YSK that couples who live together for two years in Australia are considered De Facto Married with the same rights and responsibilities as a licensed wedding. In a split child custody and ALL assets acquired during the relationship start at a 50-50% division, unless you want a hard legal battle.

Why YSK

If you are emigrating to Australia, relationship and family laws are very different to many nations.

Australia is a 'No Fault Divorce' nation. Both heterosexual and homosexual couples are covered by defecto and licenced-marriage law. Pre-nups, and one party trying to protect their financial assets gained during a relationship from the other partner, pretty much aren't legal in Australia.

https://www.fcfcoa.gov.au/fl/pubs/defacto

It is the position of the courts that adults stay in a relationship of equals. If you aren't getting any value, whether that is emotional support, sexual or romantic support, practical support, organisational, parental or maintenance and cleaning support, or monetary support, then you wouldn't have chosen to remain in the relationship. The intangible benefits created by being in a relationship are weighted as equal to any financial income and assets brought to the relationship by either partner.

The courts aren't going to veer from a 50-50% split of assets if one person cheated or made more money during the relationship. The only consideration will be if one person has greater or lesser custody of the children, or a very diminished income with which to support their children, at which point maintenance payments come into play. The court will want stable schooling for the children, and parents may be ordered to move no further than a commutable distance from their child's school. Otherwise a parent may give up custody of their children during the school year, and move where the parent pleases, at the cost of paying the lion's share of child maintenance.

TL;DR from a legal standpoint in Australia, heterosexual and homosexual couples who move in together automatically start co-owning their income, superannuation (pension savings) and new assets after two years together. Mothers are still privileged above fathers when it comes to parental leave from work (sorry about that), but not during a relationship split, at which point the courts will try to favour the best interests of the children.

LPT: If you know you will be late for a meeting (personal or professional), it’s always better to inform the person in advance than trying to make it on time.

Majority of the people, upon realizing that they will be late for a meeting, try really hard to haste and make it in time. If you have already realized that you will be late, the likelihood of you being on time by asking a few things in haste is extremely low whereas the likelihood of you doing something utterly stupid, like driving recklessly, being mad at someone or neglecting something important in the spur of the moment is really high. This could not just be harmful to you but unsafe for others too who have nothing to do with your situation.

On the other hand, if/when you call up a person in advance and inform them that you will be late and then actually make it by the new time, this results in - 1. The other person respecting you for respecting their time and being clear on expectations 2. You coming across as an aware and empathetic person who respects timeline instead of a careless person always running late and trying to catch up

Simplest life hack ever. Baking and using a box of pre-mixed ingredients where you just add liquid and eggs? Add an extra egg to it. It will come out extra moist.

This works with everything I've ever tried, cake mix, cookie mix, brownies, corn bread etc etc. Just add an extra egg to make it extra moist and a little more dense, and follow the rest of the directions and ingredients as you normally would. You can also do this with most other recipes as well for the same effect. The extra fat from the yolk helps to keep things moist and delicious. Happy holidays!

YSK, a lot of small restaurants (especially cultural restaurants) that are open on holidays aren’t open cause they don’t celebrate the holidays, they’re just trying to survive.

This one’s going to be kinda lame. But it hits home for me.
Why YSK: behind most mom and pop family restaurants whether it be Asian restaurants, Mexican, American etc; is a family that doesn’t want to open on holidays. Behind those mom and pop shops, are usually kids wishing their family could get together for a holiday for once.

I bring this up because my family once had a restaurant; And on one Thanksgiving day, instead of having our own family dinner we had to open the restaurant. A lady came in for a catering order and I heard her tell her husband “oh don’t worry; these people don’t celebrate thanksgiving”. Now, she wasn’t being racist; she was just ignorant to our culture.

Of course we celebrate American holidays. But many family restaurants open cause it’s survival. We didn’t have a “Make up” day for Thanksgiving. We just had to deal with it. At home are the kids watching tv sitcoms of thanksgiving specials, living vicariously. While mom and dad are trying to provide.

