Hurrah to all self-taught!!!

I am amazed by all the self-taught videos on this sub. Keep it up!! Too often I can read despising comments about self-teaching piano. It is only about commercial protectionnism. Consider this: my current program is 50 minutes. I had a 2 hour consultation lesson for 35 min of my programme with a very good pianist in my area. 80 dollars/hour. Her reaction post lesson: normally I spend 3 hours/page/pupil. I made a calculation that it would potentially cost me 50 000 dollars to go through my program.... most primadonna like teachers behave as sect gurus and just want your money for a doubtful benefit. Don't let yourself fooled/discouraged, you are doing very well!

Online piano teachers: What's your teaching setup?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to improve my online piano teaching setup and would love to hear what experienced teachers are using.

Specifically, I'm curious about:

📷 Camera setup (single camera or multiple angles?)

🎤 Microphone for clear piano audio and voice

💻 Platform (Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, etc.)

🎹 Any software or apps that make lessons more interactive

💡 Lighting and positioning tips

If you teach online regularly, what setup has worked best for you? Is there anything you wish you'd bought sooner or something that turned out not to be worth the money?

Thanks in advance! I'd really appreciate any photos, recommendations, or lessons learned from your experience.

To those that can play through giant pieces like rach 2,3 here, are you majoring in piano or just a casual?

It very common to scroll through IG reel, or here reddit where people show that they can play those giant pieces like beethoven sonata ( those late periods henle 8-9), rach concertos or chopin etude, all close or at the concert tempo.

I've always wondered if you are actually studying piano to get a degree or are you non music student practising as a hobby.

Personally, I'm a chemical engineering student (22), able to play liszt sonata, etude, ravel concerto amd so on but i wouldn't consider it to be comparable to what othere put out there in social media

Getting my first teacher after self teaching for 3 years, what should I expect?

I've been playing self-taught for 3 years and, a long story short, my music teacher (under who I study Music 2 in the Australian HSC syllabus) has connected me with an incredible piano teacher who has experience with exceptionally difficult pieces. I have a performance coming up in roughly two months and she has looked at videos of me performing and suggested I learn Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G minor, Op. 23 No. 5, to which I agreed. I have my first lesson on Monday (2 days), and I'd love to know the experience of anyone who has been in my position and what to expect. Thanks everyone!

Self Learning Through RCM

Not a complete beginner, but my piano journey has had some long breaks so I feel like a fraud.

With some breaks in between and a long one until currently, I got to the beginning of Piano Adventures level 3B.

I’m reteaching myself up to that point, and I was considering using RCM as a way to characterize where I’m at skill wise. Also working my way through Junior Hanon and just Memorizing scales daily as my “minimum practice routine.”

I’ve been doing some music theory stuff on the side, specifically just working through music theory.net .
I’ll do a couple min of note recognition practicing with Flashcards , for ledger lines especially.

Absolutely no ear training up to this point. I don’t know if that’s weird, but yeah never got around to that.

Where does that leave me in terms of directions to go?

Edit 1: I just saw someone play an RCM1 piece and noticed them making their left hand softer than their right hand.

I just wasn’t exactly taught that skill, any pointers for that? I thought it was a higher level thing I guess, but the only thing I’ve done to try and build that skill was play scales 2 octaves with both hands while one isn’t pressing down on the notes and the other is.

With minimal exceptions, you cannot speed run learning piano

Teacher here with over 20 years experience with piano, guitar, composition.

I don't know if it is because of TikTok brain or people seeing a bunch of people on the internet say they are getting to advanced levels in under a year or what... but if you are a below average, average, or above average player, it will take you years to get competent at the piano. Yes, even above average players. And guess what? no matter how much you want to think you are going to be a prodigy or even above average, by mathematical definition, many students aren't.

Note, you may be considered "below average" not due to your innate abilities (or lack thereof), but because of factors outside your control (bad teacher, not taking lessons for financial/time reasons, other things getting in the way of consistent practice, etc).

Here's the good news, even a below average player who plays for many years can become a competent pianist.

For those just starting, you've no doubt seen friends, family, and strangers play the piano. Please note that despite how easy the piano "looks", it is a terrifyingly hard instrument to get good at (but a fantastic first instrument for many reasons). Whatever you think a pianist looks or sounds like, please know it will take you the better part of a decade to get there.

