I mean it's more of a habit picked up through years of trips/driving in/around/to/from LA where if you use your blinker you'll lose your spot and get smashed into from behind lmao, but it's the kind of thing I kept up around here because it can genuinely save you like 5 min on a 30 min trip just to slip into the slipstream where you can and not worry about the "I would like to go here please" light

Yeah, not at all my experience on 101. Yes SOME folks rush up to block you but mostly i have folks make room for me and let me change lanes. I also always make room for someone using their signals. Obviously ymmv.
