Ranking Every Season of the Klopp Era

The Jurgen Klopp era at Liverpool is sadly just a couple weeks away from being over. I was feeling nostalgic and thought it would be fun to reminisce about his time here by ranking all nine of his seasons as our manager from worst to best.

9. 2015/2016

Premier League: 8th place, 50 pts, +13 GD

Europa League: Lost in Final to Sevilla

FA Cup: Lost in Round 4 to West Ham

League Cup: Lost in Final to Manchester City

It's a testament to Klopp that the team was never worse than they were in his first season. Even though this team ranks last (mostly because of the 8th place PL finish), they still came close to winning not just one, but two major trophies. This was also the year of that unforgettable EL quarter-final against Dortmund, the first truly great moment of the Klopp era.

8. 2022/2023

Premier League: 5th place, 67 pts, +28 GD

Champions League: Lost in Round of 16 to Real Madrid

FA Cup: Lost in Round 4 to Brighton

League Cup: Lost in Round 4 to Manchester City

I don't imagine there will be much disagreement about the bottom two spots on this list. The 22/23 team may not have been the worst, but it was undoubtedly the most disappointing. There was a point mid-season where it felt like we might not even finish in the top 8. That being said, we beat the scum 7-0, so it wasn't all bad.

7. 2020/2021

Premier League: 3rd place, 69 pts, +26 GD

Champions League: Lost in QF to Real Madrid

FA Cup: Lost in Round 4 to Manchester United

League Cup: Lost in Round 4 to Arsenal

Holy injury crisis. To this day, I'm amazed that this team somehow finished 3rd in the league. Things got absolutely grim for a while there. This was of course the COVID year where 99% of our matches were played with no fans, making an already depressing season even harder to watch. There was also that game against Villa that shall not be mentioned. But the boys managed to end the year on a real high note, culminating with Alisson's goal against West Brom which is surely a top 3 moment of the Klopp era. I broke the blinds on my window celebrating that goal.

6. 2016/2017

Premier League: 4th place, 76 pts, +36 GD

FA Cup: Lost in Round 4 to Wolverhampton

League Cup: Lost in Semi-finals to Southampton

Klopp's second season in charge saw the Reds secure Champions League qualification for just the second time in the last eight years. Sadio Mane was brought in from Southampton and made an instant impact. Him, Firmino, and Philippe Coutinho at the height of his powers made for some really entertaining football. I think this team can more or less be summarized by the car meme.

5. 2017/2018

Premier League: 4th place, 75 pts, +46 GD

Champions League: Lost in Final to Real Madrid

FA Cup: Lost in Round 4 to West Brom

League Cup: Lost in Round 3 to Leicester City

This season will always hold a very special place in my heart, because in my opinion it's the season when everything changed. Mohamed Salah came in and immediately took the Premier League by storm, setting the record for goals in a season with 32. Man City ran away with the league title this year, but it was Liverpool who ended their invincible run. A stunning win over that same City team three months later in the Champions League quarter-final ignited the Klopp vs. Pep rivalry that would come to define English football for the next several years. This season had some low points, no doubt, but this was when you could tell that Klopp was really building something special, and that Liverpool were going to start competing at the highest level again.

4. 2023/2024

Premier League: Most likely 3rd place

Europa League: Lost in QF to Atalanta

FA Cup: Lost in QF to Manchester United

League Cup: Beat Chelsea in Final 🏆

Ok so obviously this season isn't quite over yet. But at the time I'm writing this we have three games left and I can't see this ranking being

What are these prices Nike??

$70 a kit for an infant. $80 for a toddler. $95 for men's stadium. $156 for a match jersey.

What is going on here? Am I the only one who thinks these prices are insane?

What does Slot need to achieve in his first year for LFC fans to consider him a success?

TLDR; Will Slot have a better time being a manager for LFC compared to Ten Hag in terms of unrealistic expectations from the fanbase?

As a dutchie I mostly look at this move from a distance but I am certainly considering Slot a very good coach.

Been reading this sub for a while now and I notice people here being generally pretty nuanced in their critique and generally pretty supportive which is a clear difference I see with other fanbases in PL teams. That being said, I see a lot of "I never heard of him so he sucks" rhetoric on this sub, which I personally find a classic example of "proud ignorance" and hard to take it seriously seeing how chelsea and tottenham and some other "unnamed big teams" tried to get him before liverpool, so if all these heard of him and all wanted him I would argue that those that actually know their shit certainly had him on their radar for a while now and anyone who knows Slot's work can completely understand it. Those who never heard of him did not pay attention, this only showcases a lack of knowledge, not some special insight into Slot's capacity as coach.

From my POV its like this: Liverpool is by far the best team Slot could have hoped for, it suits him perfectly, whether or not Slot is also the best coach for Liverpool is something time will tell, but I'm optimistic based on what I know of him.

In the Dutch and English media there is a lot of comparison to van gaal en more recently ten hag, and even though I personally feel those comparisons are completely unjustified for a plethora of reasons, I do wonder what you, the LFC fans, would consider the "baseline" for a good first year?

Does anyone expect prices in the first year?

Does anyone consider "good football but less success" acceptable in the first year?

What would the CL campaign look like to consider it "acceptable" ?

At what point does it go from "failure" to "acceptable" to "succesful" ? where is the threshold?

How would LFC fans respond to eredivisie (or dutch players from other competitions like koopmeiners) getting bought but not performing as well as hoped? would they blame Slot for underperforming dutch/feyenoord/eredivisie players? (eventho it looks like slot won't get executive decisions on transfers but will get a say in it anyway)

To wear a coat of neutrality here: One thing I personally find rather annoying in the case of Ten Hag is how manunited fans seems to severely over-estimate the potential of their squad/club and call ten hag incompetent rather then accepting the entire club and squad is incompetent and probably performing at or above its expected level, and while he may not have worked miracles, I feel it overly harsh to pretend he is the problem. ( I do agree he made some mistakes and I hate hearing him speak, even more so in english, but I also feel he did a few pretty impressive things considering the circumstances so it kinda balances out into "ok'ish" for me)

I wonder if the LFC fanbase is more nuanced in this subject and has proven to be so in the past?

Paul Gorst Liverpool face Luis Diaz transfer decision after training ground whispers over exit

>There are even some around the AXA Training Centre who have openly discussed the prospect of losing Diaz this summer. While expectation of an imminent sale has never been explicitly detailed, it would be disingenuous to suggest Liverpool have not at least contemplated it and the football operations team will have a plan for such an eventuality.
