Baby bust: England-Wales birth rates plunge to lowest levels since records began
New government data released Monday shows that the total fertility rate (TFR) - the number of children born to a woman over her lifetime - plummeted to 1.44 in England and Wales last year, down from 1.49 in 2022 and 1.55 in 2021 to the lowest since records began in 1938.
Only 591,072 babies were born in 2023, the lowest number since 1977.
Office of National Statistics officials explained the sharpest rate of fertility decline was among women aged 20-29; even back in 1997, only one in five women had children before the age of 25, lower than any previous generation.
