Why are we letting Akhenouch and his wife mess with Morocco’s shopping scene?
I don’t know about you, but buying from Amazon, AliExpress, Temu, Shein — you name it — has gotten way harder in Morocco. A few years ago, you could just click and order whatever you wanted, but now it feels like the government has thrown up roadblocks on anything coming from outside the country. And I’m convinced this all started after Akhenouch and his wife took control.
It’s like they’re running Morocco like it’s their own business — making moves that benefit them and their companies while making life harder for us. The new rules seem designed to force us to shop locally, but honestly, what are we getting in return? Local stores are stuck in the past. The products here are outdated, overpriced, and frankly, just not what we need.
# What’s Going On?
1. Shipping Problems & Sky-High Costs: If you’ve tried to order something from abroad recently, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Shipping costs are up by 30%, customs fees are ridiculous, and the wait times are unbearable. Something that used to take a week now takes a month — if it even arrives. The added costs on top of all that just make it not worth it anymore.
2. Local Shops Aren’t Cutting It: Yeah, in theory, it sounds good to support Moroccan businesses, but let’s be real — the local market is lagging. Fashion here feels stuck in the ‘90s, and electronics are so behind that it feels like we’re living in a different decade. If you’re into gadgets or keeping up with trends, the local stores aren’t even close to offering what’s out there globally. For example, when it comes to electronics, brands like Samsung or Apple are selling older models, while we could easily get the latest ones for half the price online. Fashion stores are filled with old collections, while trendy clothes from Shein, which are way cheaper and more fashionable, are being blocked or delayed due to the import restrictions.
3. Akhenouch and His Wife’s Profit Plan: Let’s get into the real issue. Akhenouch's wife, Aswat, has stakes in a variety of retail businesses that stand to benefit massively from these restrictions. Companies like Aswat Mobilité, which deals with tech and electronics distribution, and Al Mada, one of the largest investment groups in Morocco, are directly benefitting from these policies. By blocking access to foreign products, they are creating a monopoly where we are forced to pay inflated prices for outdated or low-quality goods from local stores that are often tied to Akhenouch’s family. For example, the massive price markups on local electronics like those in the Marjane Group or Carrefour Morocco — are clearly benefiting from fewer options available to Moroccan consumers. These stores are marking up items like smartphones, home appliances, and computers by as much as 40-50% compared to what you’d pay for the same product online, and the selection is often limited to outdated models.
# Why This is a Big Problem:
So, here’s the deal we’re getting stuck with limited choices, overpriced goods, and a lack of access to global markets. And don’t even get me started on the economic side of things. Stats from the Haut Commissariat au Plan show consumer spending is dropping, but inflation is up. Why? Because we’re stuck paying more for worse stuff. It’s a losing game for regular people.
The most frustrating part is how it’s all being masked as "protecting local businesses." But in reality, it’s just about lining the pockets of a few powerful people and businesses. The reality is, Akhenouch’s policies are protecting the profits of his own family’s businesses, like Aswat, Al Mada, and Marjane Group, by forcing consumers to buy overpriced, outdated products instead of having access to cheaper, more modern ones from abroad.

Imagine a Morocco where we wait in line...Why does that feel impossible?
I've been thinking a lot lately about how certain values shape societies differently. In Japan people are known for their discipline waiting patiently in lines, respecting each other’s space even leaving things out without worrying about them getting stolen. Now I am not saying Japan is perfect but I find myself wondering why can't we as moroccans take inspiration from those values?
What’s stopping us from embracing and rewarding good behavior in the same way? Why does the idea of waiting in line or respecting public spaces feel so far out of reach here?

We finally found out if Hookah is legal in Morocco.
To answer this question, I need to give a bit of background:
A buddy and I were in Morocco until last week, where we did a road trip through the entire north. We had high expectations in a country like Morocco, which for me is one of the countries where you can get good hookah. As hookah fans, we naturally wanted to test if it was any good there and went to a hookah bar in Tangier, where we tried a mediocre and not exactly cheap hookah.
We didn't think much of it until we wanted to spend a cozy evening in Rabat, the diplomatic capital. That's when the doubts started, as it was simply not possible for us to find many places that fit the bill. There was a hookah bar, but it was in a hotel and therefore harder to reach. Although we had many doubts, I came up with the theory that hookah bars might be banned in Morocco. My travel companion thought I was crazy, and after a few discussions, we both tried to get to the bottom of it.
I searched the internet for answers, but people were just as divided there. My colleague, as extroverted as he is, started asking people on the street, who were unfortunately just as clueless. Some had no idea, others said it was illegal. A policeman on site assured us that it was legal.
After all the back and forth, we agreed that we had no idea and let the matter rest. That was until we arrived in Fès on one of the last days.
Since I smoke not only hookah but also vape, I spontaneously decided to go to a vape store. My colleague accompanied me, and after I had made my purchase, he asked the owner whether hookah bars were now banned in Morocco or not.
He was sure: Hookah bars are banned in Morocco. But there are hookah bars that are tolerated because they operate under the table.
To confirm this suspicion, we asked the nice receptionist at our hotel again. He confirmed the suspicion and then revealed that apparently, since 2020, there has been no (legal) license to offer hookah in a public space.
Proud that I had finally won this discussion, I was sad not to be able to try many hookahs in Morocco. Since we only saw northern Morocco, I can't say what it's like in the rest of the country. Maybe someone else knows better. But one thing I can say:
If you want to smoke good hookah, I recommend asking the locals; they know best.

Honey moon in Morocco, how many Dirhams?
Hello everybody, I am going to Morroco for my Honey Moon for 12 days in November. I would like to know how much cash (Dirhams) is advisable to have in my wallet every day I will be in the streets, and also when I will be in Merzouga and Chefchaouen.
Finally, where and how can I get the best exchange rate to change dollars for Dirhams?
Thanks in advanced!!

Need some travel advice to Turkey please
Hello. I am planning to take my partner to turkey in this upcoming January. I saw a nice flight with a stopover in the UK for a night. She informed me that unless you have a direct flight booked, moroccan immigration will stop you at the airport and block you from leaving, is this true?

Immigrating from Morocco
Hi everyone, (asking for a friend who is based in Morocco 25M)
I'm civil engineer based in Morocco with three years of experience working at different engineering agencies. My goal is to immigrate to the U.S. to work with American companies, but I don’t currently have an employer willing to sponsor me.
I’ve heard about some potential visa options like the H-1B, TN, and O-1, but I’m not sure which would be most feasible given my situation. I'm also curious if there are pathways that might not require an employer sponsor or if there are specific fields in engineering where I can secure one
If anyone has experience or advice on navigating this process as an engineer or engineer tech, I’d love to hear from you.

I absolutely hate daylight saving !
For the best part of 6-7 years or so I have hated every single day of gmt+1 ... I'm always out of rhythm, time flies, no sense of day or night, and the horrible consequences that it does to the body. I truly wish that who's ever idea is it gets removed from his position and reverse this horrible idea.
