New Lenovo driver referencing X1 carbon gen 9

Got an email from Lenovo that there is a new Driver for my ThinkPad, and saw that the release notes refers to not yet released X1 carbon/yoga. I guess a release is imminent. Just wanted to share.

Possible to upgrade the camera on a X230?

Is it possible to upgrade the camera on the Thinkpad X230 by replacing the old one and of course in a way so the lid can still be closed? :)

Might be the drivers also in Ubuntu 20.04 that doesn't make it so great but it's fairly old too. I'd like the upgraded camera to be GNU/Linux compatible too :P

My first-week impressions of the E14 Gen 2 AMD Ryzen 7

I've been reading this sub a lot lately in prep for buying my first non-Mac laptop (and first laptop since 2012). I settled on the E14 Gen 2 Ryzen 7, and wanted to jot down some impressions in case anyone else was considering the purchase. I found there isn't that much written on it, since it's relatively new, and most people here are (justifiably, perhaps) T-series snobs.

The first thing I'd like to address: build quality. A lot of people here will say the biggest difference between the E and T series is the build quality, since the Es are cased in plastic around the keyboard. Lemme just say: this is the strongest plastic I've ever felt. It's barely flexible at all, feels incredibly sturdy and doesn't indent at odd places the way cheaper plastic laptops do.

The keyboard, as everyone says, is indeed fantastic. I actually enjoy typing on it.

The fingerprint sensor has so far been flawless and quick, and I appreciate the sliding privacy lock on the webcam.

The main reason to get this laptop isn't the build quality or perks, IMO, but the speed and performance. The Ryzen 7 is incredibly fast. The other day I downloaded several applications, was editing audio in Audacity and had Photoshop open for some light resizing while five or so tabs were open in Chrome—bouncing between all these tasks I found no slowdown at all.

One thing I don't see mentioned often enough is the dual heat pipes. One reason I was wary of, say, the T14s was because I heard it gets quite hot. That's not the case with this, for sure. When processes get heavy, the fan sounds like a gentle breeze in the wind. It's almost a soothing sound. Barely any heat or noise.

My only gripes are common ones you'll read on every review. Fingerprints show up instantly. The webcam video quality is trash. The 250-nit screen is, at best, just fine. (When unplugged, under the default setting, the max screen brightness decreases significantly, which is annoying, though I'm told this can be changed.) The battery life doesn't seem like anything special, but I mostly leave mine plugged in. I don't mind these sacrifices too much, since I'm more concerned with performance and will likely buy an external monitor this year.

Also—I'm not sure why this happened, maybe someone can tell me—at one point, after two days, the screen went black mid-work for about two seconds before coming back on, as if it had gone to sleep. No applications closed, no work was lost, but I was troubled by it given how new the laptop is. Red flag or just something that happens sometimes?

Anyway, I just wanted to add my impressions to the collective hive mind, since I've seen a few other people pondering whether the E series is worthwhile. It's only been a week, so maybe too early to tell, but I hope this helps provide some context for prospective buyers.

GTA V on T14 AMD, at 35 degrees C, better performance, highest brightness, and Steam HD graphics ON as well. It performed superior & smooth, with a very decent graphics. A full charge 100%, I got 6 hours game, which feels great and enough when on a high display. In love with this machine & AMD.

Went to the darkside and I paid the price

For the last few years i've had an X1Y3, before that a p50s, and before that a T420. Sprinkle a couple work thinkpads in there and I've had plenty, but I went to the dark side recently.

On black friday I decided to pick up an XPS 15. After a few weeks it came and I really liked it. It feels really high quality. The metal construction is done very well and tbh feels better than any thinkpad i've owned. Screen is awesome and the tiny bezels are really nice. After a couple weeks of ownership the quality issues started to surface though. First it clicks the trackpad when you pick it up by the front corners. Now it's saying no battery detected when its plugged in and even when it's running on battery. It often thinks it's charging when its running on battery too, and sometimes thinks its on battery when plugged in. All of this messes with the performance modes either draining the battery quickly or throttling wayyyy down when plugged in.

I had a tech scheduled to come fix the trackpad, but when the power issues came up I decided to just return it, so after 28 days with it, inside the 30 day return window, it's going back. I don't want to have someone come fix this, and have something else go bad when it's out of the return window and be stuck with it.

Now I guess I gotta look out for sales to maybe get an X1E

Thinkpad X270

So! Just got my X270 and I got the confused as hell about the SSD compatibility on the WWAN slot, some say NVME doesn't work. Other people say the BIOS won't recognize so you can't boot from it or install an OS.

For some reason, I got lucky and got 2 ssd 2242, one chinese sata 512gb and the other one SN520 128gb NVME for real cheap.

