Big Sad - our company switched to DELL
So, this just happend.... Management had a meeting with all EDSTs and our boss and due to numerous complains about Lenovo's warranty, our company decided to go full on DELL :(
Laptops, workstations, servers... everything. Within the next 18 months they've got a plan to replace every single LENOVO branded product in our company. Which means that my laptop - half a year overdue for a replacement - is going to be a Latitude 5440. Goddamnit, our computers weren't even that prone to failure... over 500 laptops and about 150 workstations, and an average of 8 devices per year needed parts and/or replacement under warranty. Lenovo's shitty support, and their attitude to look for reasons not to repair rather than commit to the warranty, killed them as a manufacturer in the eyes of our management.
Looks like my T480 is going to replace my L470 at home and I'll be stuck with a DELL at work for the next 4 years. Sad.

Can the T490 drive 4k60 and WQHD60 display via thunderbolt USB C Dock at the same time?
Hey there!
Been thinking about getting a used T490 as my studies (CS) sometimes require me to use Linux.
Main device is a M1 MBP, so it will not become my main device.
Nonetheless, when not on the go, I‘d love to simply connect it to my Caldigit Ts3+ Dock, just like my Macbook and then have a full desktop experience.
Can the T490 drive one 4k display at 60hz and one WQHD Display at 60hz at the same time, while its lid is closed?

A question - in windows settings (W10 or W11) does your system show Base System Device", "USB 3.0 Hub", "PCI to PCI Bridge" in "Bluetooth & Other Devices" (IE where you would expect to see your headset, etc - not the device manager!)

I'm a student, X1 Yoga Gen 3 for 320 euros or something else?
I'm in my first year of uni for environmental engineering (excel, documents and maybe some modelling in the future) and it has started to become apparent that a laptop would be highly useful. ThinkPads have obviously emerged as my preferred choice.
There is an i7-8650u, 16gb, 1440p, touchscreen Gen 3 Yoga available locally for 320 euros, which I have the money right now.
Now the conundrum, our country is paying our tax rebates and I'm getting back 350€. What I'm wondering is, whether it is worth it to wait around 3 months for that money and then get a ThinkPad for around 500-600€ or is this one good enough?

The cpu and video card frequencies drop below 1ghz under long term load. I have disassembled it, cleaned it and changed the thermal paste, it didn't help. Is there any way to limit the CPU power so it doesn't overheat and drop frequencies?

Help me decide: T16 Gen1 AMD vs T14 Gen4 Intel
Hello,
I am looking to buy a new Thinkpad for my job. I am a Software Developer, so my use of the laptop will be pretty typical for a Development job:
VSCode, some Docker containers, multiple browser tabs open, Slack, some terminal windows etc
I plan on doing an Ubuntu installation on my new laptop.
I have concluded on 2 laptop's and I would like to hear your opinions on which I should buy:
ThinkPad T16 Gen1 AMD ( 871 EUROS )
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U
RAM: 16GB soldered LP DDR5 6400Mhz
Storage: 512GB
Display: 400 nits IPS ,Low Power, 16 inch
ThinkPad T14 Gen4 Intel ( 1429 EUROS )
CPU: Intel Core i7 1355U
RAM: 32GB (16GB Soldered + 16GB Expansion) DDR5 RDIMM 5200MHz
Storage: 1TB
Display: 300 nits IPS
The T16 AMD laptop has the better display and a good CPU but the only thing that is troubling me is the 16 GB of soldered RAM. I tend to keep my machines for quite a while and in the future the 16 GB might be a problem. But for now, the laptop is killer and the price seems right.
The T14 Intel laptop has the notoriously bad 300 nit display ( I know that you can upgrade these on your own but I am not very good with tinkering hardware ), but has more ram and the Intel CPU seems to be pretty decent compared to its 12th gen counterparts. The price is almost double though.
I do WFH, and I mainly work in Docked mode with two external monitors, but I do some traveling and staying at friend's houses etc. I do like the idea of having a 16 inch display just in case I start working more and more solely from my laptop. I also like the idea of having a usable display. I read some horrible things for the 300 nit displays.
Would like to hear your input on this.

