In 1812, following the battle of Krasny, Marshal Ney and 3000 men were cut off by 60,000 Russians. After trying to force their lines, they crossed the Dniepr river and covered 90 km of open ground, surrounded by cossacks and rejecting 3 offers to surrender. 800 men rejoined the army.
