Power surge through cable modem coax?

Today was a long, interesting day. We had some storms roll through last night. I noticed I wasn't able to remote in, but there were no outages reported in the area. I gave it a few hours but it didn't come back up so I went into the office to see what's up.

Long story short, the cable modem was fried, the WAN port on our router was fried (but LAN port was fine), and the switch after the router was limping along but, after a reboot, never came back up. All of the devices were on UPSs.

All I can assume is we got some kind of surge through the cable modem coax. Is this common?

If so, is all i need is a inline coax surge protector? Is that someone is would put in or is it something that I should ask the ISP to put in?

Less secure Gmail apps on devices without OAuth

Hello everyone, I don't know if you have already talked about this topic, but how have you managed to continue using old applications/devices that no longer work because you disabled the less secure Gmail applications? And it doesn't work in Outlook either, did they create another email? Or does your domain allow SMTP messages?

RDS Server maintenance

Looking for some help on RDS server maintenance. We have 6 RD servers (+ A broker and Gateway). Looking for some advise using a script or any other method to disconnect the Idle disconnected sessions after a certain period of inactivity to keep resources available. Any other advice or suggestions highly apricated.

If a user logs back in when their session is in Idle disconnected state, will they get the same session?

Brave Browser in Enterprise?

While Chrome and Edge are the common sights in enterprise settings, the increasing emphasis on privacy and recent limitations on ad blocking are leading some to explore Brave in the public non enterprise space. What are your thoughts on Brave's viability for enterprise deployment? Assuming security measures are implemented - such as blocking Tor, managing extensions, and removing the Brave Wallet, etc etc.. could a standardized version of Brave find a place within organizations?

Boss wants to transition me from sysadmin to team lead

Bit about me, been sysadmin for 10years now, love the job, especially the troubleshooting and project work. Very heavy in the MS environment, from on prem to m365 and everything that it touches. I proud myself on always finding a solution to things.

Been with this company since October, a company of 500~ people, but rapidly expanding. (5-15 new hires a month, defense sector)
IT department is 3 in helpdesk and 4 in backend. I’m one of the 4 in backend, the other three is 1 network guy, 1 junior and 1 guy that is similar to me, but less knowledgeable.
The job is perfect in many ways, company has just started insourcing a lot of their systems, so everything has to be built up from scratch and there’s a ton of tasks to do.
When I joined I jumped in with both feet and was up and running in no time. Taking ownership of projects, getting them completed and moving on to new things. Have been getting praise from manager and team mates since the second week, especially about my speed.

Last month manager talked to me on our 1-1 and mentions that he would like to try me out as a team lead in the future when our it department expands, which leads me to my question.

I have never really seen myself as a manager or leader of any kind. Always just saw myself as a technician that got shit done and that was it. But the more I have thought about it, the more I kinda want to try it out.

My worries though are mainly the possible dynamic in the existing team. Especially the guy that does similar work to me, he has been with the company for 4 years and is 15 years older than me, I fear that the good dynamic we have now would go away, especially if I as the new guy come in and take a position that he might have wanted himself.

Anyone have any advice on similar situation? Also advice on how I can prepare myself the best? Tips and tricks etc.

Thanks and sorry for wall of text, thought it was important to add alittle background information.

Broadcom's Message to Partners

This is a summary of the message that's being delivered to partners, it's the obvious based on how smaller accounts have been treated, but this is the messaging we are receiving:

"As part of Broadcom’s evolving go-to-market strategy, we want to inform you of a significant shift in focus that impacts how we approach customer engagement and renewals.

Broadcom is prioritizing innovation and value-driven solutions, placing emphasis on selling new products and expanding existing deployments. This means the company will no longer focus on supporting or renewing basic, bare-minimum functionality.

Moving forward, Broadcom expects resellers and partners to take a solution-centric approach, looking at the entire product suite and ecosystem when engaging with customers—not just the baseline components.

What This Means for You:

* Upselling and cross-selling are key: Focus on driving value by introducing broader platform capabilities and additional modules.
* Minimalist renewals will not be prioritized: Renewals that only cover basic features without expansion or strategic alignment may not be supported.
* Customer success = full adoption: Encourage customers to explore the full potential of their Broadcom investments.

Broadcom is here to help you position these changes effectively with your customers and will be providing enablement resources to support your efforts.
Let’s work together to deliver maximum value and drive meaningful transformation through Broadcom’s solutions."

More or less it appears if you don't spend more then you did last year, you will not be prioritized for new quotes or renewals. We all already knew this is what they were doing, its just being said out right at this point. Be aware is all, so when your VAR can't get you a quote, you now know why.

Has HPE always been this pushy and ignorant?

