ThinkPads out today worth picking up in the future used market
Hello! First post here.
I picked up a Thinkpad T470S used a few months ago and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. Granted, a two core i5-6300U CPU is a bit anemic, but I just needed it to open files, go to the internet to access portals and type stuff, and for $250usd it did all of the above better than any new netbooks near the price range I could find on the new market. My favourite discovery was the wwan card- filled it with a super cheap mobile plan and now I'm no longer limited by access to wifi. Aside from that, I was surprised by the touchscreen- didn't need one, but neat to have. Best part, everything was easy to access and maintain- one screwdriver kit and one paperclip and I could get anywhere.
One of my relatives showed up with a semi-bricked L13 Thinkpad Yoga and my experience with that one was an absolute horror. Couldn't even get the back panel off because half the screws were slipping threads(not stripped btw). all ram soldered down, 8gb total. If that thing showed up for $100usd used I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.
So now I'm conflicted- some ThinkPads seem very lovely (like my T470S dinosaur) and some horrid. Which is a problem, as my T470S probably won't live forever and I'm already convinced I want to buy something used in the future. I know that we don't have a crystal ball and it's hard to guess what the tech market would look like in five years. My question is more: which models do you see in today's ThinkPads that you'd think would be worth considering if/when businesses release them into the used market in the future? Bonus points for easy disassembly, upgrade slots and features.

Flat tip angle adapters - do they exist? I want to move the cable away from the side to the back of the laptop to declutter the left side of my desk.

My first ThinkPad after years of macbook

Hi everyone, and apologies for my English. I wanted to share my experience with my first ThinkPad, coming from being a long-time macbook user. Hopefully, this post can help answer some questions for others in a similar situation.
At first, I was considering getting the M1 macbook air, but after dealing with the poor experience of a flimsy keyboard, only two usb-c ports, and an awful dual-core i5 cpu, I decided it was time for a change. I was also tired of macOS and wanted to try a different OS as well.
As a computer science student, my typical workflow is to run IntelliJ, vscode, up to ten browser tabs, and Notion. Sometimes I run linux on a VM as well. After doing some research, I initially leaned towards the ThinkPad T480 due to its durability and 'legendary' status. But, I decided to buy a newer T14(Gen 1) with an AMD cpu to give that a try.
**Specs:**
* **AMD Ryzen 4750u (8 cores, 16 threads)**
* **14” Full HD IPS touch-screen (privacy guard)**
* **RX Vega 7 graphics**
* **32 GB DDR4 RAM**
* **512 GB NVMe SSD**
* **Fingerprint reader**
* **Backlit keyboard (refurbished)**
I paid €480 for my t14, which I know is a bit pricey compared to the US. My only concern is the display, the privacy guard. It’s really bad, and while I know I could swap it out, I’m worried about breaking something, and the repair services in my country don’t want to handle it either.
That said, after years of using my mac, I finally feel like I can breathe again with the amazing keyboard and a cpu that still holds up well today. I can't imagine a workload that could make this cpu struggle. At home, I connect my t14 to a Dell 1440p 120Hz monitor, and thanks to the hdmi 2.0, it runs perfectly at 120Hz. Watching 4K 60fps youtube videos? No problem. 20 browser tabs open? No problem. Running three IDEs and a Linux VM all at once? No problem at all.
This is a huge contrast to my old mac, which would max out its cpu with just five browser tabs and a 1080p video running. The touchpad on the t14 is ok, but not amazing. The speakers are surprisingly good, even compared to the macbook, and the battery life ranges from 4-7 hours depending on what I'm doing.
Overall, I'm really satisfied with this purchase, and the best part is that I no longer feel limited like I did with my mac.
