Being pirate is a family business y'all
My father took me to sail the seven seas before I even understand that you can spend money in exchange for goods and services. From Windows to movies we watched together.
I learned how to download music to my mp3 player using P2P before I turned 10 (and sometimes accidentally downloaded porn lol)
When my baby brother was born (we have more than 12 years age difference) I have wondered how to teach him this "art" . Turned out I don't need to. He got himself into Minecraft and already learned all things about playing cracked game on the internet. He torrents (and seeds!) more files than me.
When I eventually bought him the legit Minecraft (same reason I bought Skyrim, the game meant so much for me that they can take my money, and also modding), he express his distaste towards the market place and that he is not going to spend that much money just for a skin. So he reverse engineered those skins on Photoshop (cracked) and made them himself lmao

Anyone else think Microsoft still benefits from people pirating Windows?
I was thinking about how common it is to pirate Windows, especially in countries where paying full price just isn't realistic. I think all the PCs/laptops I ever got had a pirated or at least "shared" version of Windows up until recently. And honestly, I can think of how Microsoft lowkey benefits from it.
By letting people use Windows (cracked or not), they keep users locked into their ecosystem, so even if they're not making money off the OS right away, they still win long-term through app sales, OneDrive, Office, etc. It also keeps Windows as the "default" OS worldwide.
They could easily crack down harder, but they don't seem to. Even if it's not piracy but buying keys, I just got one from nodekeys for under 20 bucks, so even people who don't want to pirate are definitely not paying the official full price. Not for their personal computers, at least. What do you think?

US Trade Rep (USTR) publishes every year basically a directory of the world's best piracy websites
Every year The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) releases the findings of its examination of worldwide piracy as its yearly "Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy (aka the Notorious Markets List)".
So they basically tell people these are the best piracy websites in the world. The 2024 list can be found here.pdf).

Just got reminded why I pirate
I recently got an MSI Claw. Been setting it up over the last week and trying out games at home. Today was the first time I found actual use for it.
So there I am, waiting outside the airport, waiting to pick up someone. It seems they'll take another half an hour. So I take out my claw and fire up Ender Lillies, the game I had been playing.
But the game doesn't start. Instead, I see an Epic games window telling me I'm offline and I need an internet connection to start the game.
I thought there would be a one-off option to start in offline mode, but I wasn't even logged in to Epic games anymore. So couldn't access my library at all.
This wouldn't have been an issue if I had a pirated version installed. So I suffered for having acquired the game legally. The only solace was that I had received the game for free on Epic, so I hadn't paid. But this would have been no different had I paid for the game.
As someone said, piracy is a service issue and not a pricing issue.

Help me set up easy German streaming for my depressed roommate
My roommate has severe depression, and I’m trying to make life easier for her with simple access to movies and shows she loves. I’m a broke student with no time to dive deep into tech stuff or buy hardware.
I have set up a Fire TV Stick with Stremio + Torrentio + Real Debrid, which works, but most content is in English, and she needs German. She’s into stuff like „Die wilden Hühner“ movies, or series like „Sex and the City“, „Spongebob“, "Wheel of Time" – all in German.
Is there an easy way to tweak Stremio for this, or another simple solution? I can’t afford pricey subscriptions and need something I can set up once so she can use it on her own.