I'm currently in the process of getting server quotes from HPE through our hardware vendor, and I don't recall ever having this much trouble in the past.

For the most part, rather than getting a server configured to what we need, we're getting recommendations from HPE to go with these prebuilt systems. For the most part, that's completely fine. As part of the replacements we're also going to upgrade our servers with regards to hardware. For instance, increasing the amount of RAM on each system, going from mechanical HDDs to SSDs for our web and enterprise servers, and going with a dual-CPU solution for the enterprise server. But we're running into complete headaches for the file server.

We run 15K RPM drives on our file server in RAID 1+0 config. Suddenly 15K RPM drives are no longer available as an option, and due to drive space constraints on the server chassis, the rep is basically trying to convince us to go with higher-capactiy SSDs instead. But the cost of these SSDs is insane. The line item for the drives alone was $22,000! The only other option would be to order 15K drives as "spare parts" which only have a one-year warranty on them and we still have yet to receive any clarification as to whether the HPE support we'd be purchasing would include replacements in the event of drive failures (For reference, the current support we have does cover drive failures, and the replacements are delivered within a 4-hour window).

When I discussed why we run the number of drives we do, the rep simply told me to change the RAID config so I would get more space with the SSDs. So we would sacrifice performance and fault tolerance for a couple extra TB of space? Then what's the point of the upgrade?

Are these prebuilt options the only way to order servers now? What happened to CTO options where the server would be built tailored to the customer's needs?

Sales dept all need local admin but it's just for one app.

Hi, in a Windows Active Directory environment, my entire Sales dept all have local administrator privileges just for one app. On sales calls they do need to demonstrate the full functionality of the software app that we sell to customers. This is the only reason they have it.

How can I 'upgrade' their standard user Active Directory accounts to include the correct permissions for this one app, without issuing an all-or-nothing secondary admin account to them?

They are not domain admins, but have a secondary AD account that has been added to the local administrators group on that specific workstation.

I have heard tell of customizing the folders or reg keys that the app needs, but I'm not sure how to do this.

UPDATE: To be more clear, Sales is demonstrating the initial installation and setup of the app, as if they were the end user's IT Dept. Local admin is not required to use the software after setup.

> The second picture is a picture of a childrens, childrens also come in a variety of colors and sizes, but they are all childrens, you can tell they are not midgets or dwarfs because of the lack of muscle tone and the vapid expressions yet to be crushed by harsh reality. You can tell they are not chickens because, if you kick them, they crumple to the ground, instead of flying away like a football. If you kick them enough in public other people will take them away from you. This is because childrens are not aerodynamic and people feel sorry for continued attempts to make things that are not chickens or footballs fly as if they were those things.

> The third picture is a picture of some dwarfs.

> The fifth pictures is a picture of some midgets.

Aliens either don't abduct chickens, or no one gives a shit when they do because everyone hates chickens, except when they're dead and fried in the bodily fat of peanuts.

This is also known as the Roswell incident and has allowed a number of otherwise un-fuckable nerds to get laid because alien fan girls aren't very smart. End user reporting old company is after them causing their IT issues

So, the past two weeks this newer employee whose been with us for 2 months is reporting her work laptop will shutdown randomly, become very slow out of no where and or type randomly.

The user said weird things like this is happening on her personal devices too which all started shortly after being let go buy their old job for speaking up about pay and questioning their PTO policies.

They believe their old employer which is a big name medical center in our area is after them since it all started after being let go.

Anyways after running scans on her laptop we found nothing suspicious. The device is up to date with more than enough available space and RAM. I've had 0 issues navigating the device while troubleshooting it. We wiped her profile on the device to see if a new one helps, because one thing that is true is that it takes around 5 minutes to reboot when she's logged in, but reboots normally when I'm logged in.

She's going to test it and let us know how it performs over the week, it's just this is a first for me. I have yet to come across an end user whose so sure that they're being targeted by their old employer that they went to the police and FBI so they say to report it.

What's the funniest ticket that's crossed your desk?

What's the one ticket, request, or end user that always makes you laugh? Could be anything from a really personable response, to a quirk of the system, to an impossible ask for rescheduling daylight savings time.

I'll start with a classic:
> Ticket with their party vendor is closed.

> Vendor's support email is CC'd on the thread.

> PSA sends resolution email

> Auto response from vendor support thanking you for updating the support request .

Got a Contract Offer for a State IT Role — Something Feels Off About the Vendor (Alrek / ABSLI)

Hey all — looking for some insight or reassurance here.

I recently went through the interview process for a W-2 contract position with the **State of New Hampshire** — an Active Directory Administrator role. The interview was legit: it was done over Microsoft Teams with several members of the state's DoIT team, and the invites came from real **nh.gov** addresses. The position itself is real and aligns perfectly with my background in IT and government systems.

