You seem clueless as to how trademarks work. You HAVE to try and enforce them. If you do not try to enforce it when you are aware of a conflict, you can rapidly lose the ability to enforce it.
The record company had an agreement that the computer company would not 'conflict' with it in media. Then the iPod happened, and the iPod music store, and that's when the lawsuit started. According to the grapevine, Jobs was distraught that his musical heros were suing his company, and wanted some sort of 'compromise' or 'win-win'. The computer company ended up buying the trademark and giving the limited rights back to the record company. The record company obviously seemed OK wiith this, because Apple released a 'Beatles edition' iPod with all of the Beatles music on it, shortly after.

You did hear how that ended?? After a few years, Apple Comp paid the Apple Records a LOT of money, they BOUGHT the rights to use the Apple name for music stuff, then Apple Comp gave the record company the rights to use the name again for records and media in perpetuity.
