Kernel Disable the proximity sensor or alter it in the kernel level
I got a Pixel 4a 5G (bramble) currently running PixelBuilds rom with Android 14. My proximity sensor seems to be misaligned or something happened to it which lead to slowly becoming unreliable and now completely incorrect and stuck at 0cm reading. I need to disable it from the kernel level.
Yes, I have spent enough time to confirm that it's an hardware defect which require repairs but because of the risk to the display and rare parts while repairing, I decide not to do. Why kernel level? I a...

Hi all,
I've recently reached 50K installed about 2 days ago and I expected the numbers to be updated yesterday. But I've checked but nothing changed.

What are the alternatives to App Center Distribution for Android devices without Google accounts?
Context:
I’m an Android engineer at a logistics company, and we manage around 50 Android devices that don’t have Google accounts. Multiple workers share these devices during their shifts, and we want to avoid the hassle of managing Google accounts, which can sometimes get signed out and disrupt workflow.
We’ve been using App Center Distribution to manage our Android app updates because it doesn’t require any setup on the devices—just the SDK, which prompts users to update the app. Howeve...

Api Authentication and Clean Architecture
Hi guys, I'm learning android development and in particular I'm trying to follow Architecture best practices and Modern Android Development.
I would like to know what's in your opinion the best way of handling what I think is a common requirement for mobile applications: authentication of apis through an access token.
First of all how there is the need of persisting the token(s). For semplicity let's assume I will use SharedPreferences (it's not relevant for the sake of the example). From my u...

Best book for an experienced dev new to Android
I'm almost completely new to Android and Kotlin, but an experienced (decades) developer in C++ for embedded systems, and some GUI development with QtCreator and similar tools. I've written some Java in the distant past, but it seems like Kotlin is the way to go now.
I've installed Android Studio and had a play: there is a lot going on, with numerous resources and other files which I didn't immediately grasp. The form designer seemed relatively straightforward but I'm embarrassed to say I was n...

Those of you who have given Android interviews recently(in the last 6 months or ongoing), what gets asked now?
So I'm(almost 4 yrs exp in Android) preparing currently and haven't interviewed in like 1.5 yrs anywhere so I'm a bit clueless if I'm in the direction with my preparation. I'm currently revising theoretical concepts that I had forgotten about (being away from work for 6 months, I'm too nervous now)
I have a few questions:
1. how much of theory gets asked in interviews now?
2. Should i prioritise working on a project to practice coding more?

Does anyone have more details on this?

As an Android dev, is learning iOS development a good ROI longterm?
At my job, they are offering android and ios developers to learn their OS counterparts, as an initiative to allow for more developers that can take on projects from either side.
As a young Android developer, I'm wondering if it is a good career decision to start meddling with iOS development as well? Or it be better to give 100% of my focus to Android development?
Of course it's never a bad idea to learn new skills, and get some insight on how iOS development works. But is the learning curve...

Enabling/Disabling device frame in the Emulator can cause a black bar at the top of the app.
I just tested some very weird behavior and I had a black bar appear at the top of the emulator that was pushing my screen content offscreen. Editing emulator settings to include the device frame again fixed that. Would have been nice to know before wasting hours trying to set fullscreen flags & camera-notch-cutouts.
There may be something else i'm missing; idk its kinda impossible to tell. Anybody here experience something similar in the past?...

What's best practice for declaring gradle plugins?
I'm trying to learn more about Gradle.
I've noticed in the project level build.gradle, you typically have plugins declared but not applied to the root (or else it will apply the plugin to all other modules).
```
// Root build.gradle
plugins {
id("some.plugin") version "1.0.0" apply false
}
```
Then in your module level build.gradle, you can apply plugins that was declared in the root, without having to declare the version.
```
// Module build.gradle
plugins {
id("some.plugin")
}
