I mean it hasn't been clarified so there's no factual answer as to what was planned for the airdrop, which was again bad communcation around that topic. The original article could have been more insightful but I don't recall them being specific and after Ed mentioning that there will be a reward for current veRelay holders in a form of airdrop (not the accumulated fees) I'd assume that there's a nother one that has been left out now

It was still fees. There is a fee for using the bridge, paid in whatever token you were bridging. I believe the original intention was to distribute those tokens, but frankly you would end up with loads of dust in your wallet.
