T480 is so powerful and I’m really surprised by it

Flair is a bit misleading, not really an upgrade but wanted to share my experience as a first time Thinkpad user.

Scored a T480 for 200€ a few months ago and I’m so surprised by its performance.

Ran Ubuntu on it for the first few months because the default Windows installation from the owner before me was lagging on first startup and I thought it would be more efficient immediately, which is not true at all.

Had to install Windows and after debloating and adjusting animations, I have yet to encounter any hiccups. I’m multi tasking and using Ableton, Firefox, Nicotine+ and have a few folders open at the same time and it never stutters or freezes.

Super solid and I’m very happy, it does everything I ask from it.

Maybe the 32GB RAM make a difference, but don’t really know, never bothered to check task manager because there was no incentive to do so.

I love my Thinkpad :)

# So it all started back in September of 2025 when I got my first ThinkPad, a T480s. Worked well, no complaints whatsoever. However, as time went on, I got sucked deeper into the ThinkPad world, which lead me to look for a T60. After looking for one on Ebay and other platforms, I found one decently prices T60-And I must say: I love it!. The keyboard is awesome, the 4:3 aspect ratio and not to mention: the ports.

# After reading alla this and seeing the ThinkPad Yoga L13 Gen 4, you might be like: "Huh why did he pickup this seemingly out-of-place Laptop that’s quite different from both the T480s and T60.". ANd you’re right. Unlike the other two Laptops, the build quality isn’t the best. Honestly, the hinges suck and it has very few ports. Long story short: I got it for free cause the glass covering the screen is cracked. No, It’s not chipping and the screen is working just fine.

ThinkPad X9-15p X7 358H informal review: Great laptop, but not quite a ThinkPad.

Hey all, got a ThinkPad X9-15p with X7 358H in to test for my office and thought I'd share my opinion here.

For context, I head IT at an SMB and am about 30 ThinkPads deep on a migration away from a mixed Dell/HP fleet, which started in late 2025. I have been kitting out our users with P14s6, P16s4/T16s4 and X1 Carbon 13s as we go (depending on their role), so I have a good basis for comparison to new-generation ThinkPads. I have worked on and with ThinkPads and ThinkCenters for about 10 years, and currently daily drive an X1 Carbon Gen 13 (Intel 258V, VRR OLED panel, Sensel haptic touchpad).

TLDR
I'll get right to it: The X9-15p is a fantastically built, premium Windows laptop experience—but it's not the ThinkPad experience.

I don't say this as a change hater/ThinkPad purist. I don't mind the lack of TrackPoint, or the fact it's 'not black'. There are enough changes combined however, that have me going back to my X1 Carbon (which I type on as I write this).

The Good (Great, even): It's a premium device, no question.

1. Build quality. This is a finely crafted machine. The fit, finish, hinges, material choice—all top-notch. It is a premium device, no question. Even the fan noise, when the fans do need to kick in, are less intrusive / have a nicer 'pitch' than my X1 13 fans, which are higher pitched and a bit shrill by comparison.
2. 15" OLED Screen and 10MP webcam. Putting these together. Both the 2.8K touch OLED (120Hz w/ VRR) and the 10MP 4K webcam are outstanding. The webcam quality still can't quite match a MacBook, but it is indeed one of the best if not the best Windows laptop webcams I've ever used. Dealing with the current spectrum of 14" or 16" laptops, the 15" screen is actually a great size. Still portable without feeling like a boat, as the T16/P16s can at times.
3. Speakers. The 6 x speakers on this thing are fantastic. I won't nitpick if MacBook Pros have superior sound—they likely might—but as someone who uses both, the fidelity and range puts it in the neighbourhood of 'best laptop speakers'. This might not be something that matters for most business users, but as a mixed-use device it's a great feature for watching content or listening to music as you work.
4. Panther Lake X7 358H with Arc B390. A huge reason for trying out this laptop was it is one of the only SKUs that currently has the 358H available at the moment in North America. I won't glaze this CPU too much, suffice to say it is great—power and battery life in one package, when you need either. A very noticeable step up from my 258V in general system responsiveness. The B390 iGPU is no slouch, either. You'd have to step up to an RTX Blackwell 1000 or better to outpace this thing.
5. Battery life. An integrated 88wh battery into this relatively thin chassis, combined with the aforementioned 358H makes this a great laptop. I won't quite give it "all day" battery, but I did typical office work (browsers, Excel, music playing in background, etc.) unplugged for a full 8 hour day and had about 1 hour left. Gaming unplugged for me was about 3h. In any case, I never found myself with 'charger anxiety', which is great for a 16 core CPU, B390 and 2.8K OLED screen.
6. Port Selection. Over the first-gen X9 14/15, moving up to 3x TB4, 1x USB-A and a full SD card slot is great. The original X9 laptops were borderline for me, with only 2x TB4 and a headphone jack (which this laptop retains). The only thing really missing is ethernet, which I could not see myself using with this device, or a second USB-A. I think having a TB4 port on both sides is worth it, however. I hope all TP move to having at least one on each side.

The Not-so-Good, Misses, and why it's not a ThinkPad (for me): Ergonomics are lacklustre.

1. Keyboard. I had watched reviews on both this X9-15p and the previous gen 1 X9-15, so understood that this keyboard had less travel and generally was not going to be the 'purest expression' of a ThinkPad keyboard.

i got a thinkpad by accident

Well, not much to say. About seven months ago, I bought an ASUS VivoBook while I was saving up more money for a proper laptop for architecture school. I looked at the specifications and the discounted price, and decided to go for it.