Both ot them works like a charm, but there is a catch.

The BIOS won't recognize the 2242 NVME, so you can't boot from it outright. You'll have to install something bootable on it, so the BIOS will end up recognize the boot entry (but won't recognize the SSD entry).

So basically, both of them works. Dunno if the speed is limited, the SN520 speed when I tested was something like 1550/1100 r/W. So I guess its normal and way better than the sata limitation.

About the Thinkpad, I had a T480 but had to sell because I bought a PC for cheap and after the covid well, I wasn't really getting out of my house. So I took advantage on that and sold it on real good price and got the X270 for less than half the price, or half the price if I consider all the upgrades made.

Differences between X270-T480

X270 has a REALLY better battery life, at least double the T480.

X270 for some reason looks and feel more durable than the T480.

T480 had the touchscreen IPS panel, which looked great. X270 has one of the worst screen I've ever seen.

X270 seems to run a damn lot cooler than the T480.

T480 is a lot faster than the X270, but not for small things just for compiling, video editing, encode etc.

The keyboard on the X270 KILLS the T480 keyboard, dunno why. Maybe I like the form factor.

Like all tech bought on Brazil it came with the worst TN screen it could, so I'm thinking about getting a IPS one, altough it would completely defeat the whole purpose of getting something cheap.

Upgrades:

256 Adata SSD

128gb SN520 NVME 2242 SSD

16gb of ram 2666

Right now it's running popOS on the nvme drive, as soon as I have time I'll try to hackintosh it. Didn't find no EFI folders for it tho, so gotta take sometime to read the Dortania guide and do it manually.

Anyone with a T440P with upgraded CPU i7, 47xxMQ 4 core?

I'm trying to determine how much a difference it would make if I upgraded to the i7-47XX MQ. If you have one, with 16 GB of memory, can you download and run their benchmark. I've upgraded to SSD, maxed out the RAM to 16 GB, and IPS display. The i7-47XX MQ CPU is the most expensive upgrade yet, at $125-$200. So, I'm trying to decide is it worthwhile for me to further upgrade my two T440P, or put the money towards a M1 Mac Mini.

I looked, and was surprised they only had one entry for the i7.

Which ThinkPad for the best battery life

Hey everyone,

Happy New Year! Hope you're all doing well.

I used to be a software engineer, but now I'm back in grad school for my MSc. I've tried both ThinkPads and MacBooks before, but I lean towards ThinkPads.

Looking to grab a new laptop, but it seems like they all struggle with battery life. Currently on a T14 Gen 3 with AMD, and I'm barely getting 2 hours unplugged. I get it – the CPU can be a beast.

A friend warned me against the P series.
Any thoughts or advice from you awesome folks would be much appreciated.

Cheers in advance

Managed to talk them down to $750, and switch from USPS to another carrier. I've been sort of dreaming of getting one of these for a few weeks now. Finally found one that has the second screen, digitizer and the FX 3700M. Sadly only has a Q9000 instead of an extreme processor, but I'm not sure if upgrading would make a difference? Sure would be cool to say that it has an extreme edition. No idea if the price is worth it or not.

Either way, I hope it doesn't get damaged in shipping. USPS already did me dirty one time.

Thinkpad X1 Carbon (4th Gen) - should I buy secondhand

I am drawn to Thinkpads since my early IT corporate life, where I supported these wonderful machines. I even have a T41 1GB that I have played around with for ages. But it is just too slow or outdated to fully enjoy these days, compared to my desktop experience. I did manage to install Win 7 Ultimate, but it really crawled to do anything, so I reverted to Win XP and it is fine for that, so long as I do not try to do any youtube, which is a part of my retired life.

So I have seen a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (4th Gen) 1080p for around NZ$700 and am seriously considering purchasing and it has an option to upgrade from 8 GB to 16 GB. It will also come with a 90 day warranty.

I looked at new ones, but at around NZ$3,000, they seem over-priced for my needs. I can use it as a hobby PC, experiment with Linux versions, etc. It does not need to do gaming as I have a decent desktop and multi-screen setup for that.

My wife says I should get a really good laptop and also do gaming on it, but after a spending a minimum of NZ$2,000, I'd get one that is only as good as my current desktop, which is a better setup for gaming anyway, with 32" 1440p and 26" 1200p screens.

So options

1. Get the X1 4th gen secondhand to replace my T41
2. Get the gaming laptop and have compromised gaming experience
3. Save my money for a decent desktop upgrade in the future
4. Just use my iPad for portable content consumption

Help me decide. Is the X1 carbon as durable as my old T41 and it does not matter if it is secondhand?
