Is ‘Long Vax Syndrome’ A Rare Covid-19 Vaccine Side Effect? Here’s What’s Known
Long Covid has long been a problem that has not gotten enough attention throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. And now researchers are longing to better understand “Long Vax Syndrome,” a rare condition in which people’s immune systems may be overreacting to the Covid-19 vaccine. It’s being called “Long Vax” not because they’ve gotten vaccinated with a particularly long needle but because the symptoms have resembled long Covid. This has included headaches, major fatigue, blood pressure issues and abnormal heart rates that have lasted days, weeks and potentially even longer. The long and short it, though, is that the number of reported “Long Vax” cases have still been far, far, far, far fewer than the number of reported long Covid cases. Nevertheless, any potential real side effect of Covid-19 deserves a long, hard look by real scientists who really understand this area.
It’s been tough to study this syndrome in large part because the number of reported cases has been so low to date and there hasn’t exactly been an abundance of funding and support for such work. A pre-print posted on medRxiv back on May 17, 2022, did describe what happened to 23 patients who had reported seemingly nerve-related symptoms that began within a month of getting vaccinated against Covid-19. The patients ranged in age from 27 to 71 years with the median age being 40 years. All but two were women. None of them had any evidence of previous neurological illnesses.
However, after getting vaccinated, all 23 experienced funny sensations—funny as in pins and needles and not ha-ha funny—that were quite severe on their faces or limbs. Nearly, two-thirds (61%) had experienced POTS, as well as heat intolerance and irregular heartbeats. Now, in this case, POTS doesn’t refer to the cookware as most people have experienced cookware at some point. Instead, POTS here stands for postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. This is a medicalese way of saying abnormal drops in blood pressure and lightheadedness (hence the word orthostatic) and increases in your heart rate (hence the word tachycardia) when going from you go from a lying position (meaning what you might do on a bed rather than what some politicians do a lot) to a standing one (hence the word postural).
Testing of 12 of these patients confirmed the presence of POTS in six of them. At the same time, the research team found that seven of the patients actually had reduced sweat production in their limbs. So what is the possible connection between POTS and not being able to sweat as much? Well, you could say the nerve of such findings.
The research team led by Farinaz Safavi, M.D., Ph.D. and Avindra Nath, M.D., from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke decided to put some skin in the game, so to speak, and take samples of skin from the lower legs of 16 of these patients. These biopsies revealed changes in and around the nerves of some of these patients, including 19% having abnormal swelling of their nerve axons. There was also quite a reaction in some cases. Some of these biopsies also showed collections of complement C4d—a chemical produced when the immune system reacts to something—in the cells lining blood vessels. All in all, over half (52%) of the patients had objective evidence of what’s called small-fiber peripheral neuropathy.
So, it looked like the immune system may have been generating a reaction against nerve cells in the patients’ bodies, causing inflammation...

Leaked Memo Shows Mayo Clinic Doubles Down On Censorship
Reports this week expose Mayo Clinic as “doubling down” on speech restrictions it previously chose to impose affecting Dr. Michael Joyner.
The information comes from an internal memo sent to Mayo Clinic College of Medical Science, which is interpreted as sticking to a policy of preventing this medical organization’s members from speaking freely.
Previously, Joyner, a professor, was punished for his public statements related to his research, concerning public health, including topics such as Covid, and transgenderism and, in general, making comments that were construed as being against some government policies, that is, something that was well within his right to do.
But Mayo Clinic took the stance that what was more important, and takes precedence was for Joyner to toe the line – i.e., stick to “prescribed messaging” and rather than focus on his medical expertise, worry more ardently about the clinic’s chosen “brand” and (ideological?) standing it derives from that.
...One of the key points of the controversy is that the college has made a “promise” to its teachers and students of the right to free speech – which clearly wasn’t exercised when Joyner got suspended, and had a gag-order placed on him.
In the memo, Gazelka fairly brazenly advises college leadership to keep saying that Mayo Clinic continues to be “fully committed to academic freedom and expression.” Joyner, who is still banned from talking to reporters without the college’s permission, might be surprised to learn this.

As the CDC’s Director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, concludes her controversial tenure, her revelations about the agency’s decision to work hand in glove with the media to shape public opinion raise alarming questions about government overreach and the erosion of free speech.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Dr. Walensky did not mince words about her agency’s attempts to shape the narrative concerning public health information through a process she terms “prebunking.” This involved pre-emptive communication with media outlets to nudge them in a particular direction regarding health reports, ostensibly to curb misinformation.
But herein lies the crux of the issue – who decides what constitutes misinformation?
A closer look at the CDC’s performance during the Covid-19 pandemic under Dr. Walensky’s stewardship reveals a troubling history of mixed messaging and reports that seemed influenced by political machinations. ‘Mysterious’ Brain Disorder Strikes Hundreds — And Cases Are Increasing
Across the Canadian province of New Brunswick, the number of people afflicted by a mysterious, potentially deadly brain ailment keeps growing. Neurological symptoms like hallucinations, muscle wasting, vision problems, memory loss and abnormal movements were seen in 2015 in a small cluster of patients, eventually growing to 48 cases.
But some health experts and local residents say the number of people with the condition is much higher — and may exceed 200. In addition, an unusual number of those cases are in young people, who do not typically show dementia-like symptoms or signs of other neurological problems.
“I am particularly concerned about the increase in numbers of young-onset and early-onset neurological syndrome,” neurologist Dr. Alier Marrero wrote in a Jan. 30, 2023, letter to New Brunswick’s chief medical officer and the chief federal public health officer...
The government agency Public Health New Brunswick declared in its February 2022 final report that there was, in fact, “no evidence of a cluster of neurological syndrome of unknown cause,” according to the podcast Canadaland.
“People who were part of this cluster displayed symptoms that varied significantly from case to case, and there was no evidence of a shared common illness or of a syndrome of unknown cause,” the report authors wrote, adding that the organization was “therefore concluding its investigation” into the matter.
But Marrero and patient advocates aren’t giving up, and many suspect the disorder may be linked to the use of pesticides in the primarily rural province.
Glyphosate — an herbicide used in agriculture, the forestry industry and household weedkillers — has come under particular focus.
In Marrero’s letter, he warned that recent laboratory tests on patients showed “clear signs of exposure” to glyphosate, as well as other compounds linked to herbicides, according to the Guardian.
Marrero also noted that the presence of glyphosate could be linked to blooms of blue-green algae in bodies of water.
Glyphosate contains phosphorous that can stimulate blooms of blue-green algae, a type of cyanobacteria that can sicken people and kill animals, including pets.
Advocates insist the true number of cases is at least 200, and some of the patients have tested positive for multiple environmental toxins, including glyphosate, at levels up to 40 times higher than the average limit, the Toronto Star reported.
Some patient advocates wonder if pressure from industry or other groups might be behind a political decision to close the case.

