Used ThinkPad purchase suggestions?
Im looking to upgrade from my old laptop and seen alot of people suggest used ThinkPads. However, Im not familiar with the differences between all the models and years, what has better battery, etc, so I'm looking for suggestions.
Primary use case I had for my old laptop was tuning offroad vehicles with hptuners (which should be light and easy to run, but was too heavy for the 10-15 year old laptop I was using before). Id like to also use the suggested laptop for 3d printing/modeling. Then general internet browsing, maybe light gaming but thats not necessary since I have my steam deck and my desktop.
Some specs I'd love is the battery to last 5+ hours, be under or around 200-300usd, 8gb ram or more, 900p or 1080p, and decently durable since I have to use it outside sometimes, while not being too bulky. I'd prefer a 14-15" screen to keep it medium small. And I'm not bothered by taking a laptop apart to replace a battery, install ssd or more ram, etc, if necessary.
Thanks for the help yall

Thinkpad E14 AMD Gen2 bottom cover tamper detected
Hi fams
Just received my Thinkpad from eBay seller, purchased as Ryzen 7 4700U 2.00GHz, 16GB RAM No SSD/OS BIOS LOCKED
I asked the seller if I could still run Windows if I got it pre-installed on the SSD. He answered "yes, you can...".
Fired up the laptop, ran a few tests, all fine
Turned off, unscrewed the bottom cover, opened the battery, cmos.
Reconnected everything and got "bottom cover hack detected"
What should I do?
How they removed the ssd and everything was ok?
And also there is screen with "enter admin password" :(

I'm studying Business Analytics. I'm not sure which think pad series, is the best. Is there any kind of important factors I should consider when buying a new one?

I've heard that latest ryzen generations are actually not that good. What would your choice be in 2024?
For T or X series.

Downsizing the "collection" a bit, wanted a smaller workhorse that'll last me a while for work and travel, seemed like a solid deal. Will be replacing my P15s Gen2 that has served me well. Can't wait for it to get here!

What should I get
I want to get a ThinkPad due to their fixability and openness. My current laptop is getting old and I thought why not get something i can upgrade over time. I want to use it for light gaming like Minecraft, and computer science project; I'll be running Linux. I also like the more retro boxy look of then, so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be thankful.

Just got my first Thinkpad!
I just got my first job (yes I am young) and I spent the money from my first paycheck on a Lenovo Thinkpad T540p. I love it so much and I am trying a bunch of diffrent Linux distros on it right now. If you have any tips you think I should, please share!

PSA: Guys, whether you're getting a used or new ThinkPad please check the internal screws
I noticed quite a trend here for quite a while of posts on new ThinkPads with rattling/creacking noises on the chassis or various other forms of manufacturing defects/poor QC from Lenovo
This shouldn't happen on brand new machines ofc but it's a whole another topic. This lead me to check my T480 which I bought used. I noticed the USB-C ports were quite wobbly and USB-A ports on the right hand side seemed not so solid too
You know what? They were not screwed in quite as they should! I know, not a rocket science, huh? But it helps. Sometimes these used ThinkPads coming from batch purchases for different businesses are reselled a bunch of times and assembled/dissasembled a few times. Not everyone has 120 IQ for repairing computers (sadly) and people are just people - somebody might just forget the basics
That's it. Bottom line - check your screws guys! 😏

why does windows suck so much?
I just bought a lenovo t480, and i actually really like the computer, but windows 10/11 is just miserable. It's making me want to just throw this computer out the window.
Is there a better solution out there? And if so, what? I really actually enjoy this Thinkpad. It's the first windows-based computer I kinda am fond of after switching back from a mac, which I'm starting to really dislike due to their policies, prices, non-upgradability, and cult-like fame, etc. (the keyboard on this is just amazing, the color, look, upgradability/customization at a low price, etc). I can upgrade literally everything on this! I love that. This thing was honest 1/10th the price of a mac. I f'in love that. But tbh, windows does suck. Apple is right about that :)
I heard Linux is an option but that's farely vague. Which Linux work best for thinkpads, and is the easiest and simplest? I'm not a programmer nor do I really want to have to program everything to work if I don't have to. I just use it for basics like discord, zoom, web browsing, watching youtube videos, the brave browser, spotify, bluetooth, taking online classes, and using the tradingview app (I can use the website if I absolutely have to). Are there any linuxes that really work well out of the box and are user friendly and easy to install?
thank you.

Buying advice: I won $1,500. What ThinkPad do you recommend that'll last a while?
I won $1,500 from a friend on a longshot bet.
He actually paid!
Instead of blowing it on something super stupid, I'd like to get a ThinkPad that'll last a few years for:
Lots of simultaneous browser & PDF tabs. I do research and lightweight development
Occasional PowerPoints and similar business-type graphics
Some front-end development & a background web server
I'm most partial to:
Portability. Favor 14" 32-GB RAM & 2-TB SSD minimum
Snappy performance
The ThinkPad-iest keyboard
"All-day" battery life
Balance between screen quality and battery life
Your advice would be appreciated.

T14s Gen 3 riddled with sleep/wake issues
Hello All,
WARNING: RANT AHEAD
I'm at my wit's end. I was issued a T14s Gen 3 AMD by my employer and I am just baffled at how unreliable the power management is as relates to standby. Reading through this subreddit, I understand these issues persist among several generations of devices, and I am not the only one affected. How Lenovo and Microsoft (and AMD?) have not ironed this out is beyond me.
My issues are as follows:
1. Sleep is never a guaranteed state, sometimes my device will sleep but will still run operations while in transit, leading to overheating and battery drain. I understand this is a consequence of MS modern standby, and is not necessarily the fault of Lenovo. Doesn't matter whose fault it is, it's unacceptable. This should NEVER happen while the battery is unplugged and the device is in transit.
2. Related to above: battery drain is unpredictable, and often the battery will drain a significant amount while in standby.
3. FREEZING AND CRASHING when waking from standby. This happens unpredictably as well, as sometimes the standby will recover and I can get back to my desktop without issue. Sometimes the system freezes and it lasts a few seconds, other times it BSOD's. It's a dice roll, and this is UNACCEPTABLE in this business device.
4. While on battery and plugged in, my device will shut itself off entirely while sleeping. I often keep the device docked and place it in standby to find it completely shut off the next morning.
I am on the latest BIOS, with the latest drivers installed for AMD chipset/graphics, and if anything, the behavior has gotten more erratic as time has moved on. No amount of driver/BIOS combinations work to standardize the behavior to make it easier to troubleshoot. I have tried all the basic troubleshooting steps: clean reinstall, fast boot disabled, changing power plans, etc.
Last Lenovo laptop my household will ever own. I honestly cannot fathom how these issues are possible from such a major vendor.

Immortal ?
My cat spilled a glass of water on my thinkpad L14 gen1 (open and unplugged) during the night, and it’s been soaking for a few hours already.
Computer seems fine for the moment (still working, keyboard ok), I shut it down (the computer, not the cat), opened the cover and put it upside down on paper towels to let it dry throughout the day.
Anything else I should do ? Apart from never having glasses of water around it 🤡
