Want to be safe and get a colon screening prior to when you're 45? Lie and say you have a family history.

So my buddy who is 41 for colon cancer. I went to the doctor to schedule a colonoscopy and my doctor asked if i had a family history, i replied, "no." She told me my insurance probably wouldn't cover it then. I asked if we could just write that i do have a family history, and she said, "Sure. So who in your family has a history?" I replied, "My Grandpaaa..." She said, "perfect" and i was off to getting myself screened and paid for my our dumbass American health insurance.

Get yourself checked people. They aren't going to ask for proof.

LPT: If you feel overwhelmed, write a “not doing” list before your to-do list

When I’m stressed, my brain keeps adding tasks like it’s trying to win an award for “most productive burnout.”

What helped me more than productivity apps was writing a short “not doing today” list. Not fixing everything. Not answering non-urgent messages. Not reorganizing my whole life at 11pm.

It sounds simple, but it forces you to protect your energy instead of just stacking obligations.

Your workload doesn’t grow because you’re incapable. It grows because you don’t set limits.

Has anyone else tried something similar?

Flies on the front door porch area

We have a west facing front door. In late afternoons, we have a bunch of flies ( I think they are common green bottle flies or blowflies) congregating, waiting for the front door to open to enter our house. We have tried putting plants (lavender, peppermint) which are supposed to repel flies without any impact. I have also sprayed peppermint oil in the front porch that also didn’t work. Any suggestions to get rid of the flies would be greatly appreciated.

YSK about the "Illusion of Competence": watching someone explain something makes you think YOU understand it, even when you don't

Why YSK:
Because most modern every day learning is built on passive consumption. YouTube, podcasts, audiobooks, lectures.
I even overheard a guy recently saying "he doesn't read books, he listens to podcasts".

The entire system rewards watching and listening, not doing and recalling.
If you've ever re-read a textbook chapter three times and still couldn't answer questions about it, this is why.
Re-reading feels productive because the words look familiar. But familiarity is not understanding.

The fix is called "retrieval practice".
Forcing yourself to pull information from memory instead of just recognizing it.
Some of the easiest examples:

1. Close the book and write what you remember
After reading or watching something, put it away and try to reproduce the key ideas from memory. The gaps you find are exactly what you need to study.

2. The Feynman Method:
Try to explain the concept as if you're teaching it to someone with no background. Where you get stuck is where your understanding has gaps. Named after physicist Richard Feynman who believed that if you can't explain something simply, you don't really understand it.

Source: https://pressbooks.pub/illuminated/chapter/illusion-of-competence/

Note: The topic is super complex and a reddit post would be too much to cover it all.
I personally like the "Illusion of Competence" approach a lot because it makes it tangible in every day scenarios.

YSK that CBD vapes are more harmful to the lungs than nicotine vapes

CBD (cannabidiol) is an ingredient derived from cannabis that is widely used to treat pain and anxiety.

Why YSK: Recently CBD vape products have been popping up and are marketed as a ‘healthier’ alternative for those who want to quit vaping nicotine.

However, recent studies like this one have found that CBD vapes may actually be *more* harmful to lung tissue compared to nicotine vapes. CBD aerosols “resulted in greater inflammatory changes, more severe lung damage and higher oxidative stress compared with nicotine.”

So, if you are trying to quit vaping for health reasons, switching to CBD vapes will likely not be easier on your lungs.

LPT: Be extra careful of how you treat people during transitions in their life. The memories they form during these times tend to be longer-lived and more meaningful.

Life can be a blur and it's easy to forget most day-to-day interactions. A harmless crabby comment or (unfortunately) a thoughtful gesture can fade from memory by the end of the week (or even the end of the day).

It's different when someone is under the stress of a life transition. We tend to remember unusual events more; we also tend to remember stressful events more. When you combine the two of those, you have a recipe for a lifelong memory. This is true whether the event was something good, like a wedding, or something bad, like a death in the family.

I've noticed this repeatedly and other have said it's the same for them. That unkind remark following the death of a loved one? I don't mean to hold on to it. It's not that I'm carrying a grudge. But I remember. For many of these memories, it's been a long time, so I suspect I'll always remember. But it's the same for those who extended a kindness during a transition. I'll never forget those, either.

It's always good to be a kind, thoughtful human but, if you want to protect and nurture your relationships even more, be more careful than usual during those times that make memories that last forever.

LPT: Activate two-step authentication on your primary accounts before you need it

Many people only strengthen their account security after experiencing a problem. Enabling two-step verification adds an extra layer of protection, making unauthorized access more difficult, even if your password is leaked.

Setting it up takes just a few minutes and can prevent data loss, account lockouts, or future complications.

It's a simple preventative measure that's often overlooked until it's too late.

Small tasks explode because there is no finish line. I set one before I start.

School: I will do 20 minutes of reading, then write 3 bullets, then stop.

LPT: Keep a running journal of your work accomplishments, and ideas. Your future self will thank you.

I’ve started doing this a few years ago and it’s been great. Whenever something good happens at work like finished a challenging project, got praise from a manager or a co-worker, came up with an idea, solved a tricky problem, basically made an impact at work: I write it down with the date it happened.

Why this helps:

Performance reviews \- Instead of trying to remember what you did all year, you have concrete examples ready to go through and select what you want to use. Makes self-evaluations much easier.

Resume updates \- When you need to update your resume, you’re not trying to remember your accomplishments and the impact you had at work from memory. You have specific metrics and achievements already documented.

Job interviews \- Perfect source material for those “tell me about a time when…” questions.

Bad days \- When work feels frustrating or you’re doubting yourself, scrolling through your wins reminds you that you’re actually pretty competent.

Salary negotiations \- Nothing backs up a raise request like a list of concrete value you’ve delivered.

It only takes like 2 minutes when something happens. I used a simple note-taking app, but even a Google Doc or paper notebook work fine. The key is just capturing it while it’s fresh otherwise you’ll forget to add it or forget it altogether.
