Instead of doom-scrolling job boards, looking to contribute to open source
Since the job search is kinda going off the rails, I’m looking to put my time into something useful — open-source contributions.
I’m a Kotlin-first Android dev fresh grad . Started as an intern, worked contract/remote, shipped multiple production apps — one scaled to 100k+ downloads. I’ve spent a lot of time fixing crashes, handling lifecycle/process-death issues, and cleaning up architecture.
Tech I’m comfortable with:
Jetpack Compose
MVVM / MVI
Coroutines & Flow

Question about creating a developer account.
I'm wanting to create a dev account but I read somewhere that I have to use a credit card for the $25 fee. I don't have a credit card but my SO does. Can I use theirs or does it have to be mine?...

Day 38 of building my app as a non-developer
I've been sharing my journey here on Reddit as "build in public" concept.
Today was full of fixing bugs and questioning reality 😅. Sometimes, you feel that AI coding models only want to use the max tokens for the least effort.
My app is a screen and blocker app with a twist. Instead of a meaningless pop-up that appears every time you open an app, you now see a Quran verse to read.

Which native UI toolkit do you use for Android?
I’ve been getting back into Android development after \~5-6 years. I’ve been using Claude Opus to copy a SwiftUI app to Android Jetpack Compose, and it made me think of how the old XML based layouts are not needed anymore.
So how many of you are still using the XML based View system vs Jetpack Compose?

Laptop problems
I finally got a laptop (Acer Chromebook) and according to my research on the internet, it's specs are TRASH for native android development using Android Studio mainly because of the Android Emulator.
My questions:
1. Is there a way I can still make android apps on it because I have the ambition and it's the only thing I got.
2. I have an Android phone. Will it save performance if I don't use the emulator?
3. Is an Acer Chromebook that bad?

2025 grad Android dev feeling stuck should I switch to backend or rethink my perspective?
I am a 2025 graduate who started as an Android intern at a product company and recently converted to full time. After working on native Android for a while, I m starting to feel there is limited long-term growth, especially since mobile devs in my org dont get any backend exposure.
I am thinking about shifting to backend or full-stack, but I’m confused — is my perspective wrong, or is this a valid concern early in my career? How do people usually make this transition? Any advice would really hel...

How to encrypt all media in Internal Storage?
Hey folks,
I saw an app designed for content creators who want to share their work (videos, music, and other files). Creators can enable a setting called "disallow save to local," which means subscribers can't save files to local storage, let alone screenshots or screen recordings. However, after I carefully played some of the videos, I found that they were all saved intact in --> Internal Storage/Android/com.app.id/files. So, anyone could pirate the content and distribute it. This applies to a...

Adaptive screen XML
I have about 30 XML screens, and I want to make them portrait-only on Android 16 for devices larger than 600dp, like tablets. Android 16 doesn’t force the user into a specific orientation, so I want to implement this in clean code in one place without repeating code

How do i understand the chat functionality architecture?
My friends have an iOS app that is already completed with a chat functionality and I'm porting it over to Android. I'm 90% done with the app witth the last major hurdle being chat messaging and notifications.
Here are some of the high-level architechure questions i have. I'd ask the developer of the iOS app, but he has ghosted everyone. Hopefully these aren't dumb project-specific questions that can't be answered.

Would you ever download an app like that?
Hi everyone, I'm developing a small web project to convert as an iOS and Android app to download from the stores. Users on the main screen type a sentence to describe their mood. A complex algorithm matches them into rooms with people who are going through similar emotions. Rooms are created when at least two people resonate, and welcome up to a maximum of 6 people. They close automatically once everyone is out. No message is kept. No feed, no followers, no social pressure to look beautiful. Jus...

Redmi 9 keeps hanging/freezing frequently – need help
Hi everyone,
I’m using a **Redmi 9** and it has started **hanging/freezing very frequently**. Sometimes the screen gets stuck, apps lag badly, and I have to restart the phone to use it normally again.
Things I’ve already tried:
* Restarting the phone
* Clearing app cache
* Deleting some files to free storage
Still, the problem keeps coming back, especially while using apps like Reddit, Chrome, or Instagram.
Has anyone else faced this issue with Redmi 9?
Is this a **software (MIUI) proble...

Bug story Vibration wouldn’t stop , even after app was closed + phone restarted
Was traveling recently and installed a speed-tracking app to monitor my train’s movement. It worked surprisingly well , showed real-time speed and even triggered vibration alerts when the speed changed. Smart UX, I thought.
But here’s the weird part: Even after I closed the app , and restarted my phone — the vibration kept going. Only fix? Uninstalling the app.
This kind of bug won’t show up in an emulator. It’s a reminder that:
Device-level behavior matters

I built a simple launcher for my parents and unexpectedly, many others started loving it too❤️🩹
A few weeks ago, I made a small launcher for my parents. They often found their phones overwhelming too many apps, gestures, and pop-ups. I wanted to give them something peaceful and clutter-free.
After sharing it with a few people, I was surprised to see others (especially seniors and minimalists) finding it helpful too. It made me realize how Android’s openness lets anyone tailor the experience for completely different needs from power users to parents who just want to call or text.
If any...
