Cuba battles to bring power back after blackouts

After over 48 hours of almost total nationwide power failure, two thermoelectric power stations were brought back online Saturday, with two more expected to be functional by Sunday.

The national power grid still only has 500 megawatts, compared to the usual 3 gigawatts. Officials have branded the current power crisis - driven by low fuel, poor maintenance of stations and high demand - the island’s worst in at least two years.

‘It’s been a complete onslaught and constant imaging of their own victimisation without any recognition of the genocide by Israelis against Palestinians, or the ongoing attacks in Lebanon, Syria and Yemen…this has been the ethos of the Zionist state, to dehumanise Palestinians and to elevate themselves so their pain and their victimisation is supreme, and nobody else can ever be a victim.’

Moldova polls open amidst transparency concerns

Voting has begun in the presidential elections and a referendum on enshrining EU membership ambitions in the Constitution, despite the Electoral Commission denying several European observers without explanation.

A number of Moldovan lawmakers have written to outside groups including the European Parliament complaining about the persecution of opposition figures and a number of media outlets.

Chisinau halved the number of polling stations in Russia - where there are 500,000 registered Moldovan voters, many of whom queued overnight in Moscow to vote - opening only two stations in Moscow at the embassy, and only printing 10,000 ballot papers.

Moldova to choose President and EU stance Sunday

Moldovans appear to be split on the referendum to enshrine ambitions to join the EU in the constitution on Sunday, with a survey last month suggesting 60% support the Yes vote, as they also choose their next leader.

Recent polls suggest that at least 30% of voters remain undecided, and that while incumbent President Maia Sandu is forecast to win, her lead is likely to fall short of the 50% needed to claim outright victory, meaning a run-off in November.

Ilan Shor’s anti-EU party was banned from running last year amidst allegations of Russian interference in the electoral process, which the Kremlin has vehemently denied.

Chinese drone maker sues Pentagon for ‘erroneous’ blacklisting

Chinese firm DJI claims it has been forced to file a lawsuit against the US Department of Defense, which ignored attempts to engage over a dispute that arose when it was placed on a Chinese military company blacklist.

The company insists it is not a military institution, citing the Pentagon itself admitting it accepts DJI manufactures drones for civilian and consumer purposes.

The Pentagon said back in 2022 that it had categorized DJI - the world’s largest producer of consumer drones - as a military institution over fears it was helping modernize Beijing’s Armed Forces.