The agency that submitted me and is handling onboarding is called **Alrek Business Solutions, Inc. (ABSLI)**, based out of Schaumburg, Illinois.

On paper, it’s all lining up — I got the offer letter, a start date, and official onboarding paperwork from the state itself (which I’ve been told to bring in on Day One).

But despite that, I’m having serious second thoughts. Here's why:

* The recruiter I’ve been dealing with goes by the name **“Kyle Smith”**, but he very clearly has an Indian accent. Later I found out from a public RFP that the actual listed company contacts are **Praveen Goud** and **Steven Smith** — not “Kyle.” This gave me the impression that “Kyle Smith” is an alias, which feels deceptive.
* Communication from the agency has been **super aggressive** — multiple calls, texts, and emails even after I’ve responded. They’re extremely pushy about getting paperwork signed.
* The **contract terms are questionable**:
* There's a clause saying they can **withhold your final paycheck** if you don’t give two weeks’ notice.
* Wanted to pay me once a month until I said no way, now they agree to change it...
* I voiced my concerns to **CAI**, the vendor manager that works with the State of NH, and instead of addressing them directly, they just looped back to ABSLI and said I should work it out with them.
* I found a **Facebook group post tying Praveen Goud to “Backdoor Jobs”** and complaints about unprofessional behavior. The post has since been removed.
* Lastly, the acronym “ABSLI” is **identical to a major Indian insurance company** (Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance), which has its own issues with job scams and impersonators online. This makes doing research very messy and misleading.

So now I’m in this weird situation:

* The job is real.
* The interview was real.
* But the **agency I’d be employed through feels shady**, and I haven’t signed anything yet.

Has anyone here worked with **Alrek Business Solutions, Inc.** (ABSLI)?
Is it normal for recruiters to use aliases like this?
Would you proceed — or walk away and trust your gut?

Really appreciate any feedback.

Does Prey Project still allow you to take a quick picture of the person using the stolen system?

I am looking through the control panel for it and noticed that the actions no longer allow you to take a picture of the person that is using the stolen system unlike they did in the past. Is this no longer an option?

If it isn't, do you have any recommendations on a software security app that will allow you to track the stolen system, geolocate it, and take a picture of the person that is using the stolen system? I live in a country where the police will not do much unless you can identify the person that is using the stolen equipment.

New Entra "Leaked Credentials" - no breach on HIBP etc

Bit of a shot in the dark - I just got a half dozen alerts for accounts which have supposedly been found with valid credentials on the dark web. Here's the relevant detection type from learn.microsoft.com:

>This risk detection type indicates that the user's valid credentials leaked. When cybercriminals compromise valid passwords of legitimate users, they often share these gathered credentials. ... When the Microsoft leaked credentials service acquires user credentials from the dark web, paste sites, or other sources, they're checked against Microsoft Entra users' current valid credentials to find valid matches.

The six accounts don't really have that much in common - due to who they are, they're unlikely to be using common services apart from Entra, and even things like the HRIS which they would have in common don't use those credentials anyway.

There are no risky signins, no other risk detections, everyone is MFA, it's literally the only thing that's appeared today, raising the risk on these people from zero to high. There's no matches for any of these IDs on HIBP.

I suppose my question is - how likely is this to be MS screwing up? Have other people received a bunch of these today (sometime around 1:10pm UTC Sat 19th)? Apart from password resets, which are underway, any other thoughts on things to do?

Until finally, after a 4 way zoom meeting, vendor B says 'Oopsie, my bad. Try it now' (he'd forgotten to add us to a firewall whitelist).

How to properly handle Microsoft Support

In a past life, I worked in the Microsoft field org. Saw lots of funny customer interactions. This one takes the cake and I've had it saved for years. Figured you guys will enjoy this.

For context, this is an email from a customer to a Microsoft TAM after an extremely long back/forth troubleshooting an old issue with Windows CSVs. I'm not including the entire thread, just know the customer is in the right and the TAM was an idiot (shocking, I know). The email mentions attached pictures which I'm not including here, but if you guys care enough, I can clean the metadata and upload somewhere I guess.

Oh, and I was not involved in this project/customer. The email was forwarded around to maaaany people internally because, well....

For any MSFT employees here, this was all logged in MSSolve. Feel free to look it up yourself. Part of me thinks there's no fucking way that tool still exists after all these years, but hell if I know.

> Hi <Microsoft TAM>!

> Probably. We had a time drift issue with our DCs which broke a number of critical relying party trusts and pretty much killed this week's other activities.

