#OTD in 2008, the five-day-war between Russia and Georgia began after Georgian forces launched an attack on Tskhinvali, South Ossetia. According to the report of the European Union's Independent Fact-Finding Mission, Georgia's use of force in South Ossetia violated international law.
The report further stated that the initial response by Russia was justified, but that the later advance of Russia's armed forces into Georgia was disproportionate and went beyond the the legal limits of their peace-keeping mandate. The war ended on August 12 and Russian forces withdrew in the weeks that followed.
