Transitioning into an anonymous/private identity
I discovered the YouTube channel a few days ago and I have been devouring the content. I am planning a transition to a more anonymous and private online Identity and there are a lot of great tutorials on the channel already.
However, I am scratching my head at what I should do to *migrate* my identity. I am gonna try to explain myself better with a few examples.
* There are some companies offering to take charge to send legal requests to most websites to delete your personal data. Are they a scam? Is this a good first step prior to *transitioning*?
* After creating new emails, phone numbers etc, should I link them apps that identify me? (banking, state electronic ID, etc) or should I leave the old ones for those?
* Is it possible to keep using old social media accounts or would it be best to create fresh ones?
* In many videos THO explains that once a sim links you phone's IMEI with you cellular provider the phone is to be considered compromised. Is the only safe option to use public wifi? Would it be possible to use a personal mobile hotspot? There are some tutorial explaining how to spoof your IMEI, are they legit?
* Is buying a used phone a valid alternative?
I understand that most of the questions seem stupid but most other resources online seem untrustworthy. If these questions have already been answered or are irrelevant delete the post

Effective Altruism and Businesses
Inspired by the video on Kurzgesagt and Bill Gates, I researched a bit into the background of "effective altruism charities", i found a few points of criticism and would love to hear everyone's take on them:
Effective altruism (EA) frames global health as the key ways to "do the most good". Givewell, the most frequently recommended EA charity mostly gives to health-related charities. There are a few problems with this:
- they use number of lives saved as their main metric to judge charities, but not all charities focus on saving lives. It is unclear why preventing 1 fatality from a disease necessary outweighs making life a lot for many people, using the same amount of money. There is no detailed reasoning for this decision. This biases towards charities that provide medical support / equipments compared to educational / developmental charities
- IMPORTANTLY, a lot of their recommended charities have clear business interests, here are some examples:
Against Malaria Fund: is a charity partly funded by anti-malaria net companies to distribute anti-malaria nets in some African countries
GiveDirectly: is partly funded by Google and gives direct cash transfers by mobile money. If the beneficiaries do not own a phone, the charity uses part of the direct transfer to buy them a phone
"Safe AI" charities: i don't have a particular example, but i suspect they might serve to direct funding to AI researches
The problem:
I do not have a problem with corporations / people making money within a charitable cause. People need to make money. Also I do think that most of these charity do make a positive change to the world in the end.
I also do not think that health-related charities are necessarily bad / ineffective. They might well in fact be the most effective, but the way EA portrays these charities and "proves" that they are best with dubious research is problematic.
I have a problem with:
- deception: framing certain charities as "objectively better" while using research that could be biased maliciously to benefit businesses. This is deceptive to donors and harmful to other charities.
- lack of competition: collusion between non-profits and businesses make it such that there isn't always competition among businesses (eg among malaria net makers) this can also stifle innovation
- instrumentalising people: most people work in these charities because they genuinely believe they are doing the maximum possible amount of good. They might feel disturbed if they know the full picture.
This has been bugging me for the past week. Would love to hear your thoughts on this, especially if anyone has extra sources on this / disagreeing opinions. Cheers!

Question about G Pixel and Graphene
Hello!
I'm looking to have a new phone and I am thinking about buying Google Pixel and installing Graphene on it. I have expirience with Linux, so I don't think it will be difficult following a some install tutorial (correct me if I'm wrong). I have two key questions:
1. Which model do you advise me to buy?
2. Are there any problems when using hotspot or does it work good like any other phone?

How to can you use a vpn without getting blocked?
I want to be able to use a vpn freely across the internet, including creating social media accounts without them being disabled. Is it possible to use a vpn to encrypt my traffic then run a dedicated proxy over it? If this was done, would the proxy be able to see your traffic? Some people suggest self hosting a vpn, so you can make sure logs dont get saved. Could someone dm me some services that are privacy friendly for setting up something like this.

"International Global Network" scam.
Hi, I'm pretty much new to the Reddit thing here (despite having a Reddit account for years lol). I don't know how you get new topics for a video idea, but here's something you could look into.
Recently, a lot of these "Model United Nations" ads keep popping up on my socials and websites I visit, and I've found out that most of them, if not all, are somehow related to this bigger organization called the "International Global Network" or IGN for short.
Their "Model UNs" often come off as giving the youth the experience of what it's like to bring real change bla bla bla, impact the world, etc, etc.
However, the only value you get out of it is literally paying to sit somewhere on a seat and roleplay a UN delegate for a "model" (or as I like to call it, fake) United Nations gathering.
They basically come off as charitable and crap, and of high regard, when really, they are just a bunch of people who know how to fake and market stuff to people younger than 20. Not even their English proficiency is intermediate, despite their whole application sheet requiring that you do for some of their organizations.
They hold both physical and online/virtual conferences which you need to pay for, and if it's physical you have to pay for your own travel costs. They say they'll train you accordingly but all you get is a bunch of pdf files and one zoom session on how things work, with no real guidance as stated on their websites.

I happened to attend a virtual event of theirs and it was at the same time great to experience, but afterward, you start to slowly realize what it all is as they then proceed to sell you some more events that are completely bogus and lead to nothing they promise (technically kinda like the actual United Nations, to be honest).
anyways, normally I would link the websites within the text but I'm way too tired as I'm writing this at 3:37 am right now, being fed up with their ads and emails even though I unsubscribed months ago.

