.

Why are you asking permission or even letting them know? You don't need permission, you're by their admission the father. So do as you wish without their knowledge.

Baby daddy drama aside you should get one done when leaving the hospital anyway. 1 in 1000 births result in a near switch. An 1 in 15,000 involve an actual switch.

Make sure that shit is yours

(Edit... apparently people have no idea how a paternity test works. Well Google that for yourself. And no I don't need a newborns consent, they lack the ability to consent. Also generally, you don't need your child under 18 consent for this test. Also the point is to do it about 18 years sooner....)
