The Guardian - ‘Arne Slot loves to work with people … he opens the eyes of the players’

(Another) really nice write-up on Slot.

>In the 82nd minute, the entire ground sung his father’s name and, just as Slot lifted his hands above his head to return their applause, Santiago Giménez scored the final goal in a 5-0 win. When the final whistle blew, and Slot walked towards the fans to bid farewell, the PA eschewed the ear-splitting techno that had soundtracked the rest of the night and played You’ll Never Walk Alone. Football rarely permits moments of such infinite perfection.

No team has ever completed the Premier League double over Klopp’s Liverpool team during his entire tenure here.

I remember seeing this stat last year, and since the only team we lost to in the first half of the season was Spurs, this stat will finally hold true forever.

Take a bow, Jurgen. Not even Pep’s managed this. Wolves and United did the double over City the season we won the league. Brentford also beat City twice last year.

2015-16: Lost to West Ham 0-3 at home and Manchester United 3-1 away under Rodgers, who beat us in the return fixtures. Klopp lost 1-2 at home to Crystal Palace, but beat them 1-2 away.

2016-17: Lost 1-2 to Crystal Palace at home but won 2-4 away, lost 2-3 to Swansea at home but won 1-2 away.

2017-18: Invincible at Anfield.

2018-19: Invincible at Anfield. And away minus the Etihad.

2019-20: Invincible at Anfield.

2020-21: Lost at home to Brighton, Burnley, Chelsea, and Fulham 0-1, drew 1-1, won 0-3, won 0-2, and drew 1-1 respectively. Lost at home to Everton 0-2, drew 2-2 away. Lost at home to City 1-4, drew 1-1 away.

2021-22: Invincible at Anfield.

2022-23: Lost 1-2 at home to Leeds, won 1-6 away.

2023-24: Lost 0-1 at home to Crystal Palace, won 1-2 away.

Fabio Carvalho's loan at Hull City comes to an end as they fail to reach the playoffs. He scored 9 goals and assisted another 2 in 19 games.

Will be interesting to see what we do with him in the summer. Probably depends on what he does in preseason.

Tyler Morton also returns to Liverpool from Hull this summer.

changed. If Alisson scores a 30-yard bicycle kick maybe I'll move it up to 3rd, and if Klopp and Salah get into a literal fistfight on the pitch maybe I'll move it down to 5th. We didn't know this would be Klopp's last season until about halfway through, at which point the vibe of it got a lot more serious. Liverpool had a good run at the title, but the wheels simply fell off after getting knocked out of the FA Cup by Man U. The highlight was of course winning the League Cup, and I say getting that trophy is enough to make Klopp's farewell season a success, even if it wasn't as much of a success as we'd hoped.

3. 2021/2022

Premier League: 2nd place, 92 points, +68 GD

Champions League: Lost in Final to Real Madrid

FA Cup: Beat Chelsea in Final 🏆

League Cup: Beat Chelsea in Final 🏆

The team that will be best remembered for getting so close to winning an unprecedented quadruple, but instead having to settle for winning "only" two major trophies. This was the third and final team we had with Klopp that I would consider great. But ultimately what led to their downfall was the inability to beat other great teams (0 wins against other top 4 teams in the league, and a relatively easy run of games in the CL where they lost the first time they had to play someone of their caliber). Again, it was a great season, but that week at the end where we lost the league in brutal fashion, then lost the CL final 7 days later, was maybe the most miserable week of all time.

2. 2019/2020

Premier League: 1st place, 99 points, +52 GD 🏆

Champions League: Lost in Round of 16 to Atletico Madrid

FA Cup: Lost in Round 5 to Chelsea

League Cup: Lost in QF to Aston Villa

The team that finally ended the curse, not much more that needs to be said. Other competitions be damned, this season was all about hoisting the PL trophy for the first time in 30 years. This team was just pure dominance, the epitome of the "mentality monsters." It got to the point where they could go down a goal and my confidence in winning the game would not be shaken in the slightest. Not even a global pandemic could stop them, although admittedly they were not as good after the restart in June. But I'll take to my grave that if COVID hadn't happened they would've broken the points record, probably finishing with 103-106 points. In that world, they might have to be number 1 on this list, but sadly that's not the world we live in.

1. 2018/2019

Premier League: 2nd place, 97 points, +67 GD

Champions League: Beat Tottenham in Final 🏆

FA Cup: Lost in Round 3 to Wolverhampton

League Cup: Lost in Round 3 to Chelsea

You're really grasping at straws trying to choose between this team and 19/20, especially considering we had essentially the exact same players. What puts this team over the top in my eyes is that they were elite in both the PL and CL, rather than just one. I mean, getting 97 points and not winning the league should be a violation of international law. Regardless, there are countless great memories from this season: Sturridge's banger against Chelsea, Firmino's hat trick against Arsenal, Pickford's gift to Origi in the Merseyside Derby, and of course the comeback against Barcelona and subsequent win in the CL final. I'm not sure I'll ever experience anything quite like that as a sports fan again in my life. This season was Klopp's vision fully realized, the one that turned us from doubters to believers and made us realize just how insanely blessed we were to have him as our manager.
