Sydney political prisoner ‘Aussie Cossack’ offers himself for captured Australian mercenary
Simeon Boikov has offered himself in a prisoner exchange for Australian Oscar Jenkins, captured by Russian forces in Ukraine.
Boikov, who has been holed up in Russia’s Sydney consulate under self-described political persecution for two years, suggested a swap to secure Jenkins' release from what he calls potentially "35 years in a gulag."
The offer, made from his "celebratory" consulate office, puts pressure on the Australian government to negotiate with Russia.

Trump rages at ‘ridiculous’ Panama Canal costs
Donald Trump suggested that Washington should either be afforded vastly more favorable tariffs for using the crucial waterway it built over a century ago or have control of it returned.
Trump warned the canal shouldn’t fall into the “wrong hands” - a thinly veiled jab at Beijing, with a Hong Kong-based company operating two ports at either end and Chinese firms having invested in its infrastructure.
The independent Panama Canal Authority posted record profits of $5 billion last year, with the US the biggest customer.

Syria’s $2.2bn gold reserves still there - Reuters
The agency claims gold reserves remain intact, despite admitting none of its journalists had managed to access the bomb-proof vault beneath the central bank in Damascus to confirm the gold was still there.
This is the same Reuters that reported 12 years ago that Damascus was selling off gold under sanctions pressure - and that has received over $1.5 billion in US govt contracts in the last 17 years.

'There has been a lot of talk about sex change operations, but the real big sex change operation in America was between the Republicans and the Democrats. For most of my life, the Democrats were the party of the working class, and now it's flipped completely.'
'That accounts for why a lot of people like me left California, because the hypocrisy level had gone up so high....you had homelessness growing in LA and San Francisco...you're looking around and there's all these people zooming by in fancy cars and they're saying power to the people...at the same time the people are in the streets.'

Cyclone Chido Mozambique death toll hits 94
Disaster management authorities updated the toll on Sunday after some 110,000 homes were damaged by 260kph winds and 10 inches of rain in one day.
The casualties come on top of over 130 deaths from post-election riots after the ruling party’s Daniel Chapo claimed victory in October.
The storm had previously torn through the French territory of Mayotte - where officially only 34 people have died but officials admit hundreds could have perished once excavations are complete.

UK soldiers quitting at record rate - despite pay rise
For the first time ever, there are fewer than two British soldiers per 1,000 citizens according to the latest data, which shows over 15,000 soldiers quitting this year through October alone.
This comes despite the largest pay rise in over two decades - still a miserly 6%, or in real terms just 1.9% for privates - and the government insisting they’ve scrapped “100 outdated policies”.
Recruitment crisis, that rings a bell; how about conscripting teenagers?