So if you do visit a family restaurant this Thanksgiving, please be extra kind.

LPT: If frying your turkey, TURN OFF the fire prior to dipping.

Once you’ve brought the oil to heat, RIGHT before you put in the turkey, turn OFF the gas/fire. So even if you do get spills or splashing, nothing will ignite and you’ll have time to clean up and wipe down before turning the fire back on.

Extra:

- Keep at least 20ft away from all structures (lawn/trees included).

- To know the fill line, first fill it with water, then put in turkey, remove, and mark the fill line, then remove the water, DRY the bird, and you know how high to add the oil.

But if you want a better LPT: SMOKE the turkey instead, way better.

YSK, if you (or your kids) ever have a health class in high school and some group comes to give an anti-drug speech that is named Narconon, realize that it's all bullshit and a scam run to introduce kids to Scientology at a young age.

Years back when I was in junior high, our Health class had speakers from an anti-drug Narconon group come to class. In this talk, they used an accepted anti-drug message to try and tell us blatant lies about drugs and sprinkle in gateway terms used in Scientology. Throughout the talk, they would talk about Dianetics and tell us the bullshit that "drugs are stored in our fat". They also tried to convince us that "when drugs are released from our fat that causes flashbacks", which is a complete lie. These are flat out lies. Oddly, there were casual mentions of the book, Dianetics and certain "principles". Dianetics is a Scientology book. This whole talk was nothing more than a grooming attempt into Scientology concepts to familiarize kids with the ideas at a young age, shrouding hidden terms in to an accepted anti-drug message. Their sneaky attempt at planting those thoughts (lies) in our heads so that we would be more accepting of them when we hear them later on in life. Trying to make a gateway into Scientology.

A big surprise to me was when I noticed at health fairs later on when I was in college and at street fairs, there would be anti-drug groups set up in tents with Dianetics books laid out. Talking to them, they would sprinkle in the same things from my junior high school class in their conversation. Their goal was to get people to pick up the Dianetics book, which is nothing more than Scientology indoctrination material masquerading as a self-help book.

Those Scientology guys are just an insidious operation to plant those ideas in your head so that when you hear them again after several years, you think "oh, yeah, I think I remember hearing that before, OK." And so that you are positively inclined to concepts that are mentioned and are associated with the ones you've already heard, being more amenable to Scientology. It's all about trying to indoctrinate people into that scam known as Scientology. Fucking bastards.

By the way, if you ever go to a chiropractor's office and you see Dianetics books and Scientology pamphlets laid out with no other reading material but those, leave quickly.

The name of the group is Narconon. Beware if those bastards come to speak at your school or your kid's school.

Why YSK: The whole approach of Scientology to get people to join is to plant concepts associated with a positive and accepted message in people's heads time after time after time (over many years). This is so that when people are grown up, they will be accepting of the concepts in Scientology, join their "church". Once they have joined, then the church can siphon money from them as they pay thousands for higher levels of training.

It's a total scam posing as a religion.

Do you dread phone calls with family because they last two hours but you feel guilty about it?

That used to be me. Solved it by calling them more frequently but stating at the outset that I only had a few minutes but wanted to check in. I'd usually call once every week or two during my morning commute. It actually improved the call quality because it became more conversational. I could talk about work or that dumb driver, tell them about my plans for the weekend or the recipe i was going to try out, or ask how the Dr appt went or talk about football. Suggest a movie. Ask what they are doing this week. Then next week ask how it went. The calls have more continuity and Its really easy to jabber for 10 min and then there isn't any time for awkwardness or the topics you prefer to avoid. When I get to work, I gotta go, no weirdness ending the call. Plus, they know we'll talk again soon.

It's great. They feel, and are, a more regular part of my life. If I get busy and don't call for a month, no guilt because I know I've been calling regularly. I get to know more about what they are actually doing than if they used me as a sounding board for grievances, and they get to know about the little things in my life. It's just a much more normal conversation and improves your relationship immensely. Plus no more rolling your eyes at your spouse because you're stuck on an endless call.
