Marco Rubio calls for US to end Ukraine conflict
The US should make an effort to bring the Ukraine conflict to an end, because American assistance only succeeds in maintaining a stalemate, Republican Senator Marco Rubio has said.
In an interview with NBC News following Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election, Rubio, the vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, was asked to give his take on Trump’s pledge to end the hostilities between Moscow and Kiev.
The senator suggested that no one, including Trump, wants the Ukraine conflict to continue. “You don’t have to be a fan of [Russian President] Vladimir Putin to want the war to end.” However, “As a businessman, he [Trump] will not tell you about his negotiating tactic to bring it to a close,” he said.

South Africa shuts border with neighboring Mozambique
South Africa has closed one of its main border crossings with Mozambique in response to rising violence in the neighboring country following last month’s disputed presidential election.
The decision to shut the Lebombo port of entry is due to security reasons, the South African Border Management Authority said. The border is about 110km (68 miles) from Mozambique’s capital of Maputo, and about 440km from South Africa’s capital, Pretoria.
The Mozambican Center for Democracy and Human Rights claims that measures taken by the police to quell the protests against alleged electoral fraud have led to the deaths of at least two dozen people since the October 9 presidential vote.
