Which Linux distro for my X1C Gen 12 ?
Hey,
I am willing to switch Linux on my X1 Carbon Gen 12 (it's the Core Ultra 7 155U with the IPS panel and privacy guard).
I have already tried using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, but encountered some issues :
* The touchpad experience - it was lacking precision and didn't feel like the "precision touchpad" I was used to on Windows, even after tuning "libinput" with whatever settings I found online, it felt off.
* The speakers sound quality - they sounded horrendous, it appears that Dolby does not support Linux with Atmos drivers. After searching for solutions, I did spend some time playing with "EasyEffects", before eventually giving up because I couldn't find any presets that matched the sound quality on Windows.
* Battery life was not any better than Windows, despite the OS being lighter - I guess that power management drivers do not exist out of the box for these recent CPUs.
* No support for fingerprint authentication on Bitwarden's browser extensions (but that would be the case on any Linux distro)
* The privacy guard state indicator is reverted (indicates ON when it's OFF)
For all these reasons I decided to reinstall Windows, I do not want to compromise on anything and just want something that works.
I am interested into trying KDE instead of GNOME, because I read somewhere that touchpad works better, but I am not sure.
Do you guys have any "success stories" of running Linux on X1CG12, and if yes, what distro are you using ?
Thanks !

Best used budget thinkpads? Which models are worth buying in 2025?
i dont really mind if its on the lower end, my budget reflects that (300-450 cad).

Review of the ThinkPad T480 after 4 months of use by a 14-year-old Ukrainian schoolboy.
I'm just a regular school outcast. I'm 14 years old. I decided to work part-time during the summer to buy a ThinkPad X230. In the end, I saved up $125 and bought a regular used model in good condition. But I wasn't happy with the X230 because the battery didn't last long, the HD screen was terrible, and it hummed like an airplane when I had two Firefox tabs open. As a result, in the fall, I started a small business hosting on my homelab. I don't make $100,000 a second, but on average, I make about $65 a month, which is fine for me. Due to frequent power outages, I decided to sell my X230 and buy a T480. In the end, I got $46 more for it than I paid for it =). It came to me in a box from Meest international delivery (a popular company in Ukraine that delivers from China and the US) with labels indicating that it came from Washington, DC. There are visible signs of use, but I don't care, the main thing is that it works. As it turned out, the external battery worked very well. Linux says that the battery will last for \~6 hours, and the built-in battery is worn down to 49% and the laptop works on it for \~30 minutes. I really like that it is powerful. But I think everyone here doesn't care how I got it. Let's get to the pros and cons from the perspective of a Ukrainian schoolboy.
Pros:
The i7-8650U is quite powerful compared to the i5-3320M.
There is a camera shutter.
The microphone is fine for communication and conferences.
Quiet cooler.
Energy efficient (Chrome, Zoom, and LibreOffice Writer).
Normal quality IPS Full HD screen.
The camera is certainly not high quality, but it's fine for conferences (there is a power indicator).
Cons:
The bottom of the screen is too large.
Sound controls are now built into F1, F2, F3, and F4.
The sleep button is not marked on the keyboard (I found out in HMM that Fn+4 puts the computer to sleep).
The power button no longer looks like a nuclear reactor, but is just a white lamp.
I can't stand the FnLock idea.
Unnecessary buttons. Lol, why is there a button on the keyboard to open settings and favorites?
The screen cover leaves fingerprints. I was writing on a piece of paper that was lying on the laptop, and when I removed the paper, I was shocked to see that everything I had written on the paper was imprinted on the cover. But it all came off with a damp cloth.
After a while, the frame on the screen peels off from the bottom or top.
I think that's all I have to say about my experience with the T480.

P51/52 for school?
Im a Student and would like to Switch from my iPad to a Laptop.
Reason for P Series: Upgradability, Performance
Weight isnt really an issue for me because my bag is already Heavy.
Batterylife and Fan Noise are what I’m worried about Most but I think I have a fix: Make a custom power Limit with 20-25w and disabled dGPU.
Both p51 and p52 are around the same Price (250-350€).
Before you say t480, they start at 250€ where I live)
Edit: OS would be Linux

Gonna pick up a T460 for cheap for my father
As the title suggests, I'm thinking of picking up a T460 for only 50$.
My father has been needing an upgrade from a 200$ HP junk top he got from Best buy a few years ago (It had only 4gb of ram with a 1tb HDD and windows 10)
I'm thinking of getting this for him since he only really needs it for running Excel and Word, doing basic work like that.
I was thinking of getting a T480 but jeez, those prices are wild ATM and a T470 is nice but still a little overpriced for what it is ATM.
To add onto this, I have a T480S that I will probably give to him if the T460 is better for my use case, since I only need something for simple college stuff, no coding or any of that.