Need help in getting ThinkPad
Hi guys,
I am planning to get a performant and future proof ThinkPad with the below specs:
Processor: Intel i7 H/P (open to hear AMD)
RAM: 32/less but upgradable
SSD: 512/1TB
OS: linux
GPU: None but upgradable
I will be mostly using it for coding: web/mobile/docker with no gaming. I am planning to keep it for solid 3-5 years and beyond.
According to the above config: ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11 comes up with the Build my PC option.
But wanted to know if this will be a good fit for my purpose.
Also, I live in India and planning to get one from US based store from my cousin, so was also wondering about the warranty/service aspect.
On a side note, I am also doubting to get a MacBook with M2 pro chip(need to check reseller) but I can use the money for some other family expenses.

I come with a never-before-seen question about which of these two machines to buy (T450s or T470s). In my company, they are renewing hardware and offering me these two options:

Currently, I already have a T14s as my main work computer and a desktop computer for personal use. The main use I would give to this equipment would be to tinker with Linux, run some virtual machines, and perform programming and pentest tasks.

Initially, I had thought about the T450s. Is it a good price? Is it worth paying more than double for the T470S with the increase in RAM and disk?

I'm based in Bangladesh. Here new laptops price are crazy. I'm a full stack developer. Will be running a few docker instances at a time and coding.
So far I have found 3 used laptops deal.
X1 carbon gen 8 (i5 10th gen 16/512) Costs around $500.
X1 Carbon gen 9 ( i5 11th gen 16/512 4k panel) for $620.
Thinkpad T16 gen 1 (i5 12th gen 16/512) for $680.
I want to use this laptop for at least next 3-4 years.
I will be using Linux. So is it worth to pay the extra price for T16 since it comes with 12th gen processors?

Hi, I am in the process of upgrading to an X1 Gen 11 thinkpad i7, and I am deciding between having 32 GB RAM vs getting the OLED version with 16 GB as RAM as the model with both is beyond my budget as well above 2000£
I will use it mainly for MS office work, emails, some data analysis, some website designing as a co founder

Manually replacing the cells inside a removable dead battery?
Has anyone ever tried just opening a removable battery which is on its way out and replacing the individual cells? I hear people struggling to find good batteries for an acceptable price, but why not just replace the cells then? It shouldn't be too expensive and would require basically no knowledge of the battery and maybe a soldering iron.
Most batteries are just off-the-shelf cells which you should be able to find replacements for somewhat easily.
Or is the battery "capacity" stored in the controller inside the battery which cannot be reset (which would be rather weird, because if your battery has 0% charge (100% stone dead) your battery would be fully dead anyway, so the cheaper volatile memory type would make more sense)

t460p charging problems :-(
Hiya! I have a t460p which I use to run Debian that I've been using only since January, but was bought refurbished — so I'm not actually sure how old it was.
The 120w charger I got for it was working fine for a while, actually up until yesterday. I would have to fiddle with it a bit to get it to charge — it is very loose in the socket — but when I did it would charge just fine. Unfortunately, yesterday it completely stopped charging.
I might try and get an ultra docking station, and charge it that way, but I'm not quite sure if it's compatible with the T460p (the OCM table says "P6" in the relevant cell, but I can't find a legend for what this means so I'm just confused)
1) Is it okay or normal for it to be loose in the socket? It eludes me why it is that way, because the pin in the charger and the recepticle for the pin in the socket don't seem to jiggle around.
2) Should I try and get a new charger, or a new charger socket?
3) Should I get an ultra docking station? Is it compatible?

Do numpads make the keyboard any more flimsy
Like the title said, I'm torn between 15 and 14 inch since I don't care about the numpad but also have bad vision and would rather be able to see the screen when I split into 2 tabs
That said, can someone who tried both sizes of ThinkPad compare the experience, replaceability and sturdiness between keyboard sizes, I know ThinkPads are known for their keyboards but still

Is AI hardware just marketing?
Are AI cores of new Intel, Nvidia, and AMD generation just a distraction to put higher prices, and meanwhile downgrading the speed of the hardware?
Is AI hardware actually usefull? Will it make an app run faster? Or get more (real) FPS on a game?
So, do the new ThinkPad generation worth the upgrade?