Canadian Medical Journal Offers Guidelines for Euthanasia/Organ-Harvesting Non-Terminally Ill Patients
A new Canadian Medical Association Journal article updates recommendations for doctors to apply when euthanizing and organ harvesting non-terminally ill patients. The article was published in the wake of Canadian law now allowing patients who are not dying to ask for euthanasia — called “Track 2” patients in the article. (Track 1 patients, those whose deaths are “reasonably foreseeable,” have even more relaxed policies than Track 2.)

Think about this. The need for a transplant by medically compatible loved one could become the motive for asking for euthanasia. This applies to the non–terminally ill Track 2 as well as Track 1 patients.
...Euthanasia dehumanizes people deemed killable under the law. Once accepted for death by medicalized homicide, the patient is diminshed — in at least some sense — to a natural resource ripe for the harvest.
Canadian medicine has become an ethics horror. Those with eyes to see, let them see.

New Research Shows That a Devastating New Virus Is One of the Worst Outbreaks in History: ‘[This Is] Uncharted Territory
COVID-19 isn’t the only virus that has significantly impacted the planet in the past few years. Avian flu (H5N1), which has devastated the poultry industry and caused a 70% increase in egg prices in the past year, has impacted more than just domesticated species.
What’s happening?
New research indicates that the flu, which has killed off hundreds of thousands of wild birds, is one of the most devastating disease outbreaks in history. Vox reported that the disease has spread across five continents and hundreds of species, including endangered ones like the California condor, which classifies it as a “panzootic” — a pandemic among animals.
Avian flu typically causes death only among domesticated birds, like ducks and chickens, killing up to 90% of the flock within an outbreak. But this time, it’s different.
“What we’re seeing right now is uncharted territory,” Andrew Ramey, a wildlife geneticist at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), told Vox. The biology of the virus has caused it to attack wild species and even mammals.
“It’s causing a high amount of mortality in a huge breadth of wild birds, which is not something that has been seen before,” commented Wendy Puryear, a molecular virologist at Tufts University. This is because the current avian flu virus has adapted to spread disease outside poultry farms and infect even more species in its wake.
The current avian flu outbreak, which emerged in North America in the winter of 2021, has killed or forced farmers to cull upward of half a billion birds worldwide. The number of wild birds affected by the outbreak is more difficult to track since governments lack the resources to test every dead bird. “We haven’t seen these kinds of numbers with an influenza outbreak in wild birds previously, ever,” Puryear said to Vox.
The avian flu is particularly problematic for biologists studying endangered and small bird populations, such as Michigan’s threatened Caspian terns and the California condor.

EU Secures Vaccine Deals With Pfizer, and Others for Future Pandemic
The European Commission has secured deals with Pfizer (PFE. N) and several European drugmakers to reserve capacity to make up to 325 million vaccines per year in case of a future global health emergency, it said on Friday.
The agreement, first reported by Reuters, covers mRNA, vector-based and protein-based vaccines and does not relate to existing COVID-19 vaccine agreements between the EU and vaccine makers including U.S. based Pfizer...
The deal ensures that companies are ready to respond to a crisis by keeping their facilities up to date and monitoring their supply chains, "including stockpiling where necessary", the Commission said in a statement.

Major Funders Back Pivotal Trial of Novel TB Vaccine
A large-scale efficacy trial of a promising tuberculosis (TB) vaccine will soon launch with $550 million in pledged funding from two major philanthropies, giving an enormous boost to a moribund field.
The placebo-controlled trial will begin early next year and will enroll 26,000 adults to test the vaccine, dubbed M72, at some 50 sites in Africa and Southeast Asia. The study will mostly enlist people who are free of TB symptoms but have latent infections with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which causes the respiratory disease. The trial will primarily assess whether M72 can prevent them from developing pulmonary TB—a form of the disease that can be deadly if untreated. A currently available TB vaccine developed more than a century ago offers adults little protection against this form of the illness.
The trial will also recruit 4000 uninfected participants to assess the vaccine’s safety in the general population and test whether it can prevent infection. Trevor Mundel, who heads the global health program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the trial’s funders, said at a press conference this morning that he expects the trial to take 4 to 6 years to complete
