College Laptop Consideration
Going to college in the fall for CS and looking to pick up a new laptop.
My requirements are:
- Good Linux compatibility
- No issues with sleep/hibernation
- at least 2x ssd/m.2 slots (dual boot)
- 60 FPS (Rocket League, OW)
- Budget ~$1600
- Portable
- Good I/O USB/Headphone/Type C
Im considering purchasing the Lenovo p16v Gen 1 AMD with:
- AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO 7840HS
- NVIDIA RTX™ A1000
- 16" WQUXGA (3840 x 2400), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, HDR 400, 100%DCI-P3, 800 nits, 60Hz
Can anyone report their experience with running Linux on this Laptop?

Integrated smartcard reader pinout for Yoga 260/370/X380/X390 X395 X13 P1 Gen 1 X1 Extreme Gen 1-2
Hi,
So I'm looking for new mods to do on my Yoga X378 and someone pointed out something could be done to use the space left by not having a smartcard reader.
I've done a bit of research and found that the Yoga 260/370/X380/X390, X395, X13, P1 gen 1, X1 Extreme gen 1 & 2 all share the exact same smartcard reader.
Is anybody on this sub which happen to own one of these models equipped with a smartcard reader can tell me how it is seen by the OS (Windows/Linux) ? Is it seen as a USB device, PCI device, or something else entirely ?
If you have any extra information about its pinout, please share it. I haven't found anything online yet (just people trying to actually use it).

P1 Gen 6
I’m looking for experience and advice on P1 Gen 6 model specifically. I’m coming from MacBook Pro’s almost exclusively in my personal life. The Apple Silicon is a no go, since it prevents me from virtualizing a bunch of Linux distros and Windows x64, so I’m looking for the best replacement in terms of build quality and hardware, and centered layout keyboard - I just can’t with the off-set keyboards - I know others are the exact opposite - really wish this was an option on more models.
For those of you who have experience with the P1 Gen 6 what’s your take on this machine?
- What do you love / dislike?
- Would you buy it again or go a different direction?
- How’s the battery life and fan noise?
- Anyone move away from OLED back to Higher Resolution IPS with 165Hz 500 nits brightness?
- Any one else coming from MacBook Pro?

Another which thinkpad should I get for uni
I’m debating between 3 computers.
The p14s g3 i7 1260p 512GBssd
The p15v g3 ryzen 7 (either the rtx or Quadro)
Or the legion y500 ryzen 7
This machine is intended purely for coding microcontrollers and some other c based languages like matlab, ms office (sadly including one note and teams), email and streaming movies from time to time. I have a desktop for gaming. I’m living further away from my university so want something I can get work done on at uni especially between lectures.
Which one would you pick or is there one that is better?
Also what is the keyboard like on them? My last laptop was a dell and the best way to describe the keyboard was it gave me the ick.

What now ?
Hi,
I'm a bit undecided about what to do to make my daily driver ThinkPad less boring.
My daily driver is a Yoga X378 (a Yoga 370 with a X380 motherboard). I already invested quite a bit recently into a motherboard. It's a silver unit, quite like the looks, especially how the worn corners look because I trash it in my backpack constantly. Performance is sufficient for everyday tasks, especially since I can just plug my eGPU when I want to game a bit (mostly Minecraft and other older games). I very rarely use the touchscreen and the stylus, even less (I wanted to use it as a graphic tablet but I ended up using it much less than I would have wanted because I don't have much spare time).
I'm eyeing more recent ThinkPads but I can't justify buying one, as my current one is still working perfectly fine (and even better since I replaced the motherboard). I'm also not very keen on buying a brand new unit because I then wouldn't want to scratch it...
I don't know why but I find it boring for the past few months... Maybe I got tired of it ? How do you get tired of a ThinkPad ?
Any other mods to make it stand out ? I just love to customize stuff. Maybe worn the paint even more ? Wrap it in some unexpected color ?
Yes, it has an anti-glare screen protector. Life saver if you ask me.
I just put random stickers depending on my mood and remove them when I get bored.
Someone \(not me, it's true\) really thought that port was Type-C...
Gotta like worn corners. And btw, the lid is warped too.

Thinkpad T480s display problem
Yesterday, I recklessly tried out a new LCD for my Thinkpad T480s by using the edp cable from my old Thinkpad t490, which I thought might be suitable since the number of pins going to the mainboard were the same and matched. But as soon as the laptop is turned on, an acoustic sound appears indicating an error regarding the display. The laptop still functions normally when I connect it to an external display. What do you think is broken? Thank you

Laptop for highschool/college
Hi! I am currently debating buying a ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 with a 11th Gen core i7 with 16gb of ram (with LCD not IPS I think??). I won't be doing anything incredibly intensive, but I would like it to last for a good while. So would this be a good laptop for highschool/college for the next few years (even though it's a few years old at this point)? (As a note I would be buying it second hand for about $600) Thank you!

Thinkpad recommendation - office work
It is with a heavy heart that I think I finally have to consider replacing my beloved T480s. I've had this thing five years now, and can probably still nurse it along for a little longer, but at some point in the next six months I'm going to need to upgrade to something that can crunch Office files better than this one can. Everything works brilliantly, except that it chokes and dies on Microsoft Word when working on a large document with tracked changes.
(This is a non-negotiable part of my job, as I need to send 200+ page documents with thousands of comments and changes back and forth to authors and collaborators. Whatever I get next, it needs to have enough power to breeze through documents like that.)
I upgraded my RAM about 18 months ago, and that has definitely helped, but I'm running into too many projects that slow this thing down to a crawl while Word processes comments. I assume it's the processor that's the issue, but - [insert shrugging guy here\]. I'm open to other suggestions. I'm fairly comfortable opening the machine up and swapping things around, but draw the line at soldering.
I've looked at a lot of the current Thinkpad options, but I'm not sure what my best choice is.
These are my current specs:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz 1.99 GHz
24 gigs ram
500 gig HDD
Other thoughts:
I have a 14" screen but I'm considering upgrading to 16". I have a second monitor set up in my home office, but it would be nice to have more screen real estate when I'm elsewhere.

Edited b/c I misunderstood what kind of drive I have. I have an NVMe SSD , 512 gigs.
Cost is definitely an issue, but I also want to keep the next one as least as long as I've had this one, so it's got to be solid enough to last me five years. I see the prices in Canadian, and I'd prefer under 2k, but could go a little higher if necessary. So... say 2K USD is my hard upper limit.
I don't game on this machine, and don't need fancy video or editing software. The fanciest thing I get up to with graphics is messing around in GIMP.
Portability is an issue, to some extent. The T480s is about 3 lbs, and it gets heavy when hiking around campus. I know I'm not going to find anything lighter, but ideally the next one won't be too much heavier. (Mileage will vary if I do get a bigger screen, of course. It's a tradeoff I'm willing to make.)
I've been eyeing a few different machines at vastly different price points - the ThinkBook 14 Gen 6 AMD (14″)/21kj0026us), mostly because it's on sale right now, but the P16s Gen 2-mobile-workstation/21k9001mus) is so sexy. I have no idea what specs will be enough of an improvement to justify the cost, and what would be sheer overkill.
Any recommendations?
