Replacing my “modern” thinkpads with an X1 Extreme?

My uses are all over the place so stick with me.

T490: couch resident and media consumer. It’s light and has a decent screen so it just kinda hangs out around the house

P53: desktop replacement, light gaming. Only machine that can boot windows which comes in handy a lot.

T470: almost exclusively coding and WFH. Honestly I don’t know why this has become my work horse… it’s the only dual core and has the worst screen out of the whole list. Also the machine I travel with. Again, I don’t know why. I think it’s the keyboard.

The X1 extreme has caught my eye cause I think I can fill all those roles with 1 machine (with the help of a T430 that’s about to be modded to f*ck). It’s light like the T490 and actually has the exact same gpu/cpu as the P53. Are there any downsides to this switch up? Honestly pretty tired of working between 3 machines.

Silicon Keyboard Cover

Is it safe to use silicone keyboard cover on my T495?

I know that dust is the #1 enemy of your digital friends and you should avoid them being dusty but I also read that covers can block the air flow through the keyboard.

Need expert suggestion.

I got my first thinkpad

Recently I got my first thinkpad E16 amd after using my old MacBook pro 11 from 2011.

So far so good, I'm using fedora and apart from some drivers everything is working fine. I was able to limit the battery charge to 80 for longevity.

Some questions:
Some tips for making the battery last longer? In terms of longevity and battery life
How can I install drivers for fedora?

Why is everyone collecting multiple thinkpads? Whats the like hype around having multiple? I'm not trying to sound rude but I'm just curious why so many people are making collections lol

consumer-grade laptop. With ThinkPad, you're not just buying a laptop; you're investing in years of dependability.

Everything will have issues at some point, or course... but, wow. Want the unbreakable laptop? Get a Thinkpad.

My i5 Yoga 12 does not come with a stylus or even a slot for it, instead there seems to be a plastic placeholder that mimics the stylus placeholder, is there a way to add the stylus slot to it? I've seen other Yogas with said feature.

Should i sell my t460 laptop to buy a more future proof t480?

Should i sell my t460 laptop to buy a more future proof t480?
Sorry English isn't my first language.

Context: i've recently bought a used t460 for about 50€. It was listed as parts only (no ram no hard drive) and i've replaced the motherboard for about 50€. I've added an 240gb ssd and 16gb of ram. Overall i got myself a fully functionnal t460 for about 140€.

I would be happy to keep it, despote the horrible 1360x765 display.
I also look at the t480, which would be a great deal, i would have to pay arround 300€ for a refurbished t480 on backmarket.
That way i would keep the upgreadability of thinkpad since i don't like the new versions that much.
My question is should i sell my t460 to have a more future proof t480 ?

Clueless about computers…help? ME student

The title says it all! I’m a mechanical engineering student and I’m about to transfer to uni and desperately need to upgrade my laptop. I’ve had my Lenovo yoga 720 15IIKB for 7 years now and over the last 2 it’s quality has noticeably went down. I love this laptop so much but it’s extremely heavy with all the stuff I already carry so was hoping someone could recommend me one that isn’t as heavy as well.

I can’t buy new because I don’t have a lot of money so I’m looking on FB marketplace, Craigslist etc.
I saw someone selling a lenovo thinkpad e15 20rd005gus brand new for $700 obo but I dont know anything about specs nor do I know about the generation and what it’s worth (I think it’s a bit over priced bc it looks a few years old but again I’m not sure)
I use solid works, auto cad, matlab so far but prob will download more things in uni.
I will take any brand recommendations to look them up and see if people are selling them but if you know any lower costing ones to buy new that would be great too. Pls no apple products. I have an iPad that I barely use because I couldn’t get into digital notes and just really dislike Macs.
Thank you !!

Thinkpad: The Unbreakable Laptop - A Long-Term Report from a Daily Thinkpad User

ThinkPad vs. The World: My 7-Year Stellar Test Results: (My Thinkpads won't break!)

ThinkPad T430: The Indestructible Workhorse

Purchase Date: 2017, second-hand (2013 manufacture date.)
Performance: Still blazing fast in 2024.
Maintenance: Minimal; battery and CMOS battery replaced
Durability: Survived where others failed.