How is it possible that I can send/receive calls/texts with airplane mode enabled, even using regular SMS/MMS mode?
I have been testing phones with Airplane mode enabled and I am shocked to learn that you can communicate via regular SMS even with airplane mode enabled.
I tested two phones, both had registered SIM cards, both had airplane mode enabled, both connected to wifi via my home network. I was able to send and receive calls and texts via regular SMS and wifi SMS.
I'm curious how this is possible, from a technical perspective. In this case, the SIM must be sending and receiving instructions to and from the wifi module (not the cellular radio). I always thought enabling airplane mode meant the SIM was deactivated and could not communicate, but evidently, it just disables the cellular radio, which means the SIM can still communicate to the wifi module.
I'm wondering, does the SIM card transmit the IMSI, IMEI and geolocation data through Wifi when calling/texting, even when airplane mode is enabled?

Opinions on copying data in veracrypt volumes.
https://youtu.be/qqboMMBOJRE&t=498
8:18 why not just copy the whole volume file and instead mount it and copy files in the volume? Can anyone give me a reason why this would be better. All i think of is (more so on windows) mounting the volume will expose the decrypted files increasing the attack surface. Copying the files / using explorer.exe will create more temp files / logs that might never get deleted.

Can I automatically sync important data between two accounts?
My definition of important data:
* Emails (I'm guessing some kind of automatic forwarding? But there has got to be a better way, right, that handles labels and things too?)
* Contacts
* Passwords
* Services using Google to sign in
* Google Drive files
I have two Google accounts, and would like to continuously sync said data between them. I want to keep one account on my devices, and have the data synced to the other on the cloud. Ideally, I would like to sync between services (say one Google account and one Microsoft account). **The crux is that I want a backup in the event Google shuts down my account for a stupid rule violation or something.**
Is there an existing way to do this? If you know how to do even any one of the items on my list, please let me know.
I'm down to write code if needed, but I want to explore my options first.
(both are free personal accounts, not workspace or Google One/Microsoft 365 or something)

Telehealth Sites Sharing Visitors' Info
I found this article stating that several prominent telehealth websites like Workit Health and Monument share their visitor data with advertisers like Meta and Twitter. A warning though, I was able to see the article once but now it wants a subscription.

I Think That THO's Video On Protests Is Too Complicated
Video I'm referring to: https://youtube.com/watch?v=vMJH-UJyENs
On the tech side, I think all you would need for a protest is Tor, Briar, Organic Maps, and your camera.
Anything else seems unnecessary and opens a bigger window for a mistake to take place.
So why bother with making an email and Signal account?
TL;DR: Simplicity is key

I believe, but cannot yet confirm, that I was doxxed following law enforcement putting spyware on my phone.
I'm based in the UK so this is the UK police we are talking about. I believe it was in 2018 and I was targeted by a harrasment campaign that I reported to the police. I think false stories and claims were spread about me and this may have escalated to police remotely tapping my phone for suspected illegal activities which in reality were not occuring.
I don't believe this survailance was conducted professionally and I believe my location and private data on the phone were being leaked to the public and harrassers. Evenually, in early 2022, my family and most people I knew were gossiping about my private internet habits and I know for a fact someone had leaked my identity and private browsing in the form of images or videos. There seem to have been several leaks shared in waves and it was a very difficult time for me (I attempted suicide on one ocassion and am still traumatised). Long story short most people I know see me as a pervert now and many others suspected me of being a peadophile based on false accusations and stories spread around. People were outside my house saying I should kill myself. So basically I was doxxed then I got cancelled. My job prospects and relationships are damaged irreversably and life will be hard in the future.
Thing is I have failed to find any signs of my personal information on the surface web despite the reach of my public humiliation being signifacant. I however do not use private messaging apps like Whatsapp or any of the others so I was wondering can a malicious post actually be spread and go viral through those apps? I have no access to whats in the chats or these messages. I really would have liked to find evidence of my doxxing and online humiliation and I'd hope I could take legal action or at least find closure.
Is what I recount something that is possible or are there other possible explainations for what happened? I believe I was the victim of an abuse of technology and survialance powers fuelled by an online hate mob.
EDIT: I came here because I am dissolusioned by r/privacy who seem to pour doubt on remote phone tapping even being likely and seemed to think state power could do no wrong.

Is 'branding' of The Hated One channel off-putting?
I have been told in both good and bad faith that the THO channel art, titles and thumbnails don't evoke the content is well researched and sourced. Do you think the design is hindering the effort?
My videos are aimed to present research in the most thorough and digestible manner possible. The sources routinely contain dozens of references to reputable news articles and scientific papers.
Do you think I should change the art (i.e. the hooded figure, thumbnails, titles, etc.)?

Is there any additional security risk by installing microg as a normal app, to get certain other apps to work with checks?
Clearly it will have no extra privileges, and it's only microg, not adding the 3 google components, 'sandboxed' whatever that means, as every app seems to get access regardless.

Arkenfox vs Chromium?
I’m stuck in an indecisive loop and need some pointers:
I know that ArkenFox is making strides in terms of the privacy and security aspects of it, but after seeing different blogs comparing the security aspect of it (including the GrapheneOS’ own web browsing page), I’m having a hard time to choose.
My question to y’all: would you go for Arkenfox? Chromium Based browser? If so/if not, why?
Thank you!

cross tracking in browser isolation profiles
Hi,
so by now, i assume, i have a pretty solid browser isolation. in Librewolf i use separate profiles for shopping, for business, for social accounts, for facebook and another one for leisure surfing. Then there are Bravce profiles: one for streaming Netflix, another one for Bandcamp and other stream stuff and even a last one for occasional Google stuff. now everyone says, you shouldnt "cross use" those isolations. BUT, f.e. my Librewolf shopping profile wasnt there in the beginning. before i had this profile i used my leisure surf profile to buy stuff. what exactly is the "danger" of now using the shop profile, before i used that stuff in my leisure profile?
thanks for the answers!...
