CNN: The war in Ukraine has offered the U.S. and its allies a rare opportunity to study how their own weapons systems perform.
For the US military, the war in Ukraine has been an incredible source of data on the utility of its own systems.
Ukraine is "absolutely a weapons lab in every sense because none of this equipment has ever actually been used in a war between two industrially developed nations," said one source familiar with Western intelligence. "This is real-world battle testing."

Ukrainian soldier tells CNN that they are pointlessly being sent to die in Soledar.
A Ukrainian soldier fighting in the eastern town of Soledar told CNN that the situation is “critical” and the death toll is now so high that “no one counts the dead”.
The soldier said that he believed Ukraine’s military leaders would eventually abandon the fight for Soledar and questioned why they hadn’t done this yet. “Everyone understands that the city will be abandoned. Everyone understands this,” he said. “I just want to understand what the point [in fighting house to house] is. Why die, if we are going to leave it anyway today or tomorrow?”

In a surprise reshuffle, Gen. Surovikin is replaced by Gen. Gerasimov as the top commander of the operation in Ukraine.
Valery Gerasimov, 67, has been serving as the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces since 2012. His appointment to the helm of the Ukraine operation appears to indicate that it is now the single and most important priority of the entire Russian military apparatus.
Sergey Surovikin, commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces, took charge of the campaign in Ukraine in October 2022. Following the reshuffle, he will serve as one of Gerasimov’s deputy commanders.

New York Times releases findings of a months-long investigation that appears to show evidence pinning a specific Russian regiment and its commander to the killings of civilians in Bucha, Ukraine.
Russian authorities have thus far denied even the possibility that its soldiers could bare any responsibility for the massacre and instead claimed that Ukraine faked the footage of the bodies or staged the killings itself as a false flag operation.

WNBA star Brittney Griner and arms dealer Viktor Bout freed in second U.S.-Russia prisoner swap this year.
Griner pled guilty to drug smuggling charges and was sentenced to nine years in prison after vape cartridges containing cannabis oil were found in her luggage at a Moscow airport in February 2022.
Bout was arrested in 2008 and later convicted and sentenced to a 25-year jail term for conspiring to kill U.S. nationals and provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
The Griner-Bout swap follows a similar exchange in April that secured the release of former U.S. marine Trevor Reed and Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko.
