I'd rather tend to suggest Lawnchair 12, Neo Launcher or even Hyperion for not being owned by a company. But apart from being acquired by Branch Metrics Nova is still pretty good and feature rich.

I've been promoting the ruthless launcher every chance I get, but it seems like when I do so I receive a comment that the application hasn't been updated in quite awhile at which point I don't have a valid response since I'm not a developer working on the development of the said application.

Not really a solution, but the reason for the crash is most probably that the dock icons minimum resolution is higher than what can be displayed at 20% dock size. The default setting of 0% is a bit misleading. As the default is actually 100% not reflected properly in the settings, you actually lower the dock size by choosing 20%. Try a higher value, e.g. 70-80% and see of it stops crashing and fits your needs.
