Was singing a German song to myself when suddenly confronted and accused of being a Nazi.
I was born in Belgium, and am fluent in Dutch, German, Spanish & English. I currently live in Southern California with my American fiance.
Whilst walking my dog I was singing along to one of my favourite OK Kid songs, "Unterwasserliebe"--when I was confronted by a group of women sitting outside in their front garden.
One of them immediately shouted at me to take out my headphones; thinking something was wrong or perhaps they needed help with Christmas decorations I cooperated. Immediately I was bombarded with angry yelling saying, "WHAT ARE YOU SAYING, WHAT ARE YOU, SOME KIND OF NAZI SPEAKING THAT LANGUAGE!? DON'T YOU KNOW HOW MANY JEWISH PEOPLE LIVE IN THIS NEIGHBOURHOOD!?"
I was dumbfounded because I've never experienced this type of behaviour before. So I just replied," It's a normal song miss, there's nothing even remotely mentioning Nazism or Anti-Semitic."
Another woman out of the group said, "You should probably get out of here before you piss off someone you shouldn't."
Me being a sound individual wanted to explain to these women that, just because I am speaking German, doesn't mean--I am a Nazi. I then realized there's no point because; if these people have a problem with the language--there's no way I can convince them it's a nice alternative band from the mid 2010s, and in fact, the song is about the struggle of people trying to move on from trauma...with a catchy beat of course.