Again, you probably know many friends who inspire you to play the piano... and maybe they are "only in their 20s", but keep in mind MANY people take lessons from ages as young as 5 or 6. No matter how "bad" they are/how much ability they lack, anyone who is consistent with the piano (and with a teacher) can become a competent piano player.

By the way, speed running the RCM/ABRSM levels is not a good idea. I have studied how students learn and how we all absorb musical ability. It takes years for the brain to finally come to terms with playing the instrument. No doubt you've already observed this at a smaller level: you start practicing a piece, it takes you so much effort to only butcher it... and then one day you just wake up and... you are good at that piece? that same thing applies to learning piano as a whole. It's like growing in height. One day you can't reach the counter top, seemingly the next day you are double the height of the countertop.

yes, it is possibly to pass the first 3 - 5 levels of RCM in 1 year... but you won't nearly be as good as someone with years of experience playing RCM 6 pieces, for example.

it just creeps up on you. don't rush this experience. I promise in 5 - 10 years it will pay off. be patient, be kind to yourself. and stop comparing yourself to liars or prodigies on the internet.

Any piano teachers make a mistake playing a piece for their student?

Aside from personal disappointment, how much of a discredit does this do for a teacher. I’ve had teachers who made a mistake or admitted they didn’t practice the piece before our lesson. We’re all human.

I need a guide to teach myself how to play the piano

Hello! I recently bought a keyboard to start learning piano. As far as I can remember, I have always wanted to learn how to play the piano but wasn’t given the opportunity to.

Now I’m (26) trying to fulfil my lifelong dream! But due to financial reasons I wouldn’t be able to afford a piano teacher just yet, however, if it is once a month I might be able to in the near future.

I just want to hear from all self taught pianists here, how you started off and what you would do differently if you were to go back in time!
From all the threads I’ve read, it seems like Alfred’s Adult Piano course book is the best to start off at? ( correct me if I’m wrong)

Would love to hear everyone’s tips! Thank you :)

question about sight reading

when you are sight reading do you just see and play or should you say "D with a 5th" ?

i dont know how to internalise sight reading.

like if i can sight read silent should i do this, or should i pracitse saying the chord or intervall in my mind?

now that i think about it, when reading a book im not saying " word X comes next" im just reading?

and do you vocalise in your mind, or do you picture/imagine what comes next?

right now sight reading is easy enough that i can just look and play, but its more about long term when the music becomes more dense, and i should prepare for that and practise sight reading "correct"

or to clarify , i dont know what "system" i should practise, because its difficult to hold information in my head, so i think a reaction based system without "thinking" would be better and practise my strong points

or practise more my weakness with music theory and try to hold the notes as chord and intervalls in my head while playing.

sorry if this is confusing and rambled

thanks for answering!

Tips to be a better teacher?

I'm currently teaching my girlfriend piano. She has very basic music knowledge and is a piano beginner. I've bought Faber Adult Piano adventures and we are about 1/3 of the way through and progress has slowed.

I've played for a number of years but definitely not a fantastic player, and probably don't have the best technique.

Any words of advice or key things I should be focussing on to help her on her journey?

Piano teacher wants me to improvise. What should I keep in mind?

I’m a complete beginner I started last week as of today. I’ve gotten scales down somewhat and reading sheet music to an extent (I played trumpet when I was younger)

During my lesson today my teacher had me improvise going up the c major scale. During this she was playing a song on guitar so basically I was improvising off of her.

I have fun learning/trying new things but this felt a little stressful. I’m struggling to let loose playing and not reacting to mistakes. She told me until next week to try and listen to a backing track of autumn leaves in a minor and improvise off of that. As well as practice scales.

I showed an interest in jazz so that’s the direction my lessons are going in. But a lot of this feels really intimidating. I’m fine learning sheet music and playing any instrument from memory but coming up with my own thing I really struggle.

Can someone share their piano journey with me if they were self taught? What they regret doing, what they wish they would have done, etc?

I am thinking of having piano lessons maybe once every few weeks or months but I just don’t want to too often because my schedule changes very quickly.
I’ve played guitar for a while but am not sure what process would be best for piano? Learning scales? How do I start understanding/learning/applying sheet music? YouTube videos? Websites/books/other resources?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
