Genaro Garcia Luna, who led Mexico in fighting the violent drug trade, is set to be sentenced on Wednesday over his US criminal conviction for accepting bribes from the cartels. Court docs say he took millions of dollars in bribes from El Chapo who’s serving a life sentence in Colorado.

UK blacklists ‘extremist’ Israeli settler outposts
The UK has imposed sanctions on several Israeli settler outposts and organizations in the West Bank, calling on the Jewish state to crack down on violence against Palestinian residents.
Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law as they are seen as obstacles to the formation of an independent Palestinian state. However, many Jews choose to build communities there for religious reasons, and argue they are living on ancient Israeli land known as Judea and Samaria. The violent clashes between settlers and local Palestinians have been widely documented by human rights groups.
In a statement on Tuesday, the UK Foreign Office said that it has blacklisted three outposts, which have been supporting “extremists” settlers and are involved in “activity that amounts to a serious abuse of the right of Palestinians not to be subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”

Ukraine fatigue is ‘real’ – Finland foreign minister
Western countries are becoming tired of supporting Ukraine and are hoping for a resolution of the conflict, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen has told the Financial Times. Asked about “Western fatigue” with regard to supporting Ukraine, Valtonen replied: “It’s real, and increasingly so.”
According to the FT, Valtonen acknowledged that some attention and resources have been diverted from Ukraine to the conflict in the Middle East.
“These two conflicts are, of course, very much linked,” Valtonen told the FT, without elaborating. “For us Europeans it would be important to realize that if we allow Russia to win in Ukraine, then essentially we end the credibility of our deterrence,” she added.

Israeli strike on Lebanon kills entire family
An Israeli airstrike on northern Lebanon earlier this week killed 23 members of the same family, with six more people sustaining severe injuries, several media outlets have reported.
The attack hit a small apartment building in the village of Aito on Monday, located in a predominantly Christian region, away from the Hezbollah militant group’s main strongholds.
Later, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that 23 refugees from the south of the country had perished as a result of the Israeli strike on the village.

Veteran Czech politician Vaclav Klaus expects Ukraine and Russia to remain locked in armed conflict until the US chooses to stop the hostilities. He shared his grim view of the Ukraine conflict with the online media outlet XTV last week.
“The end of the war in Ukraine will come the moment when the falling hegemon of world politics says that the war must end,” he told host Lubos Xaver Vesely.. Klaus declined to make any predictions as to when this might happen, but said he expects Ukraine and Russia “to bleed for some more time.”
Klaus was the second president of the Czech Republic between 2003 and 2013, having previously served as prime minister and held a range of cabinet portfolios.

1.4 million volunteer for North Korean military amid tensions with South – media
North Korean media reported that 1.4 million young people applied to join the army, blaming South Korea for a drone incursion that heightened tensions. North Korea accused Seoul of scattering anti-North leaflets and responded by destroying inter-Korean roads and rail lines.
The youth, including students youth league officials, signed petitions pledging to fight in a "sacred war" against the South, the official KCNA news agency said. North Korea warned that if war breaks out, the southern Republic of Korea "will be wiped off the map." “As it wants a war, we are willing to put an end to its existence”.
According to some estimates, North Korea has 1.28 million active soldiers and about 600,000 reservists, with 5.7 million Red Guard reservists.