> I'll get back to you on Monday, with the caveat that I still think you're incorrect. For the record I'm talking about event ID 1: VDS Basic Provider, not event ID 5120. Fucked if I know how many different circumstances can throw event ID 5120, but seems kind of odd that a bunch of different circumstances can all produce event ID 1, which includes error code 48F@01000003, which is what I searched to get that article, which consists of a bunch of people all experiencing an issue that sounds pretty much exactly like the issue I'm experiencing, all on different hardware with the only commonality being using windows CSVs for back end storage.

> But you're saying its something random in my environment. Now. I get that correlation isn't causation, but if you've got a high level of correlation on one hand, and no evidence to the contrary on the other hand, you look at the correlated events to prove/disprove causation before you try to identify another theory.

> Now since you disagreed with me, and since I'm a dick, I'll put this into simpler terms. Suppose you are tasked with identifying a chicken. A bunch of other people agree that a chicken has feathers, isn't very bright and likes to chase small children around until you punt its stupid chicken ass like a damn football. Then, you go to a farm, and you see this thing with feathers, a little tiny head (probably means a small brain unless maybe you think birds have started storing their brains in their stomachs for variety) and its chasing around small humans which, given the weight of the probability could be kids or could be midgets, or maybe they're magical dwarfs visiting from a Tolkienesque fantasy land. Now, under those circumstances a reasonable operating hypothesis based on the available evidence would be that you're looking at a dickhead chicken. But you're telling me that isn't a chicken and, until proven otherwise, we should assume that little feathery blighter is a cow, or maybe a horse, because, I guess, the other people who described chickens lived on other farms where chickens might somehow be different.

> In short, you're telling me that we should ignore what little evidence is available from other users of your product, and that's whats available to me, now, I know that Microsoft is such a fuckfest that it manages to have jokes specifically made up about its support department involving uselessness and air balloons, but I have trouble believing that they don't give you access to past case histories for troubleshooting purposes. Okay, actually, I don't have trouble believing that they'd be retarded enough to handicap their support staff. That said, search the error code I reference above in Microsoft's past case histories. If it doesn't involve a bunch of people with CSV problems then I'll consider your point. If, on the other hand, a fair number of people with that error code have CSV pause issues, then maybe we

I am BUSY with meetings and project work ALL DAY. Currently I am just leaving the emails and teams chats to sit for a while before I respond... Sometimes I will remind them to open a ticket but the next time, they reach out to me directly again.

I want to Delete my Teams/Outlook account and only be available through the ticket queue.

How do you handle this bullshit?

my manager asked if we coordinate a time to meet outside of work over Signal.

had my one on one with my manager today. he asked me if we could meet outside of work and if i could add him on Signal to sort out the details.

im meeting him in 2 1/2 hours. gg's i guess lol. i might be cooked...

more context if you're interested:

I was supposed to get a promotion. but the parent company put a pause on all salary adjustments.

I've been here almost 2 years and have not gotten a raise the entire time so the promised promotion was something I was looking forward to and have worked hard for.

i did get a glowing annual review last month so idk... im afraid they might be looking into lay offs or restructuring.

Exhusted - Overwhelmed and about to give up.

I’m in my early 30s and been working in IT for 10 years now and I’m starting to lose it. Last two years have been exhausting and almost to the point of giving up. Having two children and all the responsibilities have been overwhelming and I feel like drowning each day. Anyone else gone through anything similar? Would be nice to know your experience.

Former workplace threw away a bunch of hard drives in the normal trash. What are the realistic implications?

I worked at a place that had a tech recycling program, but the fees were by weight, and management told us to take out all the drives and set them aside for a different recycling and shredding. Great, right? Well, I found out years later that the CTO just tossed them in the ordinary office trash. These drives were from:

Desktops. I am sure they were unencrypted because they would have been Windows XP drives
Servers. Some were part of a RAID, some were just straight unencrypted root or data drives.
SAN. We had a lot of drives go bad over the years, and while we had a refurbishment deal, sometimes the company (HP) said to just "toss them" and sent us a new one on the honor system.
External USB/Firewire drives. For a while, 10gb drives were "not enough anymore," so they bought a bunch of external drives until desktop upgrades were complete. They were in plastic cases, IIRC.

Most of these were unencrypted NTFS, FAT32, and ext3.

When I found this out, I wondered what the realistic implications were if someone goes dumpster diving and recovers these drives? The data would have been company-related, possibly with customer data, and perhaps even personally related. I know this is bad in every textbook example, but have there been people who have had security problems actually documented because someone grabbed a hard drive from the trash? I guess I am looking for "probability versus reality" metrics here.

The company is still operational, AFAIK. "PCI compliant," too. What a joke.
