Thanks for the advice, yeah I’m definitely not buying anything unless I’m 100% sure it’s completely safe, FWIW the ones I’ve used for years and recommend highly are https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074L82WFD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share , I’m quite happy with them but was just curious to take another look at the market to see if a good consensus on some good recommended automated ones had been reached (compared to the last time I looked like, a decade ago)

IIRC there was a rather slick manual cleaning design box i found once that had a double shell and a strainer tray where cleaning it you just picked up the top part and dumped it into the bottom part then shook and removed the strainer tray, dumped it, then put it back together in the other order. It also made it so you used a different shell each time you cleaned so you didn't have to empty it to give the shell a thorough cleaning.

(that’s the Omega Paw litter box which mimics the rotational grate design of some of the automated ones, except you rotate it yourself, so it has none of the danger of the cheap automated ones, really clever design, I like it a lot)

Ultimately I ended up just using both shells as separate cat boxes though because the whole disassembly process required too much floor space in the tiny closet i kept the box

This is also probably true. More complicated just means harder to clean even if it saves you time daily you lose time monthly etc

honestly it's just not worth the risk. if you actually care about your cat you're just better off scooping manually. even beyond that, it takes like 15 min to do a VERY thorough job daily. if you can't allocate 15 min of your day to taking care of your pet, you probably have bigger issues than just scoopin the poopins 👀

The one that rotates around the entrance axis like a cement mixer barrel iirc looked pretty nice but do your own additional research before pulling the trigger

I can tell you what features they should NOT have... any where the entrance slides closed can hurt your cat. Any where the shell is also one piece that won't come apart if it closes on something can kill your cat
