Should I clean before selling?

I’m wanting to sell my collection soon so I can buy some Christmas presents and I have a couple albums that are going for $150+ as well as some more mid-range vinyl. My question is if I should clean them before shipping. I’m worried that it may do more harm than good, especially for the ones that I’ve only played once or twice.

Arm seems too heavy for certain side of a record?

I’m sorry I’m not welll versed in any jargon (or anything pertaining to record players and such) for this, however I’ve recently noticed an issue for only one side of only one of my records. When I lower the arm onto it, it slows the turning of the record to a stop, but the table beneath continues to turn and scratch the underside of the record. It acts as if the arm is too heavy, slowing it down, but the table beneath continues fine. Like I said, I tried other records and even the other side of this one and they’re all fine, it’s just this one side. I’ve also played this one before without issue, it just began happening all of a sudden. Can anyone pinpoint a reason for this? I don’t want to keep trying it and scratch the hell out of it. Thank you guys much love

Things I’ve learned from buying hundreds of records online. Primarily discogs and eBay.

Ideally, I prefer buying records in local record shops, but I live in Anchorage, Alaska so we only really have one small record shop. Though they are great; they usually do not carry the harder to find albums I seek.

As someone who has ordered hundreds of records online, here is what I’ve learned:

-I save/bookmark previous sellers I bought from that did great job and were efficient. I’m more likely to buy from them again

-Always message and ask the online shop to pack outside of the cover to avoid seam splits

-I usually expect 1 out of 5 LPs to have insufficient packaging now to lower my expectations.

-Ask the seller if they can add extra reinforcements / extra stiffeners

-Sellers who use whiplash mailers are godsend

-I’m always willing to pay the seller extra $2 in shipping for better/sturdier packaging than saving on shipping. It saves both of our time and relieves anxieties.

-For more expensive items, I try to correspond with them first before purchasing.

-Check to see when they last sold an item by checking their most recent customer reviews. If they don’t have anything from the last 5 months or so, try to hit them up and see if their selling account is even active.

-It you are buying anything that’s $150+, I usually try to ask if they can ship it via DHL or priority mail on my expense.

-Be polite to sellers and make their experience as smooth on their ends as you expect yours to be

-Some sellers don’t care about the condition you receive the records anymore once they sell it to you. No matter how much they cared for that record previously. I learned the hard way that some of them just don’t care lmao

-Ask for photos even if they graded it as NM or VG+ coz I learned that each seller as their own standards

-Since I’m in the US, I try to mostly buy specific copies if it’s from a US seller. This saves time, customs clearance and possible customs fees.

-Japanese sellers are some of the best at packaging and they pick premium shipping services.

-Usually, packages from the UK use horrible and flimsily mailers. Some sellers are great if you message them ahead of time.

-Flimsy mailers with “fragile” stickers slapped on them do not protect the LPs 100%

-Buying one or two extra records from one shop saves money and usually protects the other almbuns by being sandwiched

-eBay is a great alternative if you want photos already presented. I’ve actually had better experience buying records from eBay than discogs, honestly.

-Ask for photos to see if it’s even the right pressing

Discogs is a shit show these days....RANT

Don't get me wrong, it is a wonderful tool for researching and cataloguing albums and pressings. But as a market place, it's gotten insufferably shitty. Too many scammers. Still fairly unregulated in those regards in spite of whatever steps they taken to get to filter them out and get rid of them. The seller fees have caused many sellers to charge stupid prices for standard media mail to recoup losses. Sorry, I ain't paying ten dollars to have an album shipped to me standard Media Mail from 1 state over when I know you paid less than 5 dollars to the post office. Beyond that all the price metrics are driven by arbitrary inflation and greed. I'm sorry but a wide release/ new release album isn't instantly worth triple digits because it sells out at retail or goes out of print for just a couple of months. Also, a used repress of a widely available album should not cost the same or more than a new sealed copy. Even if it's only been played and handled once....There should be some sort of depreciation of at least 5-10 bucks the moment it's been opened and played. Anyways just a rant. If there were ever a time for something similar and better to replace it now would be time...

PSA/Opinion: Don't buy from Newbury Comics

**TLDR: Newbury Comics (both in store and online) are egregiously greedy sellers. The only way they'll stop is if we stop buying from them.**

I grew up in New England with Newbury Comics, and they used to be really great. The only bad thing I could say about them was that they didn't give much for trade-ins - but they constantly offered cool promos like a free glass with purchase of a new release, their clearance section wasn't half bad, and the sales were actually sales.

Since they moved into malls - but especially since the vinyl boom really took off, they've become notoriously greedy, overcharging on everything from new releases to exclusives to standard fare widely available elsewhere.

I'm more than willing to support local record stores if there's a little bit of a premium to shop there, but I can't stay silent when...

* Newbury charges nearly double or MORE than double for things like Coldplay ($20 standard, $40 in store) and Taylor Swift ($25 standard, $40 in store) records. These are two mainstream examples but one look in store and you see markups between 50%-100% on nearly everything.

* Newbury releases often sub-par exclusives for a minimum of $45 (and then jacks the price up even further as their supply gets lower).

* They treat their website (newburycomics.com) as a completely separate entity - aka they don't honor their own website's prices in store.

* Their website doesn't offer free shipping until $100.

* Their clearance section in store has nearly nothing for less than $20.

Other, smaller brick and mortar stores have great customer service, fair prices, and a stellar online experience (go support Plaid Room, Monster, 1234 Go, list other great businesses that our community can support in the comments!).

I've reached out to Newbury Comics HQ on multiple occasions over the past couple of years about many of these issues and have heard nothing back - ultimately it comes down to that they can set whatever price they want as a private business.

I urge the vinyl community: please do not shop at Newbury Comics (either in store, or online) until they get the message and change their ways. Support other small businesses, or buy records directly from the band/label. Thanks for reading, y'all.