In 2017, I dipped my toes in the Lenovo waters with a used Thinkpad T430 from 2013, unsure what to expect. It came in perfect shape equipped with an i5 processor and 8GB of RAM, and cost $190. Fast forward to 2024, and this laptop is still performing like it's fresh out of the box. Even today, it's fast enough to meet 99% of my computing needs, minus occasional video editing which I do on a newer Thinkpad now.

Durability and Maintenance: What's astonishing is the minimal maintenance required. Almost nothing breaks. The only replacements were the easily removable battery and the CMOS battery after many years. (Easy!) For added speed, I introduced a solid-state drive, though the original hard drive was still in excellent shape. Even with the charging port showing minor wiggle-wear, the laptop and its charging functions flawlessly. This durability is in stark contrast to my previous experience with an HP laptop, which succumbed to multiple hardware issues in just under two years, like a busted hinge, overheating, and keyboard issues... Thinkpads hold up wayyyy better.

With daily use, my T430 has stood the test of time. It's become my running joke that I can't replace it because it won't die.

So, Astonished with its Quality, I Bought Another One: So impressed by the T430, I purchased a Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 3 direct from Lenovo in 2021 for my studies and video editing needs. Mirroring the reliability of the T430, this newer model has also been a powerhouse for the past three years. The only things I can complain about are so minor, it's like, "who cares?" One thing is that when adding a second solid state drive, the screws were too tight. Also, the coating on my spacebar has been wearing off on the spot where my thumb hits it from constant typing. No big deal. Also, I "think" the bottom left of my touchpad has been less responsive to clicks lately, but I might just be imagining it. . . In other words, it's fine with some minor wear-- more wear than on the older T430 which still gets regular daily use.

Family Introduction to ThinkPad: Continuing my trust in ThinkPad's reliability, I recently ordered another used Thinkpad-- a T490 with an 8th gen i7-- for my mother. At the time of my writing, these used laptops are running between $200-$300, and you can find some really good deals. It's an excellent deal considering the proven quality of these laptops. I refuse to inflict some consumer model on her, even though the processor might be faster these days. (The speed of new computers is really a case of diminishing returns. For anything other than heavy video processing, there's really no difference.) I've learned that Thinkpad durability far eclipses any good you'd get from the temporary increase in speed and power from a newer, cheaper machine. It's literally the difference between a laptop that meets military-grade field-durability requirements and some piece of crap built to be thrown away and replaced in a couple of years. I have no doubt this used laptop will be in perfect shape for my mother a decade out with a couple battery replacements, and maybe a hard drive swap-out at some point.

Fortunately, with Lenovos you can just unscrew the back, and pop something in without hassle. Yesss!

Closing Thoughts: After my first laptop disaster with a consumer-grade HP, Lenovo ThinkPads have redefined durability for me. They're a shining example of reliability alongside consumer-grade garbage laptops that deteriorate rapidly. Their ease of repair for minor issues only adds to their appeal. After my experience, I'd always opt for a used ThinkPad over a new

Would getting a Thinkpad increase my Linux satisfaction?

I posted here around last August and talked about always wanting to get a ThinkPad for my first year in Uni. Unfortunately, the laptop that my family helped me buy was a Lenovo Yoga 7i 16. Unfortunately, for some reason, the Best Buy I went to had none in stock at the time, and my sister was pressuring me at the time to pick something...

Anyways, for a regular consumer laptop, it's pretty great for what it is, but it wasn't built for Linux support. I uninstalled Windows 11 because I got mad that I couldn't set it up without wifi (I had no wifi at the time for half a week) and had a Fedora USB already ready. It's been a few months now, and nothing was straight up broken(I probably should have look up if Linux work on it or not :D that was a roulette), but I've noticed issues now and then, like battery life being subpar 5 to 8 hrs\~ or a random bugs I have to circumvent.

Anyways, to get to the point, I've saved up some money in my tech piggy bank, and I'm thinking of buying a ThinkPad/linux-supported laptop and reinstalling Windows on the Yoga 7i for note-taking in my classes or building a PC, and putting Linux on that and installing Windows 11 on the Yoga 7i for note-taking. What dose r/thinkpad think is the best option for me to take? It not like hate the yoga 7i and having the device is a privilege, but I've been hyping up and fantasying myself having a Thinkpad since middle school...

I could also just save my money for now and reinstall Windows 11, but I don't like the direction Microsoft is taking windows. I don't want my main device flashing me ads every time I hit the windows menu, but I am willing to reinstall during spring break if it improve my overall usage experience.