About a month later, a package arrived. At first, I didn't notice anything unusual since I hadn't really thought much about the purchase for a while. I opened it, and my mother pointed out that it wasn't the laptop I had ordered. I checked and realized she was right, so I immediately contacted the supplier.

They told me that I would have to ship the laptop back to their warehouse, meaning I would have to spend my own money to fix a mistake they had made. Alternatively, they said I could contact the website where I had purchased it. While I kept insisting that I shouldn't be responsible for paying shipping costs for their error, I became curious and compared the laptop I originally bought with the one I received.

In terms of hardware, there wasn't a huge difference mainly the processor. The ThinkPad I received actually had a better processor than the laptop I originally ordered. However, I also noticed the absurd price difference between the two models. There was roughly a 2k difference in value.

I kept pushing the issue for a few days, but eventually I gave up and told the supplier that I would contact the website directly. In the end, I just kept the laptop. The model I received was the Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 3. So, while it's not exactly a powerhouse, it works well enough for architecture.

I have to say that, in terms of specifications, it's a bit underwhelming considering there are better options available for less money. Overall, if I'm being honest, it handles modeling software quite well. I don't have any issues opening large or complex models.

However, when I need to use rendering software, that's where it starts to fall behind. I wouldn't say the experience is ideal, since it has failed on me twice, crashing the program and restarting itself. That said, it's probably partly my fault as well, because, to be fair, I think I've pushed it pretty hard.

Are ThinkPads designed to be powered on 24/7?

I recently bought a T490. My question is whether I can leave it on 24/7 and when I'm not using it, simply close the lid to put it into sleep mode and resume the next day with all my programs open. I'm a little worried because my Ideapad 3 was damaged by doing that and is still being repaired after a couple of weeks.

WLAN upgrade for ThinkPad E580. WiFi 6E capable.

Today I upgraded my ThinkPad E580 from WiFi 5 to WiFi 6E. I had the RTL8822BE and now have the Intel AX210NGW. I’m happy to report the new WiFi card worked right out of the box on Linux Mint, no additional setup needed. I now have better Bluetooth connectivity and further WiFi range. Just want to put this out there in case anyone wanted to do this upgrade as well 👍.

This did not prepare me for those first few keystrokes, however. Coming from my X1C 13, and regularly using P14s6 and P16s4 at work, my initial reaction here was "Oh." Once I started typing on it for a longer while, I kind of got used to it, and in the end it wasn't the shallower key travel that puts me off of this keyboard—it's the weird coating/finish on the keys, the strange chamfering on the bottom edge, and a slight mushy feeling (?). All of this combined made it so that I could not truly enjoy typing on this to the same level as my other ThinkPads, and, to me, this is where I draw the absolute line of the ThinkPad experience. If you don't buy a ThinkPad because it's black, because of the TrackPoint, then you certainly buy one because they generally have the best typing experiences in the business. It's the whole center of what a business laptop needs to do well. For me, this is the biggest miss. Again, once you type on it for a few minutes straight, it's not a bad keyboard, but as soon as I switched back to my X1 Carbon today, the difference was again night and day.
2. Haptic Touchpad. Another item that I knew would be different, is that the X9-15 and -15p don't use Lenovo's key haptic touchpad supplier, Sensel. The X1C 13 and 14, and likely many others that I can't think of, have been standardized on Sensel pads, and specifically a design with tries to emulate the layout of the traditional ThinkPad trackpad with the top buttons and 'bumps' for the middle-click, to be used with the TrackPoint. This model does not have a TrackPoint, so it doesn't have those markings on it. OK, fine. My issue however is the overal level of force/ergonomics needed to activate this haptic pad are not great. The X1C 13 pad is noticeably better to use, and feels 'softer' or just plain more ergonomic to use. Andrew Marc Jacob (the ThinkPad review guy, love him or hate him) also called this out, but to me this was almost worse than the keyboard. I could feel myself getting soreness in my hand from using it for any moderate length of time.
3. Design & Material choice. OK, I listed material choice as a pro in the build quality section, and indeed the all-metal chassis is great, but it's not the soft-touch material we know on the ThinkPads. There is something cold and clinical about the feel of interacting with this machine, including the palm rest area, 'sharpness' of it's tapered bottom cover, the thin lid, etc. I can't quite place it, but it's overall feeling more about looking nice than feeling nice. Again, super premium look. You can tell Lenovo is aiming at the MacBook crowd, and it's a well-placed shot. To me, this doesn't make it nicer to work on though, and I much prefer the traditional ThinkPad finish here. Colour isn't the issue, it's the finish.

Verdict & Overall rating: 9/10
Despite me not absolutely 'loving it', and not believing it should be called a ThinkPad, this is still a fantastic machine by any measure. I think it just needs to be rebranded.

It's living a bit of a strange identity/branding crisis whereby Lenovo recognizes that the ThinkPad X-series is their recognized top-of-the-line brand in their laptop lineup, and thus are using that branding to position this machine as a halo product. I get it. But it's not a ThinkPad.

What it is, is a fantastic multimedia laptop. It feels more 'prosumer' or enthusiast-focused however, than something for professionals who would go for a P14/16 or P1, or an X1 Carbon 14 w/ 358H in its place, and loses that signature 'chuckable' factor of a ThinkPad. I think if I needed one laptop for work and play, the X9 fits the bill, but if your balance is more than 60/40 in the work direction, I'd still recommend the X1 Carbon or another ThinkPad over it, personally.

Anyway, thanks for reading my $0.02.
