How American Dad saved my life when I was 17.
When I was 17 it was the lowest period of my life. In short, I tried to take my own life and ended up in the er and had to be monitored for several days before I was medically cleared and sent to the inpatient psych unit.
During that time I was basically still very upset that I was still alive, plus hooked up to a lot of things so I couldn’t really do anything.
I had a tv in my room. I remember there was an American Dad marathon going on during this time. I had seen bits and pieces of the show previously but never really sat down to watch it.
Yet I’ll never forget how the episodes of American Dad made me laugh and feel joy at a time where I thought all joy was gone. That’s basically all I did was watch American Dad.
American Dad taught me that there is purpose in life, even if some silly cartoon is what kept me going and made me smile.
After being medically cleared and later released from the psych hospital, I watched the entire show from the beginning. I remember that I was still depressed and told myself that I’ll stay alive until I finish American Dad completely…yet after I finished all the episodes at the time I had found other reasons to stay and continue living as well.
American Dad kept me going just long enough to find more purpose and joy in my life. For that I’m forever grateful for American Dad. It gave me not just joy but a community of amazing people and reasons to keep going.
I am 20 now and I’m a junior in university, have a decent job, good friends, and so much more going for me. I wouldn’t have any of this right now if American Dad didn’t give me a reason to keep going in life. It may seem like a silly reason to stay alive, but to me it meant so much. I’ll forever love American Dad now.
Edit- wow I’m in tears reading all of these comments. I thought I was the only one who American Dad has helped in bad times like this, I actually have no words.
I wasn’t sure at all if this should have been posted here since I haven’t seen any other posts similar to this before, I’m glad I did post it though. I’m glad that there’s such an amazing community of people in this sub who are supportive and can relate. This is truly the best fandom without a doubt.

29 years ago today, Bart rented a car with a phony driver's license and drove Milhouse, Martin, and Nelson to a wig outlet in Knoxville and the car got crushed and they're out of money and they can't get home and Bart's working as a courier and just came back from Hong Kong!
