Serious thinkpad noob question

So I started looking for a new laptop for private use and because I just got a thinkpad issued for work I looked into them because I really like it. I then came across this sub and have a serious question (please no hate):

why do so many of you want to buy older thinkpads? Are they like collectibles or do you actually use them? Wouldn’t a laptop with a 6th gen intel processor be quite slow today?

I’m thankful for all explanations

What would I miss by installing Linux?

I just got my new ThinkPad p14s gen5 after a decade of using a chromebook.

For the moment I'm staying with win11, the ThinkPad has enough oomph to run wsl. And steam just works. But I'm curious what I would lose by fully going to Linux. Google drive works no fuss on the chromebook. The threads are mostly "Microsoft bad doggy".

I want to know, typing with shift + 1,2,3 etc is the same as a standard US layout? What are the difference? Will I regret buying thinkpad with this type of keyboard?

Thank you

My X13 Gen 5 review

I hope this review might come handy to people who are in the same situation as I were.

First specs:

Intel Ultra 5 125U
16 GB RAM
512 GB storage
1920x1200 400nits
54,7 kWh battery
Price: 1480 euros

Also ran some 3DMark tests:

Steel nomad light - 1516
CPU profile: max threads - 3237

I am an Apple girl ok - I basically have everything apart from a MacBook. I was considering a MBA but I came across a deal breaking issue - the program I use for accounting is not supported on macOS. So there started my hunt for the perfect laptop for my job and school. While searching I came across this sub and instantly fell in love with ThinkPads.

I would say that X13 is a bit of a niche choice. I was torn between T14 and X13 and the portability of X13 won for me. X13 is super light and I am fine with the 13'' screen as I use an external monitor at home. The build quality is excellent and I haven't had any issues apart from my sweaty hands smudging the exterior (nothing that a regular cleaning can't fix). Even under load it is quiet and runs quite cold. Max temp I reach on the CPU is about 70 C. It was a bit of a bummer for me that they don't come equipped with AMD chips but the Intel performs very well. Battery life is also amazing - it last me a whole day at uni even on my longest day which is 10 hours.

The biggest issue I have with thinkpads are those stupid ms teams buttons. I know thinkpads are business laptops but whatever its annoying that you can't easily remap them. I really miss media buttons (I remapped CTRL+arrows to serve that purpose using powertools).

I tried running minecraft and got like 30-40 fps out of curiosity as I don't plan on gaming on this machine.

I have used the X13 for like a month now and I am loving it so far. I would even say that the X13 is a perfect windows replacement for MBA. Wouldn't recommend it for someone who edits videos or does anything "creative" there I would definitely go for the MBA and the power of M processors. But for me as I mentioned before I use it for accounting and mostly stuff uni related. Just started first year of masters in IT and for that it is perfect.

I know this review is a bit vague but I haven't really seen many X13 reviews and this machine deserves some love. If you have any related questions I will try to answer them.

My first ThinkPad after years of macbook

https://preview.redd.it/5s86bkrhhcwd1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6470767249f9c0b6476db4e33a64605d0dbff9e5

Hi everyone, and apologies for my English. I wanted to share my experience with my first ThinkPad, coming from being a long-time macbook user. Hopefully, this post can help answer some questions for others in a similar situation.

At first, I was considering getting the M1 macbook air, but after dealing with the poor experience of a flimsy keyboard, only two usb-c ports, and an awful dual-core i5 cpu, I decided it was time for a change. I was also tired of macOS and wanted to try a different OS as well.

As a computer science student, my typical workflow is to run IntelliJ, vscode, up to ten browser tabs, and Notion. Sometimes I run linux on a VM as well. After doing some research, I initially leaned towards the ThinkPad T480 due to its durability and 'legendary' status. But, I decided to buy a newer T14(Gen 1) with an AMD cpu to give that a try.

**Specs:**

* **AMD Ryzen 4750u (8 cores, 16 threads)**
* **14” Full HD IPS touch-screen (privacy guard)**
* **RX Vega 7 graphics**
* **32 GB DDR4 RAM**
* **512 GB NVMe SSD**
* **Fingerprint reader**
* **Backlit keyboard (refurbished)**

I paid €480 for my t14, which I know is a bit pricey compared to the US. My only concern is the display, the privacy guard. It’s really bad, and while I know I could swap it out, I’m worried about breaking something, and the repair services in my country don’t want to handle it either.

That said, after years of using my mac, I finally feel like I can breathe again with the amazing keyboard and a cpu that still holds up well today. I can't imagine a workload that could make this cpu struggle. At home, I connect my t14 to a Dell 1440p 120Hz monitor, and thanks to the hdmi 2.0, it runs perfectly at 120Hz. Watching 4K 60fps youtube videos? No problem. 20 browser tabs open? No problem. Running three IDEs and a Linux VM all at once? No problem at all.

This is a huge contrast to my old mac, which would max out its cpu with just five browser tabs and a 1080p video running. The touchpad on the t14 is ok, but not amazing. The speakers are surprisingly good, even compared to the macbook, and the battery life ranges from 4-7 hours depending on what I'm doing.

Overall, I'm really satisfied with this purchase, and the best part is that I no longer feel limited like I did with my mac.
